Even though Tony was a sociopathic criminal and murderer, somehow he still had a certain level of integrity and empathy towards other humans. Tony was a fair leader. I guess this is why the audience still can relate and empathize with him. Remember, Junior Soprano chose Tony in favor of Richie, so did the other members of the family.

There are many examples where Tony surprises the audience by behaving differently than what the audience expect of him, making them sort of like an unlikable character.

Interesting how he was trying to get therapy to help him just keep it contained, he never wanted to really get rid of his rage because he called on it to generate fear in others and fuel his situational command presence. Trouble was it was consuming him a little at a time with every outburst.

She knew exactly what the game was, and to play her position as a mafia wife, but the bitch would lose perspective ever so often. Fortunately, Tony would put her back in perspective and humble her.

I loved that cross between a pat and slap at Arty Bucco's face. Couldn't stop laughing, you can see him get from drunk to sober in a second. Incredible acting by both of them.
I hated the AJ character and he should have been totally different. I really could have done without AJ or Meadow and couldn’t care less about their story and lives.

Bobby Bacala's fight with Tony is a well done scene. Even though they are roughly the same size, it still feels like a David and Goliath fight.

Tony was a master at giving people the Johnson Treatment™, named after Lyndon B. Johnson, who was notorious for intimidating people by invading their private space with his huge frame and leaning in real close. There's a lot of photos of Johnson giving people this treatment.
I loved that cross between a pat and slap at Arty Bucco's face. Couldn't stop laughing, you can see him get from drunk to sober in a second. Incredible acting by both of them.
AJ was the worst character in history. He would make any father wish they used a condom.

@@robertpreston2220 no completely disagree, the smart one in that family was Meadow, she knew her dad was mobbed up the rest of them (Carmella,AJ) were both in denial until Meadow proved to AJ that his dad was nothing but a low-life gangster.
What made The Sopranos the best show so far is the deep Character Development. We see so much internal and external opposition.

Look, Gandolfini's acting is clearly amazing. Watching Tony Soprano felt like watching a real person. Every intimidation scene... It's art. But when those scenes occurred with Janice, against Meadow, and especially with his mom while they were pushing her... Goosebumps. Best acting in a show I've ever seen.
