The ringer switch is definitely broken on the Mutron. It should add a large amount of fuzz/upper octave, extremely noticeable. If it's just the switch that's broken, replace it!!! You are missing out on a whole realm of sound without it. Keep in mind, the ringer will bypass the tone/mix controls when activated.
I love the OC-2. It can be modded with a LPF. I put the filter pot in place of the oct2 pot. Its tracking can be improved by recapping it, but it still won't track well if you have scrappy technique. My other favourite vintage octaver is the Korg OCT-1 / Yamaha OC-01. (Same pedal). It has a really throaty tone and tracks very well. The yamaha version is getting collectable, but doesn't have a standard DC jack unfortunately.
Great job reviewing these pedals and explaining them. My number 1 octave pedal is Octron 3 from FoxRox. The octave below doesn't color my Fender Jazz tone very much. Sounds more like I'm in sync with another player using my bass, just one octave down. The octave above has a natural distortion and I prefer to use that setting for distortion whenever I can.
I have the Boss Oc-3 and I've learned to really appreciate how versatile it is. It can do Polyphonic, it can do the OC-2 sounds, and the overdrive + octave mode works great too!
I went on my own journey for the perfect octave pedal, and at arrived at The MXR Bass oct Deluxe. I didn't think i'd like any of these but wow that Ampeg sounds great!!
I was impressed by how the oc2 sounds so different from the others. In a Synth way, OC2 rules, but in a octaver way, mutron and the ampeg was by far that sounded better
I own 2 Ampeg Sub Blasters(re-issue versions) and for me,it's The Pedal. The sound and feel is like "Jimi Hendrix in a Box",as soon as it's in your signalchain, you don't want to delete it anymore. Allthough quite expensive (when offered) on Ebay/Reverb (€400-600),exclusive shipping and import taxes.
The envelope on OC-2 is just as bass-synth would be configured. Thusly, most applicable when feeding a fuzz. My preference for clean octaves is octamizer, mxr bod and OC-3/5.
I have a vintage (Japanese) OC-2 and a modern Octave Divider clone (not the Behringer, although thát one is pretty amazing!!), and they are hugely different. The Boss gets me a great synthy sound - I normally play a bit higher up the neck to prevent mud, and it works really well with my fretless too! My "Mutron"-clone is very useful on bass (especially if the ringer switch works, yours clearly doesn't...) but to me it works best on guitar. Actually that's where I first heard it: Wolf Hoffmann from the German metal-legends Accept used it on one of their earliest records, and thát was absolutely mind-blowing.... So I had to have one as well 😎👍🇩🇪🤣
listening on tascam headphones....disagree some with your preferences, of course...electro-harmonix is not bad, it's somewhere between the mu-tron and the meat but with its own kind of grain in how it distorts. But I agree about the OC-1. .. most intrigued by the POG v1
Arion MOC-1 that's my old octave pedal. Oh and the Octaver in my old Ashdown Electric Blue combo, that''s a softer more subtle effect. Nearly forgot - the Boss SE-70 half rack multi has a nice Octaver in it too. Well I guess it would have to wouldn't it, being a Boss ... 🙄 I'm very interested in the OC-5 now though.
hi mate! With headphones and looking for the john Davis "Nerve" sound i found the OCt1 of oc-2 much better. I'm happy i choose the oc2 octaver. The best for that specific sound "Nerve" sound.
I loved the Ampeg the most followed by the Mutron. Loved the sound of the Electon Harmonix but if it doesn’t track well I guess it’s a studio tool only. Hated the sound of the Boss.
Yup that Ampeg sounds very nice, i didn't even know it existed, as with a couple of the others. The Boss one sounded worse than i remember, a bit over-rated i reckon. I use the Bass Deluxe myself.
I absolutely loved that Ampeg octaver, I really can see... err, hear why it's your favorite! Please do a modern octaver video and include the MXR Bass Octaver Deluxe. I have been looking to add an octaver to my pedal board and so far that MXR is the front runner.
I’ve found octavers great for exploring the upper register of the bass while still having a nice fat sound, they encourage you to play more clean than you might otherwise, so they can track the note properly. People use analog octave pedals to get a synth sound. You might use one in place of a low B or detuning to get lower notes (although that doesn’t work as well as a lower or detuned string). Great for simply filling out more space.
Popularity doesn't mean good. To me the Boss sounds like @$$. Ampeg & Electro harmonics are very nice & I imagine they will work well in a studio mix or live band setting
I agree that on this vid they are the ones who sound the most like an actual, super low bass guitar. The EHX really doesn't track the low E string very well, but it's nothing dramatic if you're used to it.

PS; Meat is the octave, Rump is lows, Flank is mids, Lbs is the volume. :) Thanks for a great channel mate....

it would be nice to hear the comparison with octabvre from 3 leaf audio too
@@filipeantunesbarros760 that and an Aggie Octamizer. Sounds like OC-2 was powered the wrong way (undervolted).
It was powered correctly with 12V, Gregor said earlier.
You can hear why the Mutron would be useful for double tracking when recording, hadn't come across the Ampeg before, sounds good, thank you Gregor 😎

Gregor we need that new epsiode of modern octavers!! Good job on this one btw
NICE to see you playing !!!
07:01 That's why the Berhinger is on my board, nasty sounding !!!
OC-2 with velcro like fuzz IS my synth sound. Dry at about 25%, Octave 1 at 100%. Octave 2 at 0%
Wow, we asked for an octave video and you made it. You're a legend
The ampeg... awsome!
I like the Ampeg pedal, and. Gregor's socks.
Great demo. Thanks ! I have a request for you to do a demo of high/low bypass filters please ! Love your channel
Those are utility items. Not sure what to demo there to be honest

Are the conga/percussions in the intro from a sample pack?
That DoD pedal is something else. WoW.
The Ampeg sounds the best but I love the DOD.

That Meatbox - octave only - was the first time my studio speakers actually made the room vibrate. Mmmm...
Have to say I've tried quite a few of these, but the OC 2 is still in my pedalboard.
After trying various different octavers, I’m in love still with my OC-2. But it kinda needs flatwounds, weirdly enough.
DOD is fun ! Crazy 😄
NEVER ENOUGH OCTAVERS!!!
I expected to hear the clear supremacy of the OC2, but found the one I like the most was the Mutron

My Kef reference woofers didnt like that Meat Box! They were trying to leave the building! :)
One of each please!
What Xotic pedal was mentioned towards end?

That sub-blaster…
Did you run the OC2 at 9v or 12v? it'll give you more hear room..
Can you go to 12V without modification? I thought digital pedals don't like that...
@@franzludwig3250 The old boss stuff needs 12v.. I'm no expert on why.. and that an analog pedal, I think..

I.m.e. MXR is good for clean rock (synthy)sounds. OC2 for dub/dnb and driving a fuzz. MXR is too dirty for feeding into fuzz.
I was waiting to hear how the tracking is with highest notes of the bass
A video I didn't know I needed.
Thinking of buying the Boss OC-5 BTW.
*edit:* The EHX POG v1 is missing from the final comparisons for some reason?
It’s too different and not do great in the lower octave, that’s why I left it out
@@basstheworldofficial I see, thank you!
@@jasondoe2596 OC-5 is great for clean sounds. Not so much for John Davies-style synth.

Can we get a full episode of Gregor sucks at bass about the socks?
New to the pedal world, what is the typical application/genre for octave bass?
I don't think there is a specific genre for using octaver it's just for fun playing and jamming and it's an essential pedal in any way
