    I could definitely hear the "fuzz type" character coming in, even early on the gain dial. Reminds me of a cranked brownface fender or jtm45 a bit. Some of the first tones you dialed in sound perfect for slide work to my ears. Great pedal! That Maxon ain't no slouch either.

    Indeed it has that quality of a CAE 3 or even OD100, to it. Wonder if it is because of the EL34s. Into a 6L6 amp I think it would sound completely different

    It's an SD9 copy machine and Jan Ray is also a Timmy copy machine. The first difference is the brass case. I agree that marketing is good.

      @BigHairyGuitars  ปีที่แล้ว +12

      “Copy” i know that’s the popular thing to say, but it’s not really any closer to an SD9 in sound, than a Tube Screamer is. And the JanRay sounds really good. Timmy sounds good. They sound similar… not the same? BUT if we asked someone on the street to hear the difference between a Soldano and a Matchless, they likely couldn’t, so we’re working in a very fine margin.

    Why do you use the Sm57, when you have the Soyuz? The 57 will add extra raspiness and harsh sound. I don’t own a Soyuz, but from the TH-cam clips, it sounds perfect on it’s own.

    Similar to the Maxon, but ‘sweeter.’ That 5% difference makes all the difference in the world. I had never wanted an SD9, but you’re selling me on the Vemuram. Maybe it’s that you’re using a Les Paul and most demos I’ve seen for SD9s are with Strats(?). Dang-now I want this, but I thought I was done buying pedals…. Wish I could play like that.

    While I am generally not a fan of uber-priced gain pedals, I preferred the sound of the Vemuram to the Ibanez....but would need to A/B them myself to see if I could hear, or feel anything that would make me say "OK, I'll spend on an uber-priced gain box".

    I have a Shanks Od which I think is quite similar, but this seems to have more gain. I like it a lot. But I saw the Budi G from Vemuram the other day and that seems like a more versatile pedal, the problem is finding one to try! And they are really expensive!

  • @janders3205
    @janders3205 ปีที่แล้ว

    Waiting for my butta’ machine but that’s one reason why I always went back to my SD-9, it’s kinda between a distortion and a fuzz. The unwound strings sound fatter with those types of pedals. My old ibanez sd-9 had a Keith Richard rhythm thing. The newer 9 series Maxons are fatter. Maybe my old Ibanez was a fluke. But I’ve been looking for an SD-9 like pedal without the issues…maybe better eq/tone control with a midrange control maybe???

  • @tacdoc8736
    @tacdoc8736 ปีที่แล้ว +7

    Solid review, nice comparisons, and great playing as usual. They look slick, but even if it is 5%... which is debatable at best, it simply isn't worth that absurd markup for a clone of an SD9. I know, I know... "it's tweaked" or modified.... allegedly. They said that about the Jan Ray and that was an objective lie. The Jan Ray is a part for part exact clone of the Timmy, with the only difference being that the pots turn in different directions... for an absurd premium. I've A/Bd them, seen the inside, and the schematic is identical. It doesn't sound better and they stole the circuit. It's not an homage. It's an exact clone. Maybe this one actually has minor tweaks, & maybe it doesn't, but putting a pretty enclosure on someone else's pedal doesn't make it worth a cent more to an overwhelming majority of players without skin in the game. Now the guy who drops $400 for a clone, and the guy getting a percentage off of Vemuram using his endorsement to sell them... sure. It probably matters to them. Ultimately folks have the prerogative to spend money however they please, including on magical unicorn tears in a box to put on a pedalboard.

    • @nickh1933
      @nickh1933 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Solid points, that said I have never gotten a Timmy to sound like the Jan Ray I have into my Suhr Bella. The Jan Ray has a slicker silkier tone.

    • @Christocalese
      @Christocalese ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I’ve had 2 Timmys and a Tim… I spent a lot of time A/B-ing my Timmy with a Jan Ray trying to match it. I wanted keep the Timmy to flip the Jan Ray for something else. The Jan Ray just sounded better, it’s punchier and smoother. I also tried a King Tone Blues power. It comes close, but it has some mids that can’t be dialed out. Works great with a Strat. But the Jan Ray and Shanks ODS-1 sound great with all of my guitars: Les Paul, Strat, Tele, and Jazzmaster.

    • @Musicsports
      @Musicsports ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The Timmy is more expensive than the Jan Ray, so what is the issue? No we aren't discussing the MXR variant. Talking about the hand made pedals. The Landeau sounds so much fuller than the Maxon SD9. Grittier, more responsive. Definitely worth the price if you are a serious musician.

    • @tacdoc8736
      @tacdoc8736 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Musicsports, say you aren’t a serious musician, without actually saying it…
      On no planet is the actual Timmy more expensive than these snake oil pedals. You must not be familiar with Reverb or Paul C Cochrane. The Vemuram Jan Ray cost $175 more than the actual Timmy V3 that it rips off.
