- No fewer than 31,598 fallen German soldiers are buried at the Ysselsteyn cemetery.
Of those, 31,598 burried soldiers, there is one in particular.
This is Karl-Heinz Rosch, a young boy who was drafted at the age of 17 to serve in the German army. And then gave his life for that of Jan (4) and Toos (5). Two young children from Goirle. (North Brabant, Netherlands)

There is also the story of Otto Schimeck a young viennese boy who was shot in Poland ate the age of 19 , because he had refused to shoot Polish families . This story also touched me a lot and made me sad that such a young man had to die out of charity

I frequently stop at this cemetery when I am travelling to Germany through the Netherlands. I am constantly reflecting on the individual lives of those laying here and in other military cemeteries (both sides). This was a wonderful tale and thank you for sharing.

I visited this military cemetery 4 years ago and found it such an awe-inspiring and reflective place. As others have mentioned, I found myself trying to visualise the very young men (boys) who sadly lost their lives to the madness of national socialism. It was heartening to hear Karl's story and his daring kindness towards the children and their parents. I am sure that there are many others of a similar disposition who lie with Karl in this beautiful park. As a retired Army officer who has served in Germany and who has spent many wonderful holidays in the Netherlands, I have always been touched by the generosity of spirit and kindness shown to the memory of those who liberated the country. It is equally gratifying to see that same generosity of spirit being acknowledged towards those who do good things in bad times. Thank you for a wonderful story told so well.
I am German and born in 1965. What Germans have done in the past is not my fault but I feel bad about it. All the stories like this makes me glad, glad that some Germans haven't lost their hearts in the war. I am shure there are more of it but nobody knows. So thanks for telling us about that hero.

Thanks for bringing this historical event to us, you are paying tribute to Karl Heinz Rosch and many more innocent people who were sent to the wrong place and the wrong time. My family was involved in this situation during WW I and II. Greetings from Mexico City.
In September 1992, I visited Ysselsteyn with my father and his friend. As I recall, there were high hedges around the entry so it was not visible from the car park. A lane way takes you to the cemetery proper but it is obscured by the hedges until the last moment. At the instant my eyes saw the extent of this place I physically felt the air drain from my lungs almost a feeling of faintness. My father did not venture onto the grounds nor did his friend. They sat on a bench and I guess discussed old times. We were there for only 20 minutes when my father summoned me that it was time to move on. The truth is he felt uncomfortable there. As we walked back to the car I asked why he felt no emotions for these young men. His answer was was sharp and tinged with anger. They never should have been here in the first place, he said. Near five years of occupation will make a person feel that way. He hated them in a way that no one, unless they experienced it, could have any chance of understanding. At the Allied cemeteries he could hardly hold back his tears.
What sort of trips me up, is that the German leadership saw your people as racial equals, yet your folk for the most part hated them.
I've read of instances of German troops who were integrated into your army, having "accidents" and your people putting yellow stars on their clothes, much to the annoyance of the occupiers.

Ik herinner me een verhaal over een Duitse soldaat in de buurt van Gent die ook ingekwartierd was, zeer tegen de zin van de familie ter plekke. Maar de soldaat stak de familie geregeld wat extra eten en rantsoen toe dat hij uit de kazerne had meegenomen. Na de oorlog heeft hij de familie per brief zelfs nog bedankt voor hun goede zorgen. Een andere Duitser (die al enige tijd in Gent woonde) heeft zelfs een plaatselijke commandant ervan overtuigd een arrestatie van tien onschuldige burgers niet uit te voeren. En zo zijn er nog wel verhalen

Het is moejlijk tw begrijpen. Ik ben een keer an de grens in Monschau in Duitsland geweest en daar vindt je ook een monument voor de gevallene zonen uit de stad en nur enkele kilometer naar de west vindt je de monumenten voor de gevallene zonen aan de andere kant, jongs van 18 of 20 jaren met de zelfden interessen voor fietsen en meisjes. Het is heel tragisch. Groetjes van een duitser.

@@TravelingToHistory Monschau is heel mooi en de landschaap van fe Hoghe Venn ook. Helaas, weet ik niet meer de naam van de dorp aan de belgische kant waar ik heb de monument gezien maar ik denk dat vele de monumenten en de vriedhofjes hebben. Het was in historieke grens in de twee oorlogs en daarvoor. Interessant ook de historieke grensstijnen te zoeken.

Thanks for uploading this heart-warming story. How many wonderful young men .....including Germans......had their lives cut short by the insanity of that war?! I hope the name Karl Heinz sticks with me as i try to honor the memory of so many who lived by good values even if they were caught up on the wrong side.

The fact that even a memorial to a hero of the highest humanitarian courage had to be feared, moved, and basically hidden because of all the naysayers and their rumor mongering speaks volumes as to who the real good guys were
Perhaps they shouldn't have been there, but for the ordinary man there was probably not much choice. It is desperately sad to see his grave marker, and that of his friend- two lads killed at the age of 18. My own parents were around the same age, both served in the British services during the war, both survived to have long, productive and pretty happy lives. Brings it home for me.

A touching video….The propaganda about German Soldiers is just that, propaganda….I knew a few WW2 British infantry soldiers who had nothing but praise and respect for their counterparts in the Wehrmacht.. The word NAZI which is an overused term for all Germans of that era was first coined by a Jewish chap call Konrad Heiden, its been turned into something really despicable by pure propaganda. The National Socialists never referred to themselves as NAZI’s… RIP Karl Heinz one of the many victims from WW2.

kreeg ik wel even kippenvel, ongelofelijk dat daar zo'n 31000 soldaten begraven zijn, laten we hopen dat zoiets nooit meer gebeurd.

Dienstplicht einde dromen en goals...oorlogen voeren triestig verhaal..mensen onderlingen liefde was er altijd, maar door haat en nijd veranderd de tijd..
Mooi verhaal, herkenbaar: mijn grootouders vertelden ook dat de duitse soldaten overwegen goeie jongens waren, die zich goed gedroegen.
1) hoe komt het toch dat de meeste comments Engels zijn? Als ik subtitels aanklik, krijg ik nederlandse ondertiteling.
2) Jammer dat je niet vertelde wat er met die kinderen gebeurd was. Mischien leven ze nog wel, dat had je ze mooi fff in beeld kunnen brengen.
3) Ook jammer dat je niet fff de vogelpoep van KH's helm hebt gepoetst, voor het filmen..

Very sad story this man was truly a hero. It's sad that old men start wars. That young man have to die in. Maybe if we send politicians to war there wouldn't be and not soldiers and sailors and Marines. Maybe they would think twice before they decide to declare senseless wars.
Sad that good people often get swept up in world insanity, and have to pay the ultimate price!

@@TravelingToHistory Mijn ouders hebben ook behoorlijk geleden door de oorlog. Vader vocht aan Nederlandse kant en heeft als krijgsgevangene heel wat mede soldaten moeten begraven bij de Grebbeberg. Zijn broer werd afgevoerd tijdens een razzia naar de Arbeitseinzatz en heeft geen goede tijd gehad. De volgende broer werd naar Indië gestuurd en nu weten we allemaal wat daar gebeurd is, ik heb hem daarover nooit iets horen zeggen. Aan moeders kant werd haar broer getraumatiseerd omdat hij tijdens hevige vuurgevechten, gewonde en dode soldaten uit de vuurlinie moest slepen. Hun huis werd afgebrand en ze raakten alles kwijt. Familie in Nijmegen en Arnhem zijn gebombardeerd en verdreven. En ondanks dit alles... de een meer dan de ander, hebben ze toch hun haat kunnen overwinnen en zijn ze de menselijkheid in de ander blijven zien. Blij dat ze de ellendige tijd achter zich konden laten.
In het besef dat maar heel weinige dit gewild hebben en bijna iedereen slachtoffer was van die tijd.
Dat is heel veel binnen een familie indd. En zeer mooi om te zien dat het gros toch de haat hebben kunnen omzetten in iets anders. Bedankt voor het delen van het verhaal. En bedankt voor het kijken

1 van die jongens naam was willie en was koerier.
en had toen mijn opa in het ziekenhuis lag mijn zwangere oma [ van mijn moeder ] in zijn zijspan mogen laden en haar afgezet in het ziekenhuis 45 km verder en na enkele uren haar weer opgehaald en terug naar huis gebracht.
in die tijd in de zeeuwse polder was 45km met paard en wagen een hele dag reizen.
ook is zeker dat er minimaal 1 is gesneuveld en dat er van 1 zijn hele familie is verbrand tijdens een 'vuurstorm'' bombardement , waarschijnlijk hamburg.
