  • Seven for the dwarves in their halls of stone. Today, we cover the seven dwarven rings of power, from their creation in Eregion, to falling into Sauron's hands, to ultimately being given to the dwarves. From there, they would be at the foundation of legendary treasure hoards of the dwarves, before falling - one by one - to either dragons or Sauron himself.

      Sauron probably gave the three remaining of the Seven to humans under his power (likely including the Mouth of Sauron) so as to mint three more Nazgûl--only he didn't have time to complete the process.

      There are Dwarves in the Silmarillion, but they do not acquit themselves honorably. They fall to the curse of the Silmarillion as well as other curses laid by Morgoth.
      The Riders of Rohan once had a hero-king when living in the north near Mirkwood, who slew a dragon called Scatha the Worm. The dwarves likely murdered him when he would not give up the treasure.

      Honestly, I don't see Celebrimbor allowing the Gwaith-i-Mirdain to create rings more intricate and beautiful than The Three Elven Rings. The Dwarves would have made their own rings more beautiful than the Elven rings, maybe in memory of the Nauglamir.🤔

    • @therealelderking5830

      @@therealelderking5830
      Yes, exactly. I am pretty sure Annatar's designs for the 16 Rings of Power didn't have esthetic beauty like Celebrimbor's rings had. Sauron was only interested in creating Rings of "Power" not beauty. I think Celebrimbor probably had his apprentices and journeymen working on the 16 rings while he was secretly designing Nenya, Narya, and Vilya.

    re - 2:00 ish
    Yes, Sauron's intent was always to dominate. His master made the mistake of always trying to dominate by force of arms (I say 'mistake' even though technically he won and was only overthrown by an 'act of god,' as it were) and we see that Sauron often intends to dominate in a slightly different way. First he dominates the will of others and this way infiltrates the camps of those he later intends on dominating by force.
    Regardless, Tolkien is pretty clear on this fact; One of the most "evil" characteristics of either Dark Lord is their penchant for dominating others. I think it's therefore safe to assume that the Dwarven rings were intended to dominate the minds of the Dwarf lords (and in this way, neutralise them as a threat in his plans to dominate them by force of arms later, assuming that the rest of the dwarves don't follow their lords in servitude of Sauron).
    It was (possibly) a happy chance of their creation by Aulé and the timing of their creation ("Since they were come in the days of the might of Morgoth, Aulé made the dwarves hardy, to endure"*) that the dwarves were naturally resistant, possibly even immune to the type of mental domination favoured by Sauron. So while he couldn't dominate the dwarves through these rings, they were still highly valued by the dwarves, which made them useful bargaining tools for Sauron when treating with dwarves.
    * = I pulled this quote from memory, being unable to find it through Google. It might be a little different to the actual quote about the nature of dwarves and their creation, but I think I remembered the essence of it accurately enough.

      You could call it resilience, but wasn't it really desperation? Wasn't the destruction of the ring the only reason they survived the 3rd age onslaught and wasn't the only reason that they destroyed the ring desperation; They didn't have any other options, so they needed to destroy it.
      Their great hope was borne of desperation, which is why Gandalf calls it (in jest) "A fool's hope." Well, it's _part_ of the reason.

    Given that Sauron imparted some of his power into 16 of the rings, I wonder if he was diminished in some way when a dwarf ring was destroyed. Might explain part of the reason he wanted to get them back when they didn't serve their original purpose of controling their wearers.

    I've always wondered if Sauron could have given the dwarves Moria. Did he know Durin's Bane was there? What was their relationship? Surely if Sauron could command him to leave, the Balrog would have been more useful to him virtually anywhere else in Middle Earth.

    • @indio4-215
      @indio4-215 2 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      I'm of the belief that Sauron couldn't command Durin's Bane to do as he sees fit in relation to his objective of conquering Middle-earth since Durin's Bane most likely views Sauron as more of an equal since both are Maiar, a comrade if you will even if there's hardly any genuine comradery between the two, especially considering Sauron was weakened without the One Ring in his possession, thus would perhaps be more of an alliance between them rather than a master and servant relationship like what Melkor was to the Balrogs, Sauron, and the dragons as their superior. And I say an alliance is possible since Durin's Bane allowed Sauron's forces that were sent to Moria by Sauron to dwell there with zero issues supposedly. Either that or Sauron chose to leave Durin's Bane be and his forces that were allowed to dwell in Moria was a truce where if you leave me alone, I'll leave you alone.

    • @therealelderking5830
      @therealelderking5830 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I doubt that Sauron could actually command the Balrog to do much. I mean sure, if Sauron told it to kill everyone trying to traverse Moria then it would probably do so.
      But if Sauron wanted Durin’s Bane to actually march on Lothlorien or something, it will nope out of there faster than Melian after Thingol’s death.
      Sauron is technically more equal to the Balrog. In Melkor’s absence, he would only be ‘acting commander’, not their master.

    Actually, we have no indication whether a Ring of Power would turn a Dwarf invisible or not. Such an effect could simply be a side effect for all mortals who put one on. All we know is that the Seven rings did not turn their bearers into wraiths. And consider, would Celebrimbor have given a ring to Durin if he knew it would turn him into a wraith? Remember he did this before Sauron came to collect them.
    Certainly the Dwarves of Thorin and Co. were surprised when Bilbo revealed to them that he had a magic ring that turned him invisible. And they were more familiar with magical things than a Hobbit was.
    Possibly the Rings of Power could have been hidden from all by their bearers. Recall when Bilbo sees one of the Three on Galadriels' finger, because he bears the One. She asks Sam if he could see her ring, and he says No, just a star shining through her finger.
    As for your map at 3:00, showing the locations of the Dwarven clans, I'd be interested as to where you got that information. As far as I know, only the locations of Longbeards, Broadbeams and Firebeards was known. The other four are in the mountains to the east, but beyond that, nothing is known but their names.

    • @mustafaozturk2542
      @mustafaozturk2542 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Then a question for you. IF Celebrimbor knew the rings turn mortals into a wraith would he allow their crafting process?
      Also, Bilbo did not reveal the ring was making him invisible, he lied about the ring to the company but Gandalf didn't believe his story and he thought that ring was a lesser ring of power but Gandalf was already susceptible about his thought until he discovers the lost knowledge about the one ring and he started to think that ring of Bilbo's might be more dangerous than he anticipated.
      To my knowledge Bilbo did not see the Galadriel at all, Frodo, Sam, Merry, and Pippin saw Galadriel.

    • @donaldbadowski290
      @donaldbadowski290 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@mustafaozturk2542 , actually I just realized a mistake in that comment. It wasn't Bilbo, but Frodo who saw the ring on Galadriel's finger. Typo, I knew that.
      To answer your question, I doubt that Celebrimbor ever considered that his rings would go to mortals. I should point out that on other forums, like Reddit, /tolkienfans, this has been a point of contention.
      But consider this. Celebrimbor created those rings, the Seven and the Nine, with the instruction of Sauron. That is 16 rings. Without Sauron, Celebrimbor created the Three. But, Celebrimbor didn't know that those other 16 rings would ever be distributed to Men and other Dwarves. As far as he knew, they were for Elves only, maybe only his Elves, the Noldor and Sindar. It was Sauron, making war on the Elves of Eregion, killing Celebrimbor and collecting those 16 rings who did the distribution. He gave 7 (maybe 6 if the Durin legend is true) to the Dwarves, one for each clan. He had 9 left over, which he distributed as he saw fit to Men who could do him the most good. If he's had more rings, he might have distributed more. It was Sauron who knew for sure the effect they would have on mortal Men, turning them into wraiths. But he didn't know that the Dwarves would not fall into this, and would not be dominated by him. That's why he then went after the Dwarves to collect them back.

    • @mustafaozturk2542
      @mustafaozturk2542 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@donaldbadowski290 That's just a wild guess thats all. All we know is that Celebrimbor forged those 16 rings of power with the instructions of Saurons. Elves are the creation of Iluvatar but the dwarves are not. The owners of 3 elven rings can pass into the spirit realm easily. The rings would cause the wearer to become a creature like Nazgul's if they are the creation of Iluvatar himself. Dwarves didn't turn into a spirit because they were created by Mänwe secretly, they just got independent working power from Iluvatar, that's why their skills increased instead of turning into a spirit. The rings were there to affect the connection between Iluvatar and the wearer.

    • @donaldbadowski290
      @donaldbadowski290 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@mustafaozturk2542 , Dwarves were created by Aule, not Manwe. And it is my personal believe that the rings were meant to tap into the spirit world, to get Ainur who had not taken any physical shape to work for you. But that is just speculation on my part.
