  • The very affordable Canon RF 100 - 400 is an excellent lens and despite being a full-frame lens is the best zoom you can currently buy for Canon crop sensor mirrorless cameras like the R10 and R7

    As a retired person 70+ I sold my pro gear due to weight, becomes hard to handle for extended periods. I now shoot with this lens and have sold many large consumer wildlife prints snapped with it. The light weight is really nice and there has never been a complaint on image quality from anyone purchasing my prints. With over 50 years of photography (wildlife & studio) I find this a great lens. If I were a pro traveling the world seeking wildlife then the abuse the white lens can take would make it my choice but for what I do the RF 100-400 gives me images that suit myself and my clients just fine.

    I have a Canon R6 Mk 1. After I watched this video and ordered this lens as I’m just an amateur. I plan to take it to the Alaska cruise. In your video, you mentioned RF 1.4x extender. The reason you didn’t use 2.0x extender is it possible it will reduced 2 f-stops? As for EF vs RF, is it better save my money to get the RF version? RF versions costs approximately 500+ more than EF If in the long run, it’s better then I will saved up the money. I always enjoyed your videos. I appreciate your op. Thanks.

      The 1.4 would be my recommendation and remember it can seem like you are not getting sharp shots if atmospheric distortion is happening and even on cool days over a short distance you can get heat waves that the lenses see.

I notice that the R10 doesn’t respond very quickly when it turns off, so I have to pump the shutter to keep it alive! I could change the settings also. I do like the portability but the R5 combo does beat it for image quality. However the R10 combo is very good and with DXO Photolab gets good results

    Hi there, I was thinking about purchasing this lens but two things stopped me. 1) I would use it mainly in woods with poor light and I was afraid of denoising every single image taken. 2) I am also afraid of diffraction when using it on my R7, since I have seen it is quite prone to it.
    Don’t know if my reasoning makes sense.

    I was just considering purchasing the 100-500 except for the price even though it's $200 off right now, it sounds like this 100-400 with the extender is the way to go.

    • @photorectoby
      @photorectoby  ปีที่แล้ว

      The 100-500 is an excellent lens and is faster with more reach but if you want to use it with extenders it is very annoying that it no longer compacts nicely when an extender is attached.

    • @RogerZoul
      @RogerZoul ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The copy-to-copy variation in the cheap lenses have burned me time and time again. Why should one have to deal with poor lenses and trying to work around their limitations? No one ever talks about this. I would not keep a TC locked to the 100-500 as I don’t wish to be shooting at f10 all the time and it is not that hard to remove it and it stores away nicely. It’s not even a problem, after over two years of owning it.

    • @photorectoby
      @photorectoby  ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@RogerZoul I have been reviewing lenses on TH-cam for over a decade and in those early days the variation from lens to lens was a real issue but mostly from 3rd party manufacturers. Today things seem to be much better and although this lens is very affordable I would not be concerned with getting a bad copy. For some photographers the value of the 100-400 is excellent and they are very happy to work within the limitations. Some photographers are wiling and able to pay much more for the 100-500. I am glad we have choices.

    • @RogerZoul
      @RogerZoul ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@photorectoby Not sure how to connect reviewing lens and copy variation of lenses, but I have been buying and using cameras and lenses for a decade and my EF 100-400 mk 2 was never sharp across many Canon bodies and now my RF 800 F11 is similar. Not only that, but that lens pulls to the right as you fire a burst of shots. I have 3 buddies with the same lens and none of theirs does that, and theirs are sharper than mine.

    On digital-picture test charts sharpness on 400mm doesn't look great. And on f/11 it's not become better. Many old lenses with TC, like ef 200 2.8, or 300 4 is and many variations of 70-200 can be sharper on 400mm. I would say, if i need compact "landscape" telephoto zoom, i would prefer EF 70-300 IS usm II or one of 70-200 4.
    This lens is great idea, but like many non-l recent canon lenses - not great realization.
