Exploring a Cool Large Abandoned House in Whitby, Ontario

  • This is another house I have passed so many times in the last several years, and one day...boom! it was abandoned! It appears it has been REALLY abandoned. After watching the footage I am forced to critique myself and say that some of the footage seemed rushed, so in advance, I apologize.
A very large farmhouse that has likely been sitting in this same spot for close to 90 years based on the brick work and architecture. I tried to look up info based on the address and some interior evidence, but didn't have any luck..so if any of you sleuths find anything, PLEASE let me know and I will post in the description.
I loved this house because it was so large..room after room it seemed to go on forever. A lot of artifacts left behind, especially writing on the walls the give an idea of who lived here, which is great. Other more tangible artifacts were found throughout the house, which again, add to the history of previous occupants. This house has 2 of my favorite features, first is the dual staircase and second is the loft.
This house sits kinds close to the 407 build, but, its not close enough, so the abandonment is a mystery to me..maybe land value alone could be the deciding factor in the fate of this dwelling.
    Another great explore!!!

You're my favorite explorer because u don't talk, u get in, u make sure we see everything thoroughly, and and u get out. The silence makes u the best. please don't ever change that.
this house is awesome. I'd live there. It needs some TLC and new things, but all in all its really cool. Great find. Thanks :)

Such a beautiful old place. Irregular walls, hidey holes, ornate decor - on a regular home. They don’t build homes like this anymore, n haven’t for awhile. This is a lost art

My ggrandfathers brother James Gibson Kerr (wife and family too) immigrated to and lived on Twin Stream Farm from 1923. I arrived in Toronto in 1990 and was fortunate to stay for 2 days on the farm with one of the last of 13 children but never had a camera. I believe it is now long gone but I will forever have memories of my time there.

When I look at that food it really gets me that none of it appears to be spoiled...preserved forever...!! What kind of chemicals are we putting into our bodies...yuck!! The cheese is still orange and looks like they just bought it...yet there is mold all over the inside of the fridge...so scary!! Good video...thanks!!

This is a new favourite of mine. I love this house! It's so spacious and beautiful. Some of the floors and wallpaper are original. I also liked that old button switch and also how some of the plugs only had two prongs instead of three. That's old. Not to mention the attic. What an amazing attic. It is all done up with a perfect shape and beautiful floors. They don't make houses like this anymore. If it was abandoned due to expropriation, I am gonna seriously destroy something!

Really enjoyed watching this one - thank you for sharing. Nice that it hasn't been trashed (yet). Great filming and it didn't seem rushed at all.
OMG! that fly paper - I remember walking into one of those years ago, and trying to untangle it - not nice.
It's strange the things people leave behind - random furniture, the computer - and how weird - that fridge with all the stuff on the shelf.
    - Glad to see the freezer was empty!
It would be interesting to find out the history of this house.

The cement walls behind the water heaters, look to be the remnants of an old cistern...a large cement box that stored rainwater for use in the house...these were common in old farm homes. My grandmother's house had a cistern...it was open on top and I could see the water if I stood on a stool. They had a well and the pump could also draw from the cistern.

  • @jehugo66

Pretty clean. The creepy green wallpapered attic loft is a time capsule. In 1800s arsenic was used to get those bright greens-people died.

  • @gabbyg561

It hasn't been abandoned that long. Perhaps 10 years or so. The exp. date on the condiments would have been the biggest clue. I recognize several quite popular
products. The door off the utility room is a popular kitchen door that can be bought at Lowe's or Home Depot, in the States.
The carpeting on the stairs is still in great shape, and looks to be not that old. The walls look pretty good, the wood trim and the stairway railing is still gorgeous. The light switch looks to be from around the 1920's or 30's. It's a good thing vandals have stayed away pretty much. Too bad it won't or can't be fixed be up. What a darling house, that was probably built in the late 1800's.

Yet another example of a very nice house going to waste, in my opinion it's not too far gone to be salvaged the roof still looks in decent condition, didn't notice any leaks when you were in the attic, also it appears the scrappers haven't moved in yet, that could be due to low scrap prices.
Also in my opinion it looks like it was an older couple that possibly lived there due to the few furniture items that were left behind and the decor.

    • @alibabafurball
      @alibabafurball 9 ปีที่แล้ว

+redneckbryon The roof is in poor state. The rain gutter is full of vines that have carried water into the house under the drip edge and is evidenced on several places in the house on the plaster walls that back to the outside.

What an incredible find! Guess when you see an old house still lived in, it pays to keep checking back! Really glad you did as I'm sure you'd probably agree this will go down as a very memorable explore.
Definitely no shoddy workmanship when they put this one together. Ad for why it was abandoned, maybe the list of needed repairs came to a point where it was deemed a money pit and they bailed. You could tell somebody was replacing certain things around there over there years and then just seemed to have drawn a line and said "that's it." Then again, who knows what happened.
I saw no problem with your camera work, thought it was great as always. Thanks for the great explore, Daadeeoh!

I agree on the attic/loft area and double staircase. Imagine the fun kids would have playing chase or hide and go seek in this house. Too bad some of trim seems to be missing, as well as what looked like cheap replacement windows. The nob and tube wiring that went with that push button light switch usually has to be replaced as it can so easily start a fire. Expensive to fix too, but it looks like they had done some of it. All in all though, I loved the house.

Hi Daadeeoh! This is another superb find! This place is an absolute puzzle to me to as well! If it's not that close to the 407, I wondered what happened to this place?! Maybe it's doomed for the wrecking ball! Maybe not! Do you think it could be a future avenue for more subdivisions, townhouses or condos? There's a rumor of a 150 acre mall going in around that area. Gossip amongst my real estate friends! The house seems structurally sound. Beautiful exterior brickwork. That fly tape as you entered the building was a tad nasty. And brick in a bathroom? No accounting for people's tastes! They must have had a large family. You can see the progression of the children's growth as evidenced on that wall. I did that to with my boys! Something to remember the past by! I wonder where that piece of historical wood came from with the date 1870 on it? The dual staircase is amazing. The pushbutton lights switches! This definitely dates the house back to yesteryear! So cool! That old heat register wall grate on the 3rd floor was a beautiful piece of artwork in itself. OMG just amazing! Thank you Daadeeoh once again for a wonderfully documented video with historical significance! What a nice treat!

Thanks Licks!! A mall would explain it for sure, (like we need more malls)
I loved the outside architecture, and was very surprised on the size on the inside. And as you know by now, dual staircases, are my favorite feature in any house I explore. I am surprised I do not run into more knob and tube switches , so many have been converted. I have lots of vids to come, so please come on back!

I bet those old houses were quite the gem back in their day. Good solid bones to those houses. Enjoyed watching a few of your video's. I'm from the US and seeing these videos makes it all the more interesting.
Some of those condements still looks pretty yummy along with that cheese.
This video did seem rushed and kinda made me dizzy compared to other video's of yours.
What was the hole in the ground in the basement for?

What a beautiful old house/home!! It was a pleasure to watch your awesome video and see that vandals had not done their dirty work on it!!! I hope it stays that way!!! It appeared to still be in pretty good condition. The wood work was beautiful! It needs a new family to move in and fix it up. Hope that happens!! I don't think your footage was rushed at all. I did want you to try a little harder to get the door open on the weird room in the basement, lol. Were you able to tell what it was maybe used for when you looked inside? It just looked creepy to me. Enjoyed this one very much and thank you for sharing!! Take Care!!! :)

That is a very unique stairway with double access to the landing going up. Next time take your time and don't pan around as fast. Everything is like watching a 1980's much music veejay through glasses like bubbles wears lol. When you opened the vent you could have exposed yourself to asbestos. I was near there at the beginning of the month and saw a house being reused at the new 404 off ramp(I think) at ravenshoe. The ramp isn't built yet, but the house build is going good on nice foundation work I saw at a glance. The fast growing vines are going to kill that house quick and already fill the rain gutters. They take hold there and work under the roof's drip edge and let rain in the house. Specifically if the rain down spout can't drain due to the roots of the vines sucking water up there. It only takes 3 grow seasons for that to happen once it is at the gutter. It looks like old folks lived there and that is the grand children's height. Can't imagine a couple with that many kids these days. The rooms don't show that many kids have lived there. I bet there is a legal battle over the house between the children of the occupants that had all them kids. The executor looking after mom and dad getting sued by the others siblings. I seen many houses go like that. They get legal advise and the lawyer does their best to help their client, right? Can't help you on the property right now I am busy with 3 projects. It would be easier for me to look up the carved name if I knew it was local and not recycled from the 80's It was popular then just as barn board recrooms lol. I still have to send tikitrex that picture of Foisey house in Ottawa. The front of the house was done in zinc and is suspended 20 feet up on a modern wall. Looks neat and the best siding I have ever seen. Sure beats that fake brick look stuff eh! Looks like a gingerbread house. Good video Daadeeooh

9:35 the Nat Geographic underneath the one with diver on the cover is a March 1984 issue with holographic image of an eagle. It was pioneering use of holograms in a large-circulation magazine. I sold mine for $50 in 2000. They are worth about $10 now as so many are floating around.
This issue is regarded as a "Milestone" issue. If you were a geek back then, this issue was a huge deal.

This is quite strange, it seems there are some things there that were recently bought, but it looks like it has been abandoned for ages, when you look at the wall, it seems that the names could be names of the kids that lived there, and how they grew. It seems the last time it was written on was 2007. I saw a lot of insurance checks scattered around the house. They must have gone through a lot of things which may have caused them to abandon the house.
Also, the scooby-doo books you came across were made in 2006-2007. Just a cool little fact.

Big guts for opening the fridge and not making a sound. That had to be hard. As I saw the date on the mantal and the oddly shapped extra rooms. I think this house might have been used to hide slaves or even jews. There apeared to be several stoves. The 2 water heaters. How they hid that one room. Just the basement. The addition of that non-original stairway to exit the back door. Great work. This house I think played a major role in history. You are lucky to have found it and been in it. Happy house hunting.

I'd gut the place and make an open concept. Looks like the non-artisan well water got 'em, or the condiments. The birdcage was fitting. I did not get creeped out e except for the rooms were like cages, and maybe the heater amd wiring in the bathroom... and was that a gas tank near the electrical panel? Wonders what they were thinking (or not thinking). Great land, got a fresh air Ahh moment when we got outside. Woodwork looks Arts and Crafts! Hoping you have permission, I farmers can get mighty peeved (to say the least) about trespassing!
