A couple weeks after you posted this video my lfs had bowfin in stock, just got one and am loving him.

I have befriended a wild bowfin ( aka choupique in louisiana). It is over 2 feet long, comes when i call, eats some treats and hangs out with me. He is a gorgeous fish with that beautiful rippling fin.
Going to pick mine up at the ups store today! I seen that same video on Facebook from Jonahs aquarium. You must of got yours one day earlier. I’ve been waiting to get a bowfin forever, so I bought 5! lol

SC Fish Keeping oh yea they acclimated nicely. I’ve had all the native species you keep for the most part over the years (muskie one of my all time favorites). I would catch babies from rivers and lakes in Pennsylvania. We have bowfin up here I’ve caught a good many adults, but I’ve been after a baby for years! I’ve only ever even seen one 3-4” bowfin in the Wild and I missed it. Lol been watching forever to buy one but they’re always out of stock. Thank you Jonahs Aquarium and Mark! And keep making your awesome videos Nick, you inspired me to get back into keeping fish again. Especially native predators, where it all began for me as a kid!!!! ❤️ 💪 🐟

We currently have 2 bowfin that are almost 8 inches both males as they have the blue fins. They are in a 55gal and have been for almost a year now. They nip each other but don't do any damage. They are housed with a 10in silver arowana, 8in hujeta gar, 8in bullhead, and 2 silver shiners used to be 5 but they did eat 3 of those. We feed live minnows and one of the bowfin also eats massivore pellets. Just wanted to let u know they can be sucessful together.
Good to know!! I'd like to be able to keep them together for awhile and see how they do!

As a FL bass angler I can not stand bowfin or mudfish which is what they are called down. They are not scares at all here! You can catch them to your hearts content haha! With all that said.... Great video Zac!

@@SCFishKeeping I had one bite my thumb when I was 9, as you know they have some nasty teeth so between that and them tearing up my tackle they are not on my favorite list haha. Still love all your other fish 😍🐟

I was netting nano fish in the Santa fe river In FL, and I caught one that was about 1 and 1/2 inch long
I like the 🏈 team names idea...Wolfy=Wolverines...Husky=Huskers...Bucky=Buckeyes. They "tackle" each other too much for cute little cartoon duck names. Lol

They're pretty common in the Wisconsin River and often swallow hooks completely. The large ones put up a pretty good fight, but dogfish were considered to be "trash fish" when I was a kid.

What would cause a cloudy tank? Tried adding the bacteria, waiting 2 weeks on water change, tried the clarity that was a joke, got the white padding for pre filter to clear water and still cloudy. Doing a 50 percent or better water change tomorrow and see what happens but been almost a month since it's been clear and driving me crazy it won't or I can't get it to clear up
they have a great pattern on dark sub
im setting up my big tank again and was debating one of these! either that or sunfish and perch tank we will see

@@SCFishKeeping will do man! Only got room for one big tank. Choices are limited. Had the south African bichirs before those are pretty similar to bowfin. Mine actually swam around all the time

They're common in streams where I grew up, and can put up a fight when caught. They're called Grinnell here.

I've caught a number of dogfish at my cabin-lake in Wisco about the size of the thumbnail you used.
My own observations:
- Like other rough fish, they're really heavy for their length
- Adults have jaw-bones like steel
- They hang at the bottom of the shallow, murkier parts of the lake (2-5ft)
- Surface often, but rarely ever "jump"
- When hooked, they dive down and use their weight like a catfish. Pike, walleye and bass will thrash, jump, and fight the line.
Not something I would ever target for fishing but now and then I'll accidentally hook one and the adults can be absolute tanks.
As for potential names, because I know them as dogfish: Pluto, Cujo, Lassie, Hooch, Shadow, Beethoven, Otis -- you get the gist.
Definitely appreciate this information!! One of my favorite things about keeping native fish is being able to compare their behavior in the tank with their behavior fishing!

@@SCFishKeeping I'm a Michigan fan, so I think one should be Wolverine. You're a Nebraska fan, so one should be Husker. And one can be any other Big 10 mascot. The amount of fighting and aggression you are likely to see from these youngsters makes college football teams sound appropriate. Hmmm or maybe hockey teams?

Amia calva ,Bowfin, are my favorite fish of all time, but their size makes them hard to care for. There is an unrelated fish that has convergently evolved to be strikingly similar in behavior and appearance, but only gets 2" long max, The central mudminnow, Umbra limi. I've raised both, and they're basically miniature bowfins.

I dont know if it would be legal or not, but have you ever considered getting a snakehead? I saw the dot on the tail and it reminded me of a bullseye snakehead.

You should try to get it acclimated to living with dither fish; see if it'll accept smaller schooling tankmates similar to an mbu puffer or electric eel.
Not a bad idea! Find a school of something the Bowfin won't eat. Definitely a few options in the native fish world!
@@SCFishKeeping And if you're willing to go outside natives, perhaps some of the larger species of barbs, tetras, or even rainbowfish
@@SCFishKeeping I've had them before and as long as you keep some live crustaceans available they aren't usually very aggressive towards other fish. They greatly prefer live crustaceans and insect/midge larvae over fish.

I know this is late, but the Grizzly Grinnells. In Mississippi we refer to Bowfin as Grinnells....
I caught the mother bowfin threw her in the woods and netted all the babies and used them as bait. My biggest was 32"

@@SCFishKeeping I tried last summer on a lure. I think the key is fresh cut/live bait hopefully this year.
@@SCFishKeeping they are not hard to catch, if you are targeting them. They just inhabit a specific niche.
Warm slow moving weedy water, if there is a rocky shoal abutting it that is great. They don't tend to hit a fast bait , and I haven't gotten many on artificials.
They fight well, but don't have the violent strike of a Pike.

I could imagine that you would need stock tank/tub for every pair just for them to spawn and raise babies.
