      Typically a blouse is not as closely fitted as a skirt, so you may not need double darts, unless you want a body hugging blouse.

      In the Dress/Blouse Sloper video I demonstrate how to rotate the dart from the back armhole to the shoulder. It can also be rotated to the neck. You can also simply leave the dart out when drafting the back armhole, but the fit will not be as good.

    Hello Chris, how can I draft a princess seams with this method?

  • @paul-oram
    @paul-oram 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Busy building my own set of slopers (just fitted the top sloper on my wife - fits beautifully!). Now creating the skirt sections - If I want to keep the top and skirt as two separate sections when creating a dress, can I keep the curves in the waist, further I should of course align the darts, but can I have a narrower dart on the front top to match the narrower dart on the front skirt? ie the aligned waist darts on the back remain wider than the ones on the front.

    • @christophersartorial7671
      @christophersartorial7671  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      For a shirtwaist dress (one with a waist seam), the side of the bodice can be slightly curved toward the waist, but can be straight as well. As you said, the bodice waist darts should line up with the skirt darts, but the dart widths do not have to match. Yes, the back waist darts are typically deeper than the front.

      @@christophersartorial7671 So I just wanted to end this conversation by saying that, I proceeded to meticulously grade this sloper from EU 34 to 50. Yesterday we had a test fitting with a person at size 48. It fitted beautifully - she loved the fit. I did everything in Adobe Illustrator - this will now become a master template to add all sorts of options, ive already added the princess lines. Next a few necklines. My wife is a fashion designer, myself a graphic designer, but this is the first time I have ever drawn a pattern from scratch - and Ive discovered that I really enjoy doing it. • @christophersartorial7671
      @christophersartorial7671  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      It is going to be a large dart. I'm not sure what you mean by "fluffy". How far from the apex point did you stop the dart? You may want to keep the dart at the side seam. The fabric you are using may also be contributing to the fluffiness.

    • @christophersartorial7671
      @christophersartorial7671  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I may get around to demonstrating how to take a design and develop it from your slopers. First, I would need to see your sketch, as your description is a little vague. It may simply be a matter of cutting your blouse sloper to the desired length, and drafting a rectangular skirt pattern that gathers into the seam. Good luck with that project.

    • @christophersartorial7671

      You can draft a blouse/dress sloper with double darts. This would be for a very fitted blouse or sheath dress. You may want to rotate the bust dart to the armhole or shoulder. Double darts at the waist don't work well with a bust dart at the side.

      For a dress with a waist seam you only need to check that the waist seam of the bodice and skirt match in length and dart placement. You may need to shift the skirt waist darts to line up with the bodice waist darts.

      The only advice I would give you is never, ever try to do without bust darts or construction that would serve the same function, such as princess seams, tucks, or spot shirring. A top or dress designed without them, will never fit you properly. Even stretch fabrics or knits will fit you better with a bust dart.

    • @christophersartorial7671

      A dimple at the end of a dart can be due to sewing. Try running the last few stitches right along the fold edge before chaining off or back stitching. The bust dart can be kept at the side.

    Why do we move the armhole dart on the back bodice piece to the shoulder?

      Generally a shoulder dart is not located at the armhole. I draft it there because it makes drafting and correcting the shoulder much easier. You can leave the dart in the shoulder for your sloper as I do, then rotate it to the shoulder seam or neck depending on the style your making. Leave it at the armhole when designing a back yoke seam.

      Christopher Sartorial ah okay. That makes sense. Thank you! Really love your videos, by the way!

    Hi can I know if I can add sleeves to this dress pattern .

      Yes, a sleeve can be added. In another video I demonstrate drafting a sleeve sloper.

    I would really, really like to see him do this stuff on a real woman like me - short, stout, DD, broad droopy shoulders, and middle aged. In fact, I will volunteer! 🙄

    An easier method which I teach my students is draping a waist bodice block on a dummy then they transfer those draping skills into draping on an actual human body.i teach them to extend the waistblock down to hip level which is approx 7-9 inches (depending on height of customers)Then extend darts .Dress length and width then is then drawn in depending on design and variations. This I find the easiest way especially for beginners.. student can then convert darts into princess lines as a variation..
    Your way is a traditional way of marrying a bodice block with a skirt block which I find too long winded as you would need to draft a skirt block..
    Also I find it easier to draft with bust shoulder darts in for front and shoulder dart in for back .Why have you not done this on your blocks.. I only move or get rid of my shoulder darts if I'm doing design variations.

      Hi Jojo. When I was beginning, I did a lot of draping, and it's good to start students that way. They get a feel for how fabric envelopes the body. Most hobbyists don't have dress forms though, and if they've followed my videos, they should already have a bodice and skirt sloper to work with.

      I draft darts initially away from the shoulder. This allows for easier adjustment of the shoulder width and slope after a first fitting. Then the darts can be rotated to the shoulder if desired.

      Thanks for your reply Christopher.
      I do encourage my students to buy a dummy if they are serious about dressmaking..
      You can pick up cheap second hand shop dummies for £15 in England...
      You do need a form anyway for checking balance and fit of any patterns...It's the fittings that create a good pattern

      @@jojoremeny I bought my first dress form direct from a manufacturer. It was expensive. Years later I was given 3 more from a former employer who owed me money.

      @@christophersartorial7671 yes professional dress form dummies are expensive but you can buy shop display dummies for very little which is good for beginnings students..
