I am a former Nord user and current Proton user (and Mullvad for a brief time)
I think nord is great for general use and streaming while Proton is great for torrenting and port forwarding.
One of the few issues Nord that erks me is that it costs over 12 dollars or more for its extensive features.

Nord is better than proton because protonvpn leaks traffic when connection drops on android..it's kill switch failed to stop traffic on android. They need to work on it.

Which is better? Well none of them. In my opinion VPN is needed maybe for perpetrators only. Maybe for authoritarian countries also, but dictators can easily cut internet from the rest of world. So, VPN is not so much helps. BTW, Tom Scott very clearly explain this also.
They're useful if you're using public wifi and want to stay safe, they're also great if you want to torrent games, watch pirated movies, change your location for netflix. You can even use a VPN to set your location to Poland if you don't want to watch 5 minutes of twitch ads every 15 minutes.
VPN are very useful. Privacy + Security + Independence on the internet. The important condition is that VPN should not log data and share data and there should be no leaks.
As IT security engineer i never used open wifi. Better is use local mobile 4G or 5G carrier in foreign country than those wifis. Why? Because nobody audits a VPN provider for transparency. You are not sure about your privacy. This is more like "Trust me bro" technique.
