My New Flat Bottom, Alcantara E55 AMG Steering Wheel!

- Mercedes-Benz didn't exactly go crazy with steering wheels in the older AMG cars. For the most part, they were off the shelf steering wheels from base models cars and they really don't belong any near a performance car. In this video I replace the steering wheel in my 2003 E55 AMG with a much nicer flat bottom, Alcantara wrapped, aluminum paddle shifter equipped steering wheel. This wheel looks absolutely perfect and is what Mercedes should have used back in the day.

You should get the E63 shifter as well, it has alcantara on the front that will match well with the alcantara on the steering wheel
Kelvin, That's what I thought - some other detail wrapped in alcantara to tie in with the steering wheel. The shifter is a great idea.

Replace the shift knob - with fresh unmolested black leather. And brand new fresh black AMG floor mats and finally degrease the seats 💺 so they don’t look so shiny. Bam 💥 - lookin’ like a million bucks! Or 90k - whichever is clever 😉

I absolutely love the steering wheel....I don't think it looks tacky at all, it looks like it's really well made with nice materials. I agree, it was smart to NOT go with carbon on it. I think once you get the rest of the interior a bit of an update, it will look even better. Perhaps that's why some don't love it as much, because it's so upgraded compared to the rest of the interior which stock is a bit out of date. Some minor tweaks and it will match perfectly, and really bring everything together. Get the new head unit, can't go wrong with a big touchscreen, new shift knob, and some new trim pieces or something along those lines. Wood grain actually Is a nice change, but that silver around the shifter looks cheap....
For the record I love what you've done with the E55 so far, and it brings me closer and closer to actually getting one (or an E63 or another AMG in that range). Keep up the great work and more vids!
Looks amazing. At first I thought it may b ever the top but after a while it does look super sweet. I put an M3 steering wheel on my 335D and it made a huge difference.

Noticed you asked about opinions. I love the wood grain a lot! But I'd say all the gray/silver pieces need to go black, not cf. Mainly at the shifter. Dope video though man.

The car looks amazing after the paint correction and the ceramic coating. The steering wheel matches the interior very well.
Those wood trims would look superb wrapped in alcantara to match the wheel! Easy to do too. Much classier than fake carbon wrap. But I know what you mean about liking the wood trim in that shade. I have the same but darker in my old E46 BMW wagon. I swapped it all out for alu silver but then swapped it back! The subdued dark colours are much cooler.

I advocate these shop manuals as I downloaded 1 for my S600 which is hell 2 find parts for!

I'd just like to ask, since you had the steering wheel off, are the multifunction buttons on the airbag replaceable? So basically if I just buy the buttons can I put them on my existing airbag?
Chris is the man! Spent way too much money at his shop this last year but everything i've been super happy with!
Also like your steering wheel as well, with maybe the exception of the contouring around palm rest area. That I think looks a little too aggressive for a Mercedes, maybe it's just me getting old...

It's amazing that you have shared the mercedes repair manual. I do believe you are the only guy on TH-cam who has cared enough to share this. I had to buy a DVD manual off Ebay after looking high and low for weeks.
Anytime Bob. It took me a while to find something worth sharing. I have tried so many manuals and they all leave a ton of info out. This is just like factory.
I don't know if you could get away with it on youtube but a great intro to this video would be a sample of fat bottomed girls (flat bottomed wheels) by Queen would have been neato.

Nice upgrade, but Alcantara usually doesn't age well. Great job not getting carbon fiber and opting for a nice look close to stock.
Agreed, it's a beautiful wheel, but having driven a few older cars with alcantara wheels, they get really gross really fast, sucking up all the skin oils and such off your hands. If you don't mind spending a lot of time and effort regularly cleaning it's probably not so bad, but lets be realistic, most people don't bother because cleaning alcantara properly is fiddly and time consuming.

Looks amazing! Unfortunately my palms are too sweaty for the alcantara since it would match my headliner. I did go with a wheel with the same contours as yours but with matching wood on the top and bottom sections. Super nice upgrade 👍🏻

That wheel is perfect. The leather looks OEM and the carbon fiber wheel would’ve looked like an obvious bolt-on. Not that a bolt-on look is bad but I like the understated classy look like yourself.

Love these videos Alex. I don't mind the original OEM Steering Wheel, but the Flat Bottom one looks amazing, and the larger paddle shifters would be a big plus. Have you thought about upgrading the Entertainment Head Unit? It is on my short list of potential upgrades for my E55.

The new steering wheel you selected looks awesome. I agree that is a more classy look that should have been installed that way from MB. I have a 2013 VW CC Lux and I plan to purchase a similar steering for my vehicle. ohh, and I'll mention your channel for my 5% off. lol
