    I finally caught up with the reading. I am a senior and was raised Baptist. The stories I'm reading were quite watered down in Sunday School. These people are horrible. It's good that God is merciful and forgiving when we give ourselves to him. I listen to you Pastor Cary before I read the scripture for the week to help me understand what I am reading. Then I listen to you again after completing the reading. It helps to cement it into my brain. I'm really enjoying this journey.

    I was taken aback when you said that every time you read the story about Joseph that you cry. That is exactly what happened to me this past week. I have read this passage of scripture many times in my 70 years, but this time without warning I was consumed with the character of Joseph and wept uncontrollably. How he must have felt after all his brothers did to him, he still loved them so much. Kind of what Jesus feels for us even after all the sin we have in us. I feel so unworthy of His magnificent and unrelenting love. Reminds me of Romans 5:8

    "But God" is so vital in the story of Joseph. Joseph's brothers determined to harm Joseph, but God intended it to save a remnant. I always loved this story, and I am in awe of the love and Mercy God shows to Israel and to all who love Him. This is a beautiful story and I see the connection between Joseph and Jesus.

    I really love these. Joseph is probably one of my favorite stories in the Bible. I just hate the story of Judah and the prostitute, you’re right it’s awful. I wish you didn’t feel rushed Pastor. I wish you would give a whole hour to these there’s so much to go over. Thank you for doing them. Vickie from New York

    I love this story on Joseph and was heartbroken when I read he was sold into slavery and grew up in Egypt then became high rank ruler for Pharaoh. Fascinating story of reconciliation! I do have a couple of questions. What exactly is typology? I’m still not clear on the meaning and secondly, why did Esau (Edomites and Amalek ) go to war against Israel if Esau and Jacob reconciled? Perhaps, was it before they became brothers again? I notice many pastors don’t cover Esau very much at all and the fact on how wicked Esau really was. I wonder why? Esau had 3 wives and one being a Persian woman that Esau bore children with. Then a grandson being Amalek. Famously known Arabs and Palestinians. Will you be covering more Esau? I look forward to tomorrow NT study and Revelations later today. Cheers Pastor Cary!

      Typology is how figures, events, or details of the Old Testament represent or point to Jesus in some way. The best typology is that which relies on the New Testament to validate the type… like when Jesus gave the last supper and said “this is me.”
      The most questionable typology is when we try to imagine mystical representations that have no real basis in scriptures.
      Esau rebelled and fathered a nation of people who fought Israel… there’s plenty to say but the Bible doesn’t really say a whole lot. We will come to Esau again briefly in Romans and Hebrews.

    To me the theme that goes unnoticed is the garden/ kingdom theme. The reason we were created in the first place was to care for the earth and the center of this was the garden Genesis1:26-28, Genesis 2:5-8. We have to see redemption as only a means to an end not the end. Jesus came to restore the kingdom Matthew 4:17,23. We see the story completed in Revelation 21.

    Could you explain the significance of Jacob switching his right hand to josephs younger son please Thank you for this I did exactly what you said and kept on reading i was to exodus 4 before i even realized how far i had read

    • @pastorcaryschmidt
      @pastorcaryschmidt  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      The right hand of blessing symbolizes strength and favor, and was generally, traditionally given to the older son. There was a practical reason for this in the after the father's death, the oldest usually had the responsibility of leading and caring for the family. In this case, it meant that Jacob intended to give a greater blessing to the younger brother. We don't know all the reasons why, but it was the case with Abraham and Isaac, Isaac, and Jacob, and now Jacob blessed Joseph's sons, giving the greater blessing (and inheritance) to the younger.

    Quick question… Why do some people put Job after Genesis 11 and some don’t?
    I’m sort of following 2 different plans and I noticed the other one does but this one doesn’t. And my Chronological Bible doesn’t.

    • @pastorcaryschmidt
      @pastorcaryschmidt  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      All Chronological plans that I’m familiar with place Job right after Genesis 11. The dating of Job is general based upon names, locations, cultural customs, and other such clues… they all point to around or before the time of Abraham… 2,000 BC or earlier.

    I still struggle with Jacob’s wrestling with The Lord all night. It seems to say that Jacob won the “fight”, which I tend to believe represented a “spiritual fight” more than a physical one and I can’t understand how Jacob could actually “demand” a blessing. I can’t relate to “demanding” anything from Jesus, rather, I ask for blessings. What am I missing?🙏🫶

    • @pastorcaryschmidt
      @pastorcaryschmidt  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +10

      Very good question. I believe you are bringing "tone and motive" to the text that doesn't accurately represent the story. Hebrew to English often sounds forceful (when literally translated) but there's a lot of heart and tenderness in this story.
      This is the defining moment of Jacob's life, especially with God. He has, in some way, been wrestling God and resisting God and manipulating/plotting his own way through life for a long time. All the while God has already determined to bless Jacob-God's way, not Jacob's way. In this wrestling match, Jacob finally realizes it is the Lord that is wrestling with him. This is strategic because he knows that God could have overpowered him at any time! This is God's grace letting Jacob wrestle. Finally, realizing the gracious heart of God, Jacob gives in. His desire for God's blessing is more of a surrender than it is a demand. He finally yields to God and to God's blessing. Too often we resist God's true blessing in pursuit of smaller blessings that we are trying to manipulate God to give us. God's desire to bless us is always bigger than we realize, but it is often a long wrestling match before we give in to Him and finally accept HIS WAY of blessing us. In that, God is pleased and we are always surprised that His blessing was better than we imagined.
      I hope this helps!
