I am a foreigner staying in India for two years already. I mostly buy online to avoid small scams and do a lot of research before buying. For a backpack, 500 is within reasonable range. At 300, I would happily take it. But 250 is a shockingly cheap price. You can only get a cheap messenger bag at this price. I even feel bad for the seller. 😅

People from countries that barter everything would come in and do the same thing. $30,000 used car and they would be like “$15,000 or I go” I’d just be like “ok, nice to meet you and have a nice day”. They'll just throw it out and buy another if it's not working anymore. They're taught to scam the naive and argue prices. Venders will always upcharge even to locals but locals are smart to haggle on it to get the price to what the item is actually worth to both parties. But vendors when seeing an opportunity with a likely culturally illiterate Westerner will prey on them to make those Rupees. They will scam, cheat, steal and rob you because you're a naive westerner who agrees to it. People don't want to accept that and think it's mean to think or something when it's literally the truth. They are all taught to act that way with buying and selling goods. It's why in the west, they typically act in a hostile way in stores and restaurants when they can't get deals or their coupons don't work. I worked at a movie theater a few years ago that played their films and the most hostile customers who would get literally threatening, sometimes violent and scary were them who didn't like that the popcorn was over priced and that the smaller sizes were only 25 cents cheaper each smaller size when they felt like it should be nearly free to have a scoop of popcorn (one scoop of popcorn was $5.50). I felt their pain tho. Theaters are a scam. Smuggle your food in guys or eat beforehand. It's not worth it. To be clear, it's definitely annoying but I don't hate anybody or feel animosity towards them (except when they throw things in anger or spit on the floor) but most aren't that way. Just usually angry and yell when you tell them there's no negotiating. Only buy or don't, price is fixed.
