I grew up being gay with a homophobic aunt, but she wasn’t a congresswoman, and I didn’t get people like Ana or Cenk to reach out and speak up for me. Thank you TYT.
You can really relate to this young man then. It must be very difficult to have a close family member choose to not understand you. I think most people on this page would be supportive of you versus your aunt. Hugs. ❤

I'm a 50 year old, British, straight, white, cisgender male. Do I understand everything about the LGBTQ community? No. Does anything that people in that community do threaten me in any way? No. Why are so many people so judgemental and nasty towards others, and how can anyone say anything negative about this guy? He seems like one of the nicest people you could meet, and should be able to live his life the way he wants to, as should everyone.

@tripnick5555 You are 1000% right. I know not all religious people are hateful. I hope most at least. That said, I believe people to be brainwashed into thinking it's ok to prevent others from having equal rights because God said so. These people think they have to get involved because they're doing God's work. They feel it's their duty. Then you have some that are literally hiding behind the religion, as said in the interview, just to be hateful. I can't know for sure why people are like this, but I think it's possible that it's as simple as some people are so hateful they need and want to control others.

Andrew I am proud of you. I cannot imagine my aunt hating me for being born with cerebral palsy and a stutter. Certain family members wanted to work the stutter and CP out of me. My aunt loved me for me and still loves me.

Very smart, bright, knows in what he believes and gorgeous. What else do you need? We need more people like him, intelligent and not self centered. Yes, bring him to talk more about his work...I hope he becomes a candidate in the future cause, we need more people like him, not ashamed of what he is and and who fights against homophobia that is growing in this country.

Awesome move inviting Andrew Hartzler on the show to speak his truth! Kinda wish you let him speak more and provided the opportunity to unpack what must be a difficult situation for him personally rather than bagging on his aunt while he listened on quietly looking sheepish and uncomfortable. Not that the congresswoman doesn't deserve to be bagged on but please don't both interrupt him and give him a chance to speak. Love the show many kudos to Cenk and Ana for getting it right 99% of the time!
Wow. I wasn't actually expecting to tear up at the end. I hope Andrew Hartzler has happiness throughout his life. He was wronged with all the conversion "therapy" that was forced on him as a kid and I would think that sort of thing would have made him very angry and bitter. But he has instead shown remarkable resilience.

Our child came out as lesbian. It took her brothers/dad a bit to handle it, and they still have occasional biases show up that have to be ripped out. I love my child regardless, as I could care less about who she is with, so long as that person is right for her. I can't believe how many people throw their children out.
I want to send good wishes out to all the gay people who may not have welcoming families. I hope you find comfort and cheer over the holiday season! ❤

I went through "conversion therapy" in the 90s through the evangelical "Exodus" ex gay program. The darkest period of my life. What Andrew says about these "therapies" making you hate yourself us absolutely true. It stole at least twenty years of my life, living in this dichotomy of hating an integral part of my being and believing I was a broken, intrinsically sinful and evil person. I was told I had to have been molested as a child, even though I had no recollection of such. It was really really dumb. Religion has stolen decades of joy from my life. If I could sue, I would.

Things like this happened to me too and the only truth is that along with the abuse, we were robbed of love and kindness. It is so impossible to forget the pain. Hope you have found ways to cope. Hugs!

There are literally millions of us out here who appreciate any and all coverage that exposes the sheer hypocrisy and self-righteous ignorance of the religiously indoctrinated! Hard to believe that so many people are still in the clutches of any organized cult whose God not only approves of hating and discriminating against ALL others who don't conform, but also directs them to commit acts of violence towards whoever is deemed "other" or "different" or "enemy!" I love this guy. What a sweetie. I hope his aunt figures out that being gay is not a choice. It’s tough having family who hasn’t figured that out. It’s painful when a family doesn’t accept you for who you are. I loved learning about his activism. It’s too bad he didn’t go to a more accepting school. Grateful he is making a difference. It took so much courage and strength to survive conversion therapy and have family publicly. I can see he totally loves his aunt. That love will hopefully change and help her understand. He was so kind to stick up for his aunt when Ana slammed her. Ana speaks the truth but his aunt is preaching hate.
Looks like he found a much larger, loving family in TYT.
I had a friend who went through these tortures because of his parents and church. He wouldn't tell me much, but said the worse was when they would make them watch gay adult movies, and if there was a reaction, electrodes that were attached to intimate areas would be used to "teach" with the fear pain response. It's absolutely horrible what people are put through.
And this is why I will happily drop people when it comes to disagreements on human rights.

But the man who will taking her seat in the House, is as bad, if not worse than her. I live in the very northern part of her district. And gerrymandering during her first term stuck me in her district. Basically she's a despicable evil excuse for a human being, but the majority of people in her district think the way she does. I'm sure he knows this state well enough to know a gay man, sadly, would be unlikely to get many votes here. People around his age, and younger, might support him, but a lot of them won't even go out and vote. 😥

you'd be surprise how much harder it was for folks like Julia Sweeny to come out as an atheist. listen to her talks called "Letting Go of God", it's a helluva story to follow, and despite my never having that problem growing up (was born and raised secular by my UCSD-graduate parents), he journey is inspiring in many other avenues :3

Vicky may well have been brainwashed as a child into believing that homosexuality is amoral however she is no longer a child. As an adult and as an aunt the onus is on her to be a decent human being who puts family above politics. I'm currently spending my Christmas vacation with my half brothers and their father whom is a Republican, a Trump supporter, believes in God, knows full well that I am bisexual and is still more than happy to host me for several weeks during the holidays. We may not see eye to eye on all issues but we care deeply for each other and recognize that is more important than anything else. This woman needs to follow that example.
Im straight and i once shared a house in houston tx with a german board game fanatic, a Celtic folk singer and a pre-op transexual. Man that was a fun house. People need to chill and realize we're all people

And my housemates ranged in age from early twenties to older than me...and it just didn't matter, because we ARE all people. I saw the interview with this wonderful young man the other day . Glad you had the opportunity to interview him as well. My wife and I just loved that interview as well....also , that outed so to speak this family member so powerfully set to right so to speak his aunt's preposterous display on the house floor .. as the brother of a gay brother ( now deceased ) who had come out many decades ago, I wish he was here to watch this . Our family was supportive from the beginning ,but so many of my brothers friends were cut off from their families... Very painful ... What a bright articulate kid .... I can't even imagine what he went through and emerged heroic ...
She must be loads of fun at family holiday parties.
When my niece came out to me as trans, I told her I was fine with that. I admitted that it would take some time for me to recalibrate, and no I didn't understand (since I am not trans), but that I wanted her to live the way that makes her happy because that's what I care about most. Her feeling as comfortable and content as she can in her own body and in her own life matters to me because I love her.

I am Greek first generation, the shame my family felt, I never went to family gatherings always excluded it was super hurtful in my life....I had to figure out my own life without them...
When I came out as trans at 4 my mother told my the devil was speaking through me. Spent most of my life thinking I was worthless and would never amount to much. I seriously thought all my future would hold was to be a sex worker. Once I left my family behind I served my country, was a nurse, and have about 7 years of suicide prevention under my belt. Sometimes we do better without out families.
