Stihl TS400 Wont Start Cut Off Saw Rebuild / Service - Piston Replacement [Will it RUN]

- Picked up this Stihl TS400 Cut Off Saw from a garage clear, looks to have water damage. The engine is now seized, now the Stihl TS400 Wont Start. Can we take this junk Stihl TS400 cut of saw and rebuild it, with new parts and get this cut off saw working once again.

I have 3 of these saws , none of them run. I been a drag racer all my life and have built many engines but these saws are aggravating. Thanks for the video , I'm going to use it to see if I can get at least one of these running 👍👍
This is an excellent video, very well shot and explained. Now I'm looking for ward to reassembling an old TS400 that has a badly scored piston.
I recommend DIESEL .
I bought a Honda 5hp engine , it had been left outside with no fuel cap on it , over the years fuel evaporates , water was in the carb and piston area ,. I took sparkplug out filled piston with red diesel over night . Next day stilsons on shaft , slightly turning did this for 5 min , re diesel piston , next day fully turning . Put a new carburator on it , drained oil , new plug , fired up 3rd pull .

The clutch drum is on the wrong way round..it needs the starter cup removing and clutch drum fitted the correct way round. it will bind up the way it is.
Great clear video but you missed to replace all the bearings and oil seals
Hello, they seemed ok at the time, wanted to get the machine running again for as cheap as possible, if it was in much better condition, would have spent more on it

Hi nice informative video , my ts400 has just stopped working the pull chord seemed jammed .
After watching your clip I’ve stripped it down and found that 1 of the piston rings had broke and scratched the piston and pot I’ve ordered new ones and waiting to fit them.
Any idea what would cause this?
Hi, thank you for the comment, could be a few things, overheating is common, poor lubrication = friction = heat. Rings are brittle, if the correct fuel/oil mix is not used, this could break rigs. Has it been sat for a few years and sized, pulling the chord may have broke the rings (had that happen before) maybe just worn down from use. You dont the correct thing in getting a new pot and piston - ensure your carb is set up correctly also, not too lean.
Always melt the end of the cord otherwise the knot can come undone.
I purchased this cord for this saw, I think it came with the ends melted if I recall - but very good tip 👍

Hello, thanks for comment, glad you enjoyed it. Not done any vids on carbs tuning, lots on TH-cam, set to default settings and work from there. Think I paid around £100 for the ultrasonic cleaner, done a few videos on this cleaner - great bit of kit.

So im tryin to fix my ts400. filled it up and next day there was quite a bad leak any idea, cuz it wasnt touched since it was filled 😅.
Hello, guessing fuel leaked out, if it was stored on its base and leaked, i would check out fuel tank, could be cracked, if it was on its side, seal on filler cap/fuel hose maybe.
For anyone watching this video the crankshaft bearings were gone on this saw it wont stay going for very long

Thanks for the support 👍 I would like to do real time videos however that would be hrs long 🤔I have got a blade to install, will be using it this spring when I get round to laying my new drive way. Think it needs a new clutch so may do a video on that. Good luck on the rebuild

You can slow the speed down of utube videos... Think its top right three buttons (utube it if not? Lol) ... slows audio down obvs but can be handy...
Hi hopefully you can help me out I have a ts420 it starts one time and runs really rough and when I try to start again it won't start and I checked the spark plug and it's full of fuel??
I would start with the carb, set the H and L neddles back to factory settings, add fresh fuel with correct fuel to oil mix, keep air filter off and try, if its still bogging down, i would clean out the carb and fit a new gasket kit.
What size is your ultra sonic cleaner? 6L?

Great content pal. Quick question I have a ts400 and it cuts out when not revved. Smokes really badly (white smoke) do you reckon it needs a service or is it something else? Regards
Thanks, it could be a bunch of things, carb not set correctly (idel scew or may need cleaning) and bad fuel mix comes to mind - I would add fresh fuel / oil - 1:50 and clean out the carb (set the H and L needles at the factory settings) try that for a start - could be as simple as too much oil in the fuel
