  • Here I start the machine work on the piece of heavywall tubing.There was quite a bit of machining time so I had to break this into a couple of videos.

    Great show. I started my education in machining but switched to industrial electric. But I remember how much I enjoyed operating those machines, over 40 years ago.

    I worked for almost twelve years on a Monarch lathe, the same model as yours... It had a manufactured date of May, 1942 I thinking... Used it to turn tube sheets for shell and tube evaporator and condensers... I also turned the heads for them, to make a flat surface for the gaskets... That machine could hog some material... Enjoy your videos!!!

    It is amazing the work you can do with industrial size equipment with real three phase power. The most credit goes to the machine operator. Your four legged foreman checks up on you and approves of your work.

      Phase converters work real well and my lathe never stalled even though the converters do reduce the horse power a little bit beats the heck out of pony motors.

    No doubt you do great work , like myself I see there is a lot of old guys commenting and we just take a lot for granted because what we do comes second nature. But those watching just getting started may have not picked up on your four jaw tightening one side and backing off the other a bit a time and why. and indicating and bumping AWAY from your indicator always. Your making great videos and I'm hitting the subscribe button,

    Love your show Adam,I started my career as a welder but quickly realized I liked the machinist work way more. Always learning something new. Not trying to tell you what to do but just be careful hitting that chuck wrench with your hands. It takes its toll after so long. I started really having trouble with a lot of pain in my hands from doing the same thing. I just turned 51 and wish I listened to the “old guys” when I was younger. Take care man,keep up the good work. I love watching you indicate. That was one of the trickiest parts to learn for me!!! Lol

    Adam: I am an amateur machinist Had voc training in high school and have always had an attraction for machining. My career took me in another direction but did not diminish my interest in shop work. There is a saying, mostly in transport vehicles that you should not fall in love with your iron. I don't believe this is true with machine tools. I also believe that that this becomes obvious when you talk about the machines in your shop and how your granddad , father and you worked with these machines, esp. the Monarch lathe. I can see in your face and the tone of your voice the affection you have for the machine because of the connection it has with your past and that your granddad and dad worked on this very same machine. Thanks for sharing. TB

    Hal, yes the other end was out of round and the bore not running concentric with the od, but once the outside is machined and the first end bored, once I flip the part around and indicate the machined area true, when I bore the other end it will also be true with the previously machined areas.

    Adam, its obvious you love what you do for a living.. if you do it full time for work and do it when you get home, that says it all. I have the same feel for my career programming and I can truly appreciate your dedication, effort and quality of work. This is something you dont see very often these days .. i love you home shop setup and would love to have all of those tools/machines, but i wouldnt have the need to use them like you do, nor the space. I do want to get a mill or lathe one of these day(much smaller scale though). I find being able to solve the problems and turn a hunk of metal into a useable part amazing and can imagine the sense of accomplishment you get when you complete the projects. By the way .. do you ever experience things coming out of the chuck or parts disastrously failing .. i think a compilation vodeo of stuff like that would be a great vid, along with narrative explaining the issue and how to keep it from happening. Sorry for the rambling just being true with you, good luck with everything and be safe ..

  • @Abom79
    @Abom79  11 ปีที่แล้ว

    Speeds and feeds are an important part of machining. When using hss tool bits your typically running a slower rpm but can feed fast. I like using tool bits on jobs like this because you have less tool pressure, less heat, and less likely to move the part when boring.

    Nice lathe. I do similar work to you but on a 1936 Dean, Smith and Grace. I turned a tug propeller shaft yesterday and measured a discrepancy of half a thou on a 4" dia over 3ft length. Did the prop taper in one go with the topslide set over and the left hand securing thread finished it.The old lathe earns it's keep.

    That's an impressive video as your munching off some tidy thick cuts, all be it with good tooling with careful speeds and feeds. It also demonstrates the quality of the lathe despite it's age. I think that it does look as though the flood cooling system needs a bit of TLC!!, a few gaskets and replacement pipework is perhaps all though. Well done, very good video with excellent lighting to allow us to see the detail.

    Another nice video Adam! Man, your camera mount really picks up the sound, at first I thought the cuts sounded rough as hell, and then you moved the camera over to show a close up and it was very quiet. Good to see the big Monarch making some chips! Those .200" depth of cuts are awesome!

  • @Abom79
    @Abom79  11 ปีที่แล้ว

    Yes I understand the camera picks up a lot of noise from the machines, its the one bad thing about it. But I like being able to get up on the machine very close to the action. I'll have to play with the base some more and see if I can figure out a way to help dampen the sound. I think its the plastic case that really makes it the worse, but it protects the camera from flying chips, oil, and fluid.
