We had an HP LaserJet 4 Printer at the high school I went to, it was on the network so that all the computers in the computer room could print to it, but I don't know if the printer had a network card inside it or whether it was connected to a print server. The school had several HP print servers, little boxes with flashing lights and parallel ports and LAN ports on them because we also had a few colour inkjet printers throughout the school, I can't remember whether the print servers were called JetDirect or JetStream. If you could buy the AppleTalk upgrade card and install it yourself into the printer after you'd already bought it, could it be that HP included the "m" sticker in the box with the card? Was the card only available to customers when purchasing the printer?

Wondering if maybe you can assist. My 4m failed after many years of use. I came back to the office after the weekend, powered it on, no self test/start up sequence, no display on the screen. The on line and form feed lights are on. Also, it’s making a very faint buzzing sound coming from the drive line area.
I’ve tried everything, with the exception of replacing parts. Nothing seemingly needs replaced (no broken gears, etc). Maybe some sort of board failure? Any ideas? Is there something I can replace just to test?

I have a feeling that back cover was replaced with one from a regular 4.

@@mikemoyercell They should be identical, no?

I have one in storage somewhere not operated since 2010 I guess. In your opinion would you recommend trying to dust/clean it off and try to make it work? Worth the money over buying a all-in-one? I've no idea how much money I would have to put into make this work if it isn't. First would be acquiring a new toner cartridge which seems costly.

If the printer already works, then new-old stock toner cartridges are cheap on eBay, and last for years. But if your other choice is an all-in-one, then presumably that means you want the extra features of an all-in-one, so you might as well buy the all-in-one, since this printer isn't going to provide those features.

I don't really need the all in one features but the thing is I am not from US and the toner cartridges here are about $50-$60 and a good all in ones here ins $80+. My print requirement is quite low about 15-20pages a month.

One more query can these cartridges be refilled or something? I have 2-3 of those toner cartridges lying around with the printer.

I don't think so; I've never heard of anyone refilling those particular cartridges. They're really well sealed.

Great. Too bad that only way is to replace the cartridges and not get them somehow refilled or something. Next weekend or so I will brush it off, clean it off and try to fire it up and see how it goes. Hope it works.

Greetings, friend I have a little problem with the printer, when I turn it on, I get the screen "57 service" does not grab any buttons, which is done in that case ?.

Error 57 is a main motor failure.
Just an FYI, Google is your friend. You would have found that answer very quickly. You'll also find what part needs to be replaced to fix the error.

The back door might have been replaced with a regular LJ4 back door so you have the regular model number on it

+Florian amRechner Or HP put the wrong sticker on the back by mistake when the printer was made.

I am looking for a driver. Please help. I would like to install this on windows 7.

You don't need a driver - Windows will install it automatically.

On my last computer with Windows & Pro, I had to install using a link I did not save. That computer crashed and I had to get a new one with same operating system.

    • @themaritimegirl
      @themaritimegirl  7 ปีที่แล้ว

Yeah you don't need to do that at all. If it didn't install automatically with the printer connected, then go to Start > Devices an Printers, and in that window click Add a printer. In the following dialog box click Use an existing port, and choose LPT1 from the menu. From there I don't know what the steps are since mine is already installed, but it should either find it automatically or prompt you to choose it from a list.
