They dropped the rates for political reasons. This guy in blue is comparing 08 rate drops to this coming up recession but back in 08 there was no inflation, thats why they were able to lower rates like that. They cannot do that this time around, are going into a recession with inflation problem, last time this happened was in 81/82 and BOC pushed interest rates above 20% to kill off the inflation, and rates stayed high (8% average) throughout the decade following.

    • @unlockyourway

@@unlockyourway Yes. If you look at the late 70s, which was the last time we saw double digit inflation in Canada when Trudeau Senior was the prime minister coincidentally, the prime rate did not just go up in one direction; it was progressive, with the occasional lowering of the rate to keep ppl guessing. You can look at the prime rate historic chart on google for Canada and you will see it didn't go in one direction upwards to the 20ish % peek that we saw early 80s, it was big pushes up, with little pushes down to keep ppl guessing. At the end of the day, the only tool they have to kill off inflation is pushing up the prime rate, it has always been like this...the only thing is we have never seen inflation issues in Canada in 30 plus years so everyone forgot.....but now that it is hear, the way to save the economy is by increasing rats. Look, home ownership is a privilege in this Country, but hyperinflation hits EVERYONE, and destroys democracies. Ppl cant afford to put food on the table or clothes on their back when inflation gets out of control, so controlling inflation will always be the priority of central banks because they know history, not just the last 5 or ten years, but real history. They will 100 percent put us in a severe recession and destroy ppl with bad debt out there to mitigate the inflation issue...
