I think it's stupid actually. If the real Mandarin was truly feared, why would he let Trevor live? Not killing him actually still makes a mockery of the Mandarin character, because ANYONE mocking him would instantly be executed. It feels badly written, and just a poor excuse to have Ben Kingsley back.

And this American reporter, who's actually a member of the terrorist group, The Ten Rings...breaks Trevor out of jail to meet the one who he's been pretending to be. My personal opinion is that The Mandarin is going to be this mystical being, that manifests itself with whoever has possession of the Rings. I think somehow Trevor is going to end up with them, whether he volunteers or is forced. I just don't see them casting Ben Kingsley for just the role of Trevor. So in the end he will end up being the Mandarin. One things for sure... that Marvel One Shot definitely suggests The Mandarin in some form in Iron Man 4.

It's not like all of the magic would have been only added to the MCU in Doctor Strange, a movie released three years after Iron Man 3, since the Thor movies already had plenty of magic. And the Mandarin gains his powers from his 10 magic rings. As a result, Tony Stark never had a nemesis in any of the MCU movies. Aldrich Killian was just a random science villain, leader of AIM and that's a random revolving door role even in the comics. But yeah, at least it was a one time thing where subverted expectations were used sparingly instead of using them at every possible turn as a gimmick of the movie. It worked better for the movie than it did in Star Wars.

The Mandarin is Iron-man's biggest and most iconic villain. Imagine a Batman movie where the Joker isn't really the Joker and is just an actor that's playing a role and is a weak puppet of some new random person. That's what happened in this movie and that's why people hated the twist.

The Mandarin is C-level in popularity because pre-2008, no one (outside of hardcore comic fans) had heard of Iron Man, so him being the archnemesis of Iron Man, doesn't really put him in the same level (for example) as Joker, Magneto or Lex Luthor. Those 3 are A-level popular villains. Iron Man 3 didnt at all boost the Mandarin's popularity, because, as you said, that wasn't the Mandarin. B-level popular characters would probably be characters like The Riddler, the Guardians of the Galaxy (they're pretty hot right now, but not yet A-level), Winter Soldier (again, popular right now, not A-level yet, but more appearances in movies will help). No insult to him in any way, but the Mandarin is a C-level character. Just ask any person on the street if they know who the Mandarin is. You'll be lucky if three out of ten people will know. Just an observation of mine, you can battle me with counter evidence if you'd like.
It was a brilliant twist that made perfect sense. What got me was the Mandorin was such a good and captivating villain so the real villain hiding behind him needed to be even better and he wasn't.

If you watch the full short, Slattery has an interview with a guy supposedly is making a documentary on him, but the interviewer then reveals his identity as an agent of the real Mandarin. His objective is to take Slattery to his boss where I guess he going to recieve punishment for falsely using his name. All in all, this actually ties in pretty well.
I really hope that when Shang-Chi and the Ten Rings comes out, Ben Kingsley is in it, even for a 5 minute scene. Maybe the real mandarin comes after him for pretending to be him.
It would have worked if the idiots that reviewed the movie didn't spoil it before hand. There were tons of articles citing Kingsley wasn't the mandrian but an actor and it killed the twist right then and there.
Ben Kingsley was the perfect casting, I just wish they would have made him the actual Mandarin, he had the look, the voice, the imposing presence, and even some dark humor just to lighten it up in a villainous way. God they did everything they could to miss the target on this one.

"You'll never see me coming", could this mean that the real mandarin is only hiding within/fighting for control of Trevor's body? This could be true and mean that the mandarin is on his way.
I just like the fact everyone was so disappointed with Aldrich Killian claiming to be the Mandarin and the bizzaro "ten rings don't exist" conclusion that first Marvel gives a cheeky nod to the disapproval in this short and now will fully give the Mandarin his dues in Shang Chi. Hopefully it doesn't become a scapegoat for anti-china viewpoints in the current climate.
@@OriginalRAB A couple of thoughts. First, as I remember hearing, the Chinese govt threatened to not allow iron Man 3 to be released in China if the comic book version of the Mandarin was used. But to me, this complaint on their part seems a little silly because as I recall, the comic book Mandarin was anti-Communist, pro-old Imperial China. And thus that version of the Mandarin would seem like an acceptable villain to China, unless the idea of ANY Chinese villain was unacceptable. Secondly, I think that having Ben Kingsley as the MCU Mandarin would have been an interesting compromise. After all, prior to the big reveal, his Mandarin seems pretty damned menacing. And honestly, having Killian as the mandarin was a massive let-down.

If you watch the full short, Slattery has an interview with a guy supposedly is making a documentary on him, but the interviewer then reveals his identity as an agent of the real Mandarin. His objective is to take Slattery to his boss where I guess he going to recieve punishment for falsely using his name. All in all, this actually ties in pretty well.

Ben Kingsley was the perfect casting, I just wish they would have made him the actual Mandarin, he had the look, the voice, the imposing presence, and even some dark humor just to lighten it up in a villainous way. God they did everything they could to miss the target on this one.

I just like the fact everyone was so disappointed with Aldrich Killian claiming to be the Mandarin and the bizzaro "ten rings don't exist" conclusion that first Marvel gives a cheeky nod to the disapproval in this short and now will fully give the Mandarin his dues in Shang Chi. Hopefully it doesn't become a scapegoat for anti-china viewpoints in the current climate.

First, as I remember hearing, the Chinese govt threatened to not allow iron Man 3 to be released in China if the comic book version of the Mandarin was used. But to me, this complaint on their part seems a little silly because as I recall, the comic book Mandarin was anti-Communist, pro-old Imperial China. And thus that version of the Mandarin would seem like an acceptable villain to China, unless the idea of ANY Chinese villain was unacceptable.
Secondly, I think that having Ben Kingsley as the MCU Mandarin would have been an interesting compromise. After all, prior to the big reveal, his Mandarin seems pretty damned menacing. And honestly, having Killian as the mandarin was a massive let-down.
