  • Four decades after its 1973 cinema release, the unique British cult classic The Wicker Man still holds an enduring fascination for audiences all over the world. In this 40th anniversary edition, the film is presented as The Final Cut, a version which has never before been restored and never before been seen in UK cinemas. Approved by director Robin Hardy, The Final Cut is the finest and most complete version of The Wicker Man. This 40th anniversary edition is every Wicker Man fan’s perfect ending to a much mythicised search for the most complete version of the film. Having left no stone unturned in the search for the original film materials, the ghosts have now been laid to rest, as we can finally and happily confirm, that this is The Final Cut.

You'd never think Edward Woodward wasn't Scottish.

I always thought the piano bit Lord Summerisle plays is very significant foreshadowing/symbolism -- He plunks out the first few notes simply, like he barely knows how to play, then the final note is this really complex, sophisticated, jazzy chord. Shows the island has a lot more going on under the surface than Sgt. Howie realizes.

If I was standing before lord summerisle and it looked like Christopher Lee that smile towering in height and a sinister smile, I'd try get back to my Cessna plane and out of There , Howie should realize he's the only Pakistani on that island and in the minority

Technically he isn’t a villain, he truly believes in what he’s doing is for the best. Also they gave the Sargent tons of chances to be saved from being sacrificed, but due to the Sargents faith he ended up being perfect for their ritual.
It’s just a tragedy for everyone because they deluded themselves into thinking any of their gods would save them.

@@masterzombie161Lol, he's totally the villain because in the end he still sacrifices a human, regardless if he actually gave opportunities for the sergeant to flee. Also believing into something doesn't suddenly make you stop being a villain, otherwise 80% of comic book villains wouldn't actually be villains, don't you think that Thanos actually believed in what he pursued? He sacrificed half of the universe to "help" it.

"Naturally! It's much too dangerous to jump through the fire with your clothes on"
While it's funny that he makes it sound like the reason is so obvious, it also reminds me how Alice in Wonderland keeps bumping into characters who act as if she's the stupid or mad one for not realising things that are obvious to them, and emphasises that Howie is totally out of his depth here.

Unfortunately it cuts out just before this absolute belter of a line, when Howie asks if the young people are taught anything of Jesus:
“Himself the son of a virgin… impregnated, I believe, by a ghost. Do sit down, Sergeant. Shocks are so much better absorbed with the knees bent.”

I remember the first time I saw this film, the performances are unbelievably good. Edward Woodward is superb, but Sir Christopher Lee is phenomenal as Lord Summerisle. I loved how his Lordship was courteous and affable for the most part, while Sergeant Neil Howie is anything but, to the point his inner demons were bubbling nicely to the surface. For much of the film, I wondered if what was happening onscreen was actually happening or it was Sergeant Howie’s latent paranoia getting the better of him…

The "gently Johnny" scene is not in the original movie and is Robin Hardy's (the director's) biggest reason for creating the final cut. There's also a orgy Howie spots whilst out walking and when going from house to house during his investigation a naked girl in a bath. The "director's cut" of the movie has even more scenes than the final cut, scenes in England before going to Summerisle of Howie in church, getting the Rowan Morrison case etc,
