  • Using the Aluminum Handle Adapter, I show you how to make a removable wood tool handle for Woodturning Tools.
    The Adapter with set screws is perfect for scrapers with rectangular tangs. One handle can be used for several tools, and gouges can be reversed into the handle to protect the edge for travel.
    Please take a moment to visit my website, www.cindydrozda.com for more information about my life, Artwork, Instructional Woodturning DVDs, Signature Turning Tools, and Woodturning Supplies.
    Aluminum Handle Adapters are available for online ordering here: www.cindydrozda.com/html/Handl...
    Questions and Comments are invited.
    Happy turning, everyone!

    Cindy, I discovered that the two smaller adapters used the same brad point twist drill size. I'm very happy with my new tool handles! Thank you so much, you rock

    Thank you Cindy. I just purchased your 10V Vortex tool, 1/4" Pyramid tool and 3/8" Finial Gouge. These are just what the doctor ordered.

    Hilda, that is a good question. The sizes to drill into the wood are 1/2" for the 1/4" and 3/8" adapters, and 5/8" for the 1/2" adapter. I used forstner bits, because that is what I had in the proper sizes. They are not the best, though they worked. The forstner tended to wander a bit. A brad point twist drill would drill a straighter hole using this method. The brad point or forstner will center up into the wood because they have a center point. A regular 118º point drill might wander off of center and drill oversize. If that is all you have, drilling an 1/8" pilot hole will help the larger drill to center.
    If you accidentally drilled a hole a little too big, you can fill it with JB weld (automotive epoxy), or epoxy with flocked cotton added to it (the best).

    Hilda, The depth of the hole needs to be 1-1/2" to accommodate the adapter. I sometimes drill deeper to allow for adjusting how much of the tool sticks out of the handle.

    great video Cindy, enjoyed the technique of drilling the blank using the tool rest to hold the square blank. never seen that before seemed to work really well.

    I love your brand, tools, tool adapters, beautiful boxes, finials and video production. Is there anything you don't do great?
    I've purchased a flat piece of carbide (1/16"t x 1/2"w x 12"L) steel to make my own thin parting tool.
    Question :
    Do you have any advise (thoughts) on adapting a flat piece of metal to your aluminum tool adapter?
    Thank you for your generous consideration and informative video's,
    Sincerely,
    Steph_Louisiana

      Hi Greg, I'm sorry that you didn't know about the handle adapters when you placed your order. I try to make it clear on the tool ordering page, but I could do better. Would you like to have had a note in the package with the tools about handle options? If you want to order adapters for the tools you ordered, I will refund the shipping cost, since you probably would have ordered them at the same time had you known.

    Cindy, what depth do you have set for the masking tape marker (e.g., how deep is the hole you drill?

  • @drhilda
    @drhilda 10 ปีที่แล้ว

    OK, I have another (probably stupid question), what are the sizes of the drill bits that you use for each of the adapters? My drilled hole was slightly too large for the 1/4", but I need all 3 sizes. Also, is it a particular drill bit you are using?

  • @jasonbyu75
    @jasonbyu75 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    No need for brass ferrules around the wood handle to keep the aluminum insert from splitting the wood? I'm assuming this is because the tool itself is not intended to be submitted to large impact forces? Or perhaps more based on actual experience that the brass ferrules are not needed for something like your 3/8" finial gouge (what I just purchased).

    i have a couple of questions regarding wood blanks 1 what is the difference between stabilized blanks and un-stabilized blanks 2.what are {worthless pen blanks) they look amazing and 3what are {Reincarnated Wood blanks} and 4 is stabilized wood better than regular wood 5 why do they stabilize wood.... i have looked all over and i cant find good answers .

    • @cindydrozda
      @cindydrozda  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      CJ, The simple answer is that stabilized blanks (or stabilized wood) refers to wood that has been vacuum impregnated with some kind of resin. The reason to stabilize wood is to make punky or soft wood usable, and/or to make wood as durable as plastic. Mostly for pens, but it is nice for jewelry and other items that get a lot of handling.
      Stabilized wood is only better than regular wood in that it will not wear down or take on a patina from handling. Also, stabilizing can be better if the wood was so rotten or soft that it would be impossible to turn without massive tearout. The stabilizing makes it turn like plastic.
      Stabilized wood is easy to turn, and easy to finish. It is basically plastic. It takes a fine polish and doesn't need any "finish" to look great.
      I have no idea what "worthless pen blanks" might be. Reincarnated, either.

    Does anyone know who Burt Rutan is?

      Great video Cindy. Who is Burt Rutan?

    • @cindydrozda
      @cindydrozda  10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      mike atkinson Burt Rutan is famous for designing the Voyager aircraft that made the first around the world flight without re-fueling. That was in 1988, I believe.
      He is also well known for designing the Long-EZ homebuilt (Experimental) aircraft. To perform well, his aircraft need to be kept lightweight. His quote "Take care of the ounces and the pounds will take care of themselves" is the credo of the glass airplane builders.

    What is the depth you drill?

    • @cindydrozda
      @cindydrozda  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      The depth should be at least 1.5" (one and one half inches) to fit the adapter. I usually drill deeper so I can adjust the length of the tool in the handle.

    Why does it cost $50 to ship these $15 adaptors to the UK? Obviously you just don't want to deal with turners in the UK. Do you realise that UK Customs and Excise charge 20% VAT not only on the $15 cost but also on the $50 shipping and handling charge. It really does price us out of the market.

    • @cindydrozda
      @cindydrozda  10 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      It would not cost you $50 to ship to the UK. The PayPal shipping calculator doesn't make it easy for me to get an accurate shipping cost for overseas. That is why I put the note on my website ordering pages suggesting that international customers contact me by email to get shipping costs. I will then weigh the package and send an invoice with the exact postage cost. I do not make money on shipping, but I try to offer the best prices to everyone and can't afford to lose money on shipping either. I always refund any amount charged by the shipping calculator that is above the actual cost to ship the item. It would really cost $9 to ship one handle adapter to the UK. It is more cost effective to ship more than one item, of course. I am very happy to deal with turners in the UK, but the truth of today's world is that postage costs make it impractical. It is exactly the same way when I buy something from the UK. I am sorry that you have the wrong idea of my intentions.
