If there are any younger hunters watching this man, pay attention. I've had the opportunity to track and shoot some large bigwoods bucks. I wish that when I was younger I had someone like this man to listen to. I'm 61 and all beat up now ,but believe me, if you are a tracker, or enjoy big woods hunting Dale is very knowledgeable. I listen every opportunity I get. Billy Snyder
Billy,I sure appreciate the comment. As people have less time to spend in the woods,or choose that direction,The art of speed - scouting becomes imperative.
I just love your vids, common old school teaching. I'm a fifty year plus veteran of hunting Nicolet national forest. I never give-up continue to relearn hunting big woods.
This will be my 1st year hunting Nicolet National Forest! My grandfather lives near Townsend and I am so excited to explore as I bow hunt! These videos and the tips from your generation are priceless!
Thank you! It's so much fun to be with you as walk thru the beautiful forests of northern Wisconsin. I started hunting deer in that area in 1970. Their were not a lot of deer at that time but just being out and seeing a few during the season was fantastic.
Like yourself I am in the big woods of northwestern corner of wisc. I have hunted these islands for years, you have to be very quiet & get there very early & do not hunt those spots with a full moon, a good natural ground cover or a treestand is the best way to hunt these, have different areas to sit do to wind & different ways to enter if possible, if not keep your hunting time very limited to that area or you will spook them forever. Great video, reminds me of doing the same thing, happy hunting & always be safe. 🦌🎯👍
Excellent comment.I agree,,these areas to me are very sensitive.i personally stay out of these areas as late fall develops, until I actually hunt them.I use a homemade ghillie suit, and bury myself against a tree. Many times they walk right by me.The are very challenging areas. Thanks again.
I'm an old hunter too old to hunt anymore, but my eyes lit up when I saw your first picture of the bog with the island in the background. I agree with all you have to say about the great opportunities that exist in scouting out this particular territory. Thanks for giving important pointers and sage advice to the new generations of hunters. To find a deer, one has to think like a deer. Take care and be well.
Thank you for the wonderfull comment.I do agree that many sportsman seem to take the easy way out ,and consequently miss out on an incredible amount of education in reference to the animal they are pursuing.
@@Buckman-101 Thanks for your nice reply. Here's a personal story from long ago when I was a fairly new hunter. Like in your picture, there was a treed island surrounded by a bog that I wanted to check out. I slowly and quietly headed out across the frozen bog, but about halfway across, I busted through the ice and went up to my knees in the frigid water. Struggling to not fall over, I slogged through the loud breaking thin ice while grabbing and breaking off tag branches as I headed to the island's higher ground. Nearly exhausted, I finally stood on the island and propped my rifle on a tree trunk while I caught my breath. Cursing myself for being so careless and ruining half a day of hunting, I knew that I had alerted every deer within miles with my struggles through the bog. I turned around to look at the well-beaten deer trail I was now standing on, and when I finally looked up, standing perhaps 10 feet from me, was a fork buck staring at me with these huge open eyes. We stared at each other in disbelief and when I flinched to grab my rife, the deer took off like a shot and was gone. All I could do then was to shake my head and laugh. Lesson learned!
You must realize the greatest part of being adventurous in the woods will produce fantastic stories like the one you just told me.I truly believe that the stories of the deer that "got away" are engrained in your mind sometimes more than the deer that you killed.
@@Buckman-101 So true! Glad that you appreciated my sitting around the campfire story. Most people never get to experience such things like you, and I do, which is a pity. I really appreciate you doing your best to impart your wisdom to those willing to explore nature and venture deep into the forest to find their true ancient roots. Be well and venture ever onwards, my friend.
Yes sir I hunt basically same thing. I have see deer almost every sit that I hunt it and have shot a few. But yes they like them islands. I usually go to those spots second week of the gun season. Nice video thanks for sharing it
fantastic channel Mr Dale. You got my curiosity going on the homemade ghillie suit. How are you hanging your licking branches usually? Thanks so much for sharing your knowledge!
The weather seems to be advancing all deer movement ,so I will be showing you my liking branches quite often.Check my past video on cedar swamp edges.I put out a branch there also .I put them just at chest level .The deer work them up and down, and all around.Ill see if I can send a picture from home of my ghillie suit, and send it to your E-mail.Its really nothing fancy, but it works.
I simply put about a cup of ammonia and an eighth cup of doe urine. That can very .It's up to you. Then fill with water.Half a milk jug. There again, you can create what ever you feel appropriate. Thanks for the comment.
I certainly saw more this past late season in December. Some areas in the northern counties here are getting pounded by out of state bird hunters.Being guided.

Well D M ,you hit it on the head.
There is so much more in the hunt in the big woods than the kill itself.
Thank you for doing these video's. I am 71 and don't get around very good anymore but its great for the younger hunters to learn!!
Well Doug, just follow along on my trails, and we will see where it takes us.
