@@james_1878 depression is literally a sickness, you can get clinical, of course, but it's not an emotion like happines, you cannot say "oof, i run out of gums, i'm depressed". It's not like sadness, not at all. Clinical depression means you will not be "cured" in your life. Depression is far above sadness.
Doménico Viejo there’s a difference between feeling depressed and actual depression, one is a reaction to their failures and another is a mental illness. You got that right but you can feel depressed without having clinical depression
Watching this review was a profoundly emotional experience for me. During the past 6 months I’ve become quite depressed, and my anxiety have gotten bad to the point of it affectng my day-to-day life. While never a big fan of Mac Miller, I fell completely in love with his Tiny Desk Concert, and have for a couple months now listened through the thing many times each day (often upwards of 20 times a day during weekends) to calm down. Visiting my family over Christmas, my dad walked in on me listening to the Tiny Desk one evening and sat down to listen with me. He asked what was playing and we talked a little about the music. When I mentioned Mac was gone, he sat still for a few seconds before bursting out in tears, saying the music was beautiful. Watching this review made me tear up as well, reminding me of that evening. Idk why im writing this into a melon comment-section, but thanks so much for crying Anthony
Safe travels through those times. It can get really dark, and really scary, but remember this human moments. When things really kick you, having a human interaction as pure as that to recall can really ground you. Be good to yourself
Your story almost got *me* crying too, since I had a similar experience recently with my typically non-emotive pops, when we went to see 1917. I heard & saw him cry about three times, & it shocked me immensely. Had no power to keep from getting choked up myself. Moments of vulnerability like that from our father figures are great, especially ones from the Baby Boom generation (those predisposed with a mindset of crying being a sign of emotional weakness). Thanks for sharing your story, my man.
2:38 you can see the progression from hating this sound to loving it right here. I think if he rereviewed swimming right after this it would get a similar score to circles, but this isn't changing your opinion because of Mac's passing in my opinion, he's changing it because he gained perspective and the idea Mac wanted to present
Chet Ciccone tbh it took me like 3 or 4 listen through a to really appreciate it. The more you go back and listen the more you pick up on that made it such a great album.

I love the fact that even though Anthony's comment section is usually memes and jokes people are actually connecting with his reaction and giving their thoughts on this song. I never took the time to listen to Mac's music but this song really hit, then I watched this video and it made me even more emotional. Honestly it was like seeing a good friend cry. ❤
@@niles1492 Me too. But seeing how everyone's reacting reassures me that Anthony's fans do actually care about him. When I got into his vids in 2018, I was annoyed and a little worried about his "fans" behavior on all his social medias, but I guess it's all in good fun and none of them actually dislike him; just a friend they all like to tease due to inside jokes, I'm assuming :)
I'm a Mac fan, so obviously biased, but I would highly recommend listening to his journey through the world of music. It's mind blowing to see the transitions he made as a person and artist from starting as a teenager into what Circles is. Yes, he had some party music and that's great for parties, but near the end of Blue Slide Park and Macadelic forward he really became a poet. Very self aware, yet still struggling with his inner demons. There are just too many prophetic lines all throughout Faces, WMWTSO, GO:OD AM, Swimming it's a lot to take in. Overall, a pretty great lyricist and producer. Although I'm heartbroken from his passing it does make me happy that more people have given him a chance, and that he won't be forgotten for a long time. Regardless of your opinion on him and his music, peace and love to you all and stay safe.
What fucks me up the most is he didn't sound defeated... I feel like despite everything he was feeling he still left room in his heart for a better tomorrow for himself. I'm literally sobbing as I type this years and many many many listens later... Rest in peace, Mac😢💔
oh god, that last "forever" thanks for doing this melon. you kinda just held a moment of catharsis for everyone to gather and not be alone with it. hope you doin' okay fam
I never gave Mac’s music a chance, just because it wasn’t my thing. Seeing melon cry made me jump on Spotify and listen to Good News myself. Ain’t looking for pity points, cos I’m fine now, but I suffered badly with depression around the time this album came around, and was at my lowest point not far before the song was released. I listened to Good News and just started sobbing. He spoke directly to me, (and a lot of other people, I’m sure) and my heart broke thinking about his struggle in the lead-up to his death. Watched his tiny desk concert too and was blown away by his creativity and humour, plus Thundercat was there. Need I say more? Eventually got to the album, adored it, and got hit with the realisation that we would never get another active project from him again. Rest in Paradise, Mac. The world was too unkind to you 💙
For years Fantano has been telling us to 'hit that like, subscribe, and please dont cry' But for the first time.. im the one that feels like I should be saying 'please dont cry'
Man reading these comments is bringing tears to my eyes.... It's crazy how truly unifying Mac's pain was and just how we can all relate to that kind of struggle and suffering .... I know he's looking down smiling on us all. From Pittsburgh to yinz all thank you for showing just how much he meant to this world. Its really astounding for real
Anthony, I know we all meme the hell out of every thing, but I think now is a good time to just say we appreciate you and the community you’ve built around the beauty of music! There’s been so many artists I’ve found from you, so many funny internet jokes to laugh at, and just quality content from a quality person. Thanks Mr. Melon Man for always being the internets busiest and most beloved music nerd ❤️❤️
I like Anthony but the 'community' on this channel is toxic as fuck and pretty much 90% comprised of edgy white kids who think memes are a substitute for a personality.
As an addict who is in recovery, this shit makes me cry jus thinking about it. I've been doing drugs my entire life. Moms was giving me pills/alcohol before I began using on my own at 16( she also smoked my first bit of weed with me on my birthday when I turned 16) and from there it was on to cocaine, crack, more pills, even did ice a handful of times... but through all of it.... I have just been so goddamned tired. I am nearing 40 and.. well. Because of Narcotics Anonymous, I have a life. A real life. Mac's struggle is heard. ❤
I feel like part of what makes this album so sad is that Mac was clearly so self aware and so aware in general about the human experience, yet he still couldn’t shake his demons.
Same. The video felt a bit weird. I feel like melon severely underrated swimming but music is subjective so I get that. That's why I wasn't really anticipating him to cry which gave me the impression that it was fake. After watching the whole review though I get it and agree with what he says about the track. Cried my eyes out too when watching the music video.
Jokes aside I truly love and respect Anthony Fantano very much. He listens to so much music, he has heard and seen so much shit and he still manages to have emotional reactions like this and talk with such respect about artists and their work. You’re a real inspiration Anthony
This is actually a rare moment. I've never thought I'd see a track drive Melon to tears, and to think that Mac Miller would be the one to push Fantano to this point is even more amazing given how he judged Swimming.
I think it shows that Fantano really loves music and does set his opinions aside. You wouldn't criticize an album like Swimming and then cry like this unless it's because you are passionate.

This comment made me cry my eyes out, I hope you’re doing better buddy
He didn’t bust out crying . Why lie like that man
Ok
2:38 you can see the progression from hating this sound to loving it right here. I think if he rereviewed swimming right after this it would get a similar score to circles, but this isn't changing your opinion because of Mac's passing in my opinion, he's changing it because he gained perspective and the idea Mac wanted to present
Honestly I doubt it, circles is an almost totally different sound from swimming in a lot of ways. I personally liked circles tons more than swimming.

If you liked the vibe of this song you should really give Swimming a shot.
Man I wished this happen more often (not the crying and death of artists...), instead of people just tossing memes into comments every video
@@MrGreenHulk I will definitely check out his work!!!
Damn I really wanted to reach out and give him a hug when he started crying

Wow when you cried I didn’t expect that. I cried to this song as well. It really hit hard Anthony.
The world was too unkind to you 💙
His Tiny Desk got me into his music, this song broke me as someone that can relate deeply. Circles is his best album by far

This comment is SO important.
Very well said! Couldn't agree more💕💕
As an addict who is in recovery, this shit makes me cry jus thinking about it. ❤

Plot twist: He was
Thought he hammed it up a bit when he said “oh shit” and rubbed his eyes. Came off as a bit fake.
Jokes aside I truly love and respect Anthony Fantano very much. He listens to so much music, he has heard and seen so much shit and he still manages to have emotional reactions like this and talk with such respect about artists and their work. You’re a real inspiration Anthony
Hope you’re okay dude. I really hope this didn’t hit you the way it did because you relate to macs mindset. Big love dude
Adam Hipwell I relate to macs mindset , beautifully dark
@@anthonyr5763 I don't think it's a beautifully dark mindset, I think he took something that was dark and horrible in his head and made it beautiful

Showing your emotion is more courageous than holding it in. I respect you Melon, within the oceans of your fanbase.
