I am going to try this version. I grew up eating a different version made by my Russian grandmother. She used potatoes, ham, cucumber, green apple, peas, and of course, mayo. I know this combination sounds awful, but everyone that has ever tried it, loved it. The cucumber and apple add crunch and lighten the texture.
Thanks George. I'm looking forward to trying this salad. I've often thought that Dill was an underappreciated fresh herb. I've noticed its use in other eastern and central European cuisine such as sausages, Piroshki (baked meat buns) and Zupa Koperkowa (Polish "potato and dill soup" - one of my favourites).
George that was mouthwatering! I had one of my Slovakian roomates, during Masters, doing this exact variation but also with canned spam pork! I would also love to see your version of coleslaw! 😇
We have this salad here in Italy, too. People here prefer more mayo than in the US (where I'm from), I like a lot less so I always make my own and serve it with a bowl of freshly made mayo (Which, of course, I use in the salad as I make it). Always delicious and satisfying and definitely best when served the next day cold from the refrigerator.
Thank you, Chef. This looks great. I am a little nervous about all that dill. But I'll try it. Definitely have guests. Guests are great fun to watch. Was that a Hestan titanium pan you were boiling the potatoes in? Warm regards from British Columbia.
Surprisingly not. I thought the same. Tommy uses canned peas so I felt that these would be a little too firm. Actually they were perfect. Thanks for reaching out. All the best!
Russian salad used to be very popular here in Greece up until the 90s. I make a homemade version but without the mayo. The pickles are my favourite ingredient. I guess it's not a Russian salad without the mayo 😆
I am finding out that there are so many variations of the salad it’s incredible. I guess that’s what happens when you have a recipe from 1860! Good to hear from you Maria! Stay healthy!
@@AwareHouseChef Indeed there are many variations, we usually don't use peas here in Greece. But I think the basic ingredients are potatoes and mayonnaise. Always happy to see your videos my friend. ☺️ Take care ♥️
Sigh, yeah... making your own is a solution you need a stable and less busy lifestyle for so I don't have mayo anymore... god I miss Mayo. Why does all commercial mayo have to be made out of seed oil. :_(
There is scallion. I’m not sure about it being necessary to make the mayo yourself but if you do a good job of it of course it would be delicious. Organic avocado commercial mayo… gone in seconds. All the best!
It is Tom’s recipe. That’s how he makes it. But after tasting it, I could see that the mushiness and texture of the yoke would take away from the lightness of the salad. Give it a try with the yolk and let me know how your turns out! Thanks for reaching out!
That’ll do it. My dad had lobster pots growing up and to this day I avoid lobster. We only ate Russian salad around the holidays and it was a treat. Cheers!
I cannot stop eating this salad! So flavorful. Give it a shot!
Ikr it’s very good my mom makes it amazing!! 😻
Thanks for sharing!
@@AwareHouseChef no problem!!
I just have one question. For how many people is this?
One?😂 4-6. Cheers
Best salad ever. In Montenegro I can’t imagine any holiday without this salad. We do add diced ham and hard boiled egg inside also
Thanks Luca! Som any variations! It’s amazing! All the best!
You always have the most unique and interesting videos. The topics are so varied!
Thank you Dustin! Your kindness is so encouraging. I appreciate you. Cheers!
Yum! I love dill! Interesting salad, another on my wish list for time to make. I was salivating before I even opened the video. Mmmm, can't wait.
You’re going to love it!

@@AwareHouseChef Thanks, George. Always a class act!
Also persians love this awsome food and serve as sandwich
Thanks for the food inspiration. I will make a low carb version with swede. Maybe I will add some cauliflower rice.
Great! Let me know how you like it!

My pleasure! Yes it was and I have no affiliation with Hestan. Add the dill slowly until it pleases your palate.
Looks good, Chef. As the peas weren't cooked, were they not a bit al dente? I would be tempted to simmer them in salted water for a few minutes first.
Surprisingly not. I thought the same. Tommy uses canned peas so I felt that these would be a little too firm. Actually they were perfect. Thanks for reaching out. All the best!
This is a wonderful salad. Just interested in why no tomatoes are used?

Dill pickles or sweet pickles?
@@mariasmith5272 dill
Are those dill pickles or sweet pickles?
They are dill pickles
Commercial mayo is a big problem, estrogenic, all soy.
I do not eat soy bean oil and rarely have edamame unless it’s organic and non GMO. I look at it as a splurge.
Sigh, yeah... making your own is a solution you need a stable and less busy lifestyle for so I don't have mayo anymore... god I miss Mayo. Why does all commercial mayo have to be made out of seed oil. :_(
Looks great….organic organic organic😵💫
Thank you Veronica! Cheers!
From Estearn Europe here. I didn t ever see scallion or onion in it. If you use commercial mayo people won t eat it and they can tell.

Why not the yoke

Nooo you need ham or even a poached chicken breast also the eggs are optional

chicken?
maybe its cause I grew up eating this salad all the time but I think this is the most boring salad ever... to each their own of course

Potatoes are over cooked too sof
It's begging for bacon.
Yum!
