There are tons of cards that replace the mimic. Don't fall into the trap by overloading on one cog in the machine. Mimic isn't the bottleneck of the combo.
I'd say Vanquisher's Banner would make sense here, given that they run on the same mechanics. That and the Banner would have slightly better staying power since artifact removal is not as common as creature removal (which CAN take out the Mimic). Plus having both gives Ballista +2/+2, making the combo a touch more efficient. I'd also swap Ather Hub for Unclaimed Territory since that also uses the type matters mechanic and... Wait, does this deck even USE Energy?
You may also want to consider Desecrated Tomb for resilience. If you Mimic dies, then you can just cast the ever dying Ballista over and over getting a Bat from Tomb every time. Get infinite bats and then cry as your opponent casts Goblin Chainwhirler the next turn since the bats don't have haste.
Not going to happen. Aggro is too fast at this point for this combo to be a problem, and two of the four cards necessary for this to work rotate out next set. Plus, due to the nature of the combo every step of it is sorcery speed. Just mess with one of the pieces, problem solved. So, it's a nice win-option, but a deck needs to do a lot of work to get it done. This is by far not copy-cat stupid.
Bontu's Monument as well. Zero cost Walking Ballista Mill out their life. or Diligent Excavator mill out their deck. There are a few different win cons
Arcane Adaptation -> Choose Zombie -> Walking Ballista is in the Graveyard a Zombie Cast Lilianas -3 -> You can cast Zombies from the Graveyard -> You can cast Walking Ballista from the Graveyard Metallic Mimic -> Choose Zombie -> Zombies get a +1/+1 counter when they enter the battlefield -> Walking Ballista gets a +1/+1 counter when it enters the battlefield You can cast Walking Ballista for 2x0 colorless mana-> Walking Ballista is a 0/0 creature without a +1/+1 counter So by Metallic Mimic and Arcane Adaptation you can cast Metallic Mimic for 0 Mana as a 0/0 with 1 +1/+1 upon entering the battlefield. And by Arcane Adaptation and Liliana you can cast it from the Graveyard Finally Walking Ballista can detach 1 +1/+1 counter to deal 1 damage to 1 player or creature. Simply retrieve it endlessly from the Graveyard for 0 Mana and always use the +1/+1 counter from Metallic Mimic to deal 1 damage killing it in the process.
You can name construct with the mimic. Doesn't have to be zombie. Adaptation adds creature types so you can name construct for the early game and still combo later.
She's also pretty sweet with Rooftop storm (though not standard legal. Modern here boys). Adaption allows you to play every creature in your yard.... FOR FREE! over and over. Use a sac outlet and something that either gains a life or drains a life... ggbwp.
The reason the combo wouldn't be banned is that it is easy to disrupt. You can exile the graveyard, kill the mimic if they don't have the mana to recast it or have a soul warden effect. Means that slots might have to be used on protecting the combo. Dive Down, and Blink of an Eye can solve 2 of the 3.
Elijah Kleinman if you have mana to recast the mimic you are still able to go off. Means either the opponent needs to be tapped out or you wait for Lily until you can recast mimic. Either way protecting the combo cuts into consistency. Either way this combo can be hated on by other decks by what js already in sideboards. That said I like the chances of this going off game one.
Kinda confused on the infinite part...if your can only use planeswalker ability once? I do like the contract combo. Swap in very cheap cmc creatures, arcane adapt, contract win con.
Fear|essHyena™ but her ability last until the end of the turn. She doesnt just let you cast one target zombie but ALL zombies which allows for the combo
Fear|essHyena™ zombies can be cast from the graveyard until end of turn meaning you can recast walking ballista the amount of times needed to deal with their Shalai (or other creature based outs) and their life total.
You could also use Vanquisher's Banner since that gives us the same +1/+1 as Mimic while also being a straight Artifact, meaning Chainwhirler (and most other creatures) can't touch it. Cost a bit more but you also get a card draw every time Ballista comes back, so it evens out.
As I say with all these infinite combo videos the Aethergeode Miner combo was as simple as it gets (much simpler than this) and saw zero play however this does look sweet. Also adaptation has big opportunity costs however making all creatures demons hmmmm. Now where are those disallows.
Make sure you name construct with the mimic, not zombie. Adaptation adds creature types, not replace. So you can freely name construct and use your balistas before getting the combo off. There is zero advantage to naming zombie with this deck. The only time you could be netting grindy value off your other creatures is if almost all of the combo is assembled already. By then, you should be winning so it doesn't matter. Almost always, you should just name construct and play your balistas early to stay alive till you assemble the combo. Just a tip.
Oh geez... another person naming zombies with the mimic. You name CONSTRUCT. Adaptation adds creature types so you don't need to name zombie with mimic. That way you get to use the balista ealier and get natural advantage before you combo. Unless you are building a zombie deck. Which you aren't. If you could annotate that it should be naming construct, that'd be cool. Make sure anyone trying this at least gets a fighting chance.
Which is why you name zombie with arcane adaptation. Mimic doesn't have anything to do with that. You don't name zombies with both, that's a waste. You name zombies with adaptation and construct with mimic.
We can call the deck Walking Dead (Zombies and Walking Ballista)
love it
You can also use reckless fireweaver or cabal paladin instead of mimic.
Its even on curve... damn thats sick.
*Opens hand with Combo pieces + Chart a Course*
Yeah, this game will be fun
it's so sweet haha
besides metallic mimic, the combo also works with sai, as it makes an infinite number of tokens, or diligent excavator as it just decks your opponent
wow, diligent excavator! that's an awesome find!
That may actually be a way to get Mill to work in Standard again. I'd love to see that :)
That Magical Xmas Land voice 🤣
smooth like butter
Although I hate infinate combos, I gotta admit this is pretty cool!
glad we could overcome your hatred of awesome things
Affinity For Commander why would anyone ever hate combos, infinite combos especially.
I prefer to win using big stompy creatures. Just my opinion though, you should play the way that you enjoy it!
I would like to watch a Video with that deck!
Same! Hate infinite combos but this one looks sweet
No Negates to protect your combo in the 75?
i kinda liked duress better because you can curve into the win that way but negate works too
Tell those raptors to just chill.
Add in an Open The Graves and/or Desecrated Tomb, just for the token swarm even if Mimic isn't on the field.
Mack Sealand or Bontu's Monument for drain triggers with or without the Mimic.
There are tons of cards that replace the mimic. Don't fall into the trap by overloading on one cog in the machine. Mimic isn't the bottleneck of the combo.
I LOVE this combo! Sooo coooooool.
it is one of the cooler ones we've done for sure
I actually really like this deck
same!
Can we all agree, after a year and 6 months I think Mr. Complainey Man deserves a return.
Can we get more pretty deece? These videos are awesome.
I'm most excited for psychic corrosion from M19!
What was the song that was used?
LOL Nice. i cant wait.
Did you get that Miata?
I'd say Vanquisher's Banner would make sense here, given that they run on the same mechanics. Using Bontu's Monument instead of Metallic Mimic does the same thing while making the combo immune to creature removal and can go off on turn 5.
Brilliant
I think it would be interesting if this was mixed with the construct infinite combo.
Does this combo work if they have a damping sphere on the battlefield. (Assuming Standard decks sideboard that card)
If this combo pokes its head above water competitively, Arcane Adaptation will get banned. Calling it here. The combo falls apart without it.
that would be awesome
Not going to happen. Aggro is too fast at this point for this combo to be a problem, and two of the four cards necessary for this to work rotate out next set. Well, I was thinking about Skirk Prospector + Bontu´s Monument.
instead of metallic mimic you can use Bontu's monument and drain for infinity :)
Why not go Esper and slide teshar in there too. Overlapping combos seem good. Lol
love where your head's at
Isn't 3 Search for Azcanta too much?
Your commentary is hilarious 🤣😂
Bontu's Monument as well. Zero cost Walking Ballista Mill out their life. or Diligent Excavator mill out their deck. There are a few different win cons
Decklist?
Hold on a secound wont kheladesh rotate when core 19 comes out?! Like that whole block leaves right?
Rob Carlson Nope. Next rotation isn't until the fall.
the set after core 19 boy
I don't understand the combo. He makes it seem like it can attack infinitely but how?
Arcane Adaptation -> Choose Zombie -> Walking Ballista is in the Graveyard a Zombie
Cast Lilianas -3 -> You can cast Zombies from the Graveyard -> You can cast Walking Ballista from the Graveyard
Metallic Mimic -> Choose Zombie -> Zombies get a +1/+1 counter when they enter the battlefield -> Walking Ballista gets a +1/+1 counter when it enters the battlefield
You can cast Walking Ballista for 2x0 colorless mana-> Walking Ballista is a 0/0 creature without a +1/+1 counter
So by Metallic Mimic and Arcane Adaptation you can cast Metallic Mimic for 0 Mana as a 0/0 with 1 +1/+1 upon entering the battlefield.
And by Arcane Adaptation and Liliana you can cast it from the Graveyard
Finally Walking Ballista can detach 1 +1/+1 counter to deal 1 damage to 1 player or creature.
For what ever reason I always end up playing black/white and always end up with trespassers curse so this combo does nothing.
i wanna use it since I have most of the cards but I feel like I will get yelled at for that
She's also pretty sweet with Rooftop storm (though not standard legal. Modern here boys). Adaption allows you to play every creature in your yard.... FOR FREE! over and over. Use a sac outlet and something that either gains a life or drains a life... ggbwp.
Oddly foiled by authority of the consul.
Elliott Canada use aetherflux reservoir to out life gain your opponent and deal 50 damage to them
ooooooof that's true
The reason the combo wouldn't be banned is that it is easy to disrupt. You can exile the graveyard, kill the mimic if they don't have the mana to recast it or have a soul warden effect. Means that slots might have to be used on protecting the combo. Dive Down, and Blink of an Eye can solve 2 of the 3.
You can still wrath your opponent's board
Elijah Kleinman if you have mana to recast the mimic you are still able to go off. Means either the opponent needs to be tapped out or you wait for Lily until you can recast mimic. Either way protecting the combo cuts into consistency. Either way this combo can be hated on by other decks by what js already in sideboards.
That said I like the chances of this going off game one.
Use Vizer of the Scorpion and Gravecrawler to gain life as long as you have four mana, one of them being black. Boom free life and card draws.
Wow
i know right
Yea I'm going to have to try a brew lol
Kinda confused on the infinite part...if your can only use planeswalker ability once?
I do like the contract combo. Swap in very cheap cmc creatures, arcane adapt, contract win con.
Fear|essHyena™ but her ability last until the end of the turn. She doesnt just let you cast one target zombie but ALL zombies which allows for the combo
Fear|essHyena™ zombies can be cast from the graveyard until end of turn meaning you can recast walking ballista the amount of times needed to deal with their Shalai (or other creature based outs) and their life total.
Lol rtfc
Darien W ahhh tyvm for clearing that up!
I thought it isn't allowed to pay 0 for X
Metallic Mimic has 1 toughness making it unplayable in the Whirling Chains of Standard.
But once you have the combo down, you can cast mimic from the graveyard and combo from there. Not a huge deal if it is dead.
TWO CHAINS!
You could also use Vanquisher's Banner since that gives us the same +1/+1 as Mimic while also being a straight Artifact, meaning Chainwhirler (and most other creatures) can't touch it. Cost a bit more but you also get a card draw every time Ballista comes back, so it evens out.
We all know how to make this deck more competitive, add 3 copies of the Scarab God.
This deck doesn even need blue for arcane adaption, you can just use maskwood nexus from kaldheim now xD
u/b zombies with 4 arcane adaptation instead of mastery
As I say with all these infinite combo videos the Aethergeode Miner combo was as simple as it gets (much simpler than this) and saw zero play however this does look sweet. Also adaptation has big opportunity costs however making all creatures demons hmmmm. Now where are those disallows.
rad
thanks!
Used Mazda Miada is a pretty good vehicle but not as good as Led Zeppelin or that limousine card from Capenna
Red will still dominate till rotation
the combo is better with plague belcher just because he can smash for 5 every turn
I like legendary bear, make rg monsters good again.
I tried it, its terrible, so hard to find you combo pieces and its disrupted very easily by killing you mimic
you can use bontu monument or desecrated tomb instead of mimic
the point is, you have to find and play 4 different pieces which do nothing by themselves, it can take so long for that to happened, usually too long.
>tfw core set 2019 has better tribal synergies than either Ixalan set
Lightning Bolt Needs to be reprinted for standard.... again.
Degenerate....
I love it, so going to use this at FMN.
gotta let us know how it goes
Make sure you name construct with the mimic, not zombie. Adaptation adds creature types, not replace. So you can freely name construct and use your balistas before getting the combo off.

Just a tip.
Chromium bb
Expect ballista to be banned if this catches on.
Expect balista to rotate before the next ban changes.
Lol
Oh geez... another person naming zombies with the mimic.
James Coal lily's -3 doesn't allow you to cast constructs from the gy
Which is why you name zombie with arcane adaptation. Mimic doesn't have anything to do with that.
You don't name zombies with both, that's a waste. You name zombies with adaptation and construct with mimic.
James Coal hmm ok I see
Except kaladesh will rotate out of standard when core hits
Nope. Set after.
Nah
ban ballista pleeeaaaase! are we all not sick of this walking broken card
But if u keep on using Liliana -4 she will just die
Anthony Davis re read the card
Aaand now we got Heliod ballista infinite combo
