The Pozzo (well) was built by architect-engineer Antonio da Sangallo between 1527 and 1537 at the behest of Pope Clement VII to insure the city's water supply in case of a siege. He took refuge at Orvieto when Rome was sacked (1527). Around the central well shaft are two spiral ramps in a double helix. Mules carried empty vessels down and full water vessels up. The well is 174 ft deep, diameter is 43 ft. There are 248 steps.
