      Not sure what you want to tell me... of course you have very shallow depth of field when you take photos of things that are not bigger than two or three millimeters. Even at high f-stops this does not change. Your only option would be focus stacking, which I didn't do in the example pictures.

    When the focus depth of field is so shallow, stop down aperture to gain a slightly better focus area, increase light output on modifier accordingly.

      Well, I would say the stuff I do in this video is quite self explanatory. It was never meant to be a tutorial - I just wanted to show some macro equipment that can be useful and that some people might not know. Oh, and for the record - I don't care what you want. The TH-cam channel is just a hobby, I don't make money from it. There is no need for me to make everybody happy. There are others who got some new ideas or inspiration from this video - and that's why I put it online.

    why dont you get a extention rod show to attach to the one tripod and attach the flash and camera to it?

    Hi! Great video. Could you explain how you created the diy aperture ring? That's really useful. Thanks.

    • @CRVideoTutorials
      @CRVideoTutorials  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi! That was qute easy: I took an old Minolta lens rear cap and cut a hole into it's middle. These caps are perfect, because they move the aperture when you rotate them. Not all rear caps do that. At first I bought some cheap caps online to create my aperture ring. They fit onto my lenses, but they didn't move the aperture.

    That's a bit too much equipment to lug around and mess with out in the field, imo. By the time you get all that setup and in position, the insect is likely to have changed positions or left, unless it's dead.

    • @CRVideoTutorials
      @CRVideoTutorials  6 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      True, but my intention was to just show the whole equipment. Of course it is possible to use only a part of it. The flash and softbox can be mounted onto the camera, you can work without the bellows and so on. It always depends on the situation, how many parts I use.

      Hi! Thanks for your comment. To be honest, I have no Idea what this little creature is. It looks like a small grasshopper to me. I found quite a lot of them on this small lemon tree during the summer. They appear to have different colors. The one in the video was red and brown, but others had a white color. On the photos the animal looks a bit like an alien creature with this big eyes. : )

    Nice pictures, BUT this setup is quite "uncomfortable". Maybe you make a video showing a handheld solution

    • @CRVideoTutorials
      @CRVideoTutorials  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah, it is uncomfortable, but all the parts can be used in different configurations. This is the whole set up, which I rarely use in this complete form. Most of the time I use only parts of it.

      To be honest, I can not remember most of the names as most of them are no name products that I bought online years ago. The Mini-Softbox is a SMDV FS-180 and the tripods are Rollei C5.

    Can you provide the buying links for the equipments?

    • @CRVideoTutorials
      @CRVideoTutorials  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi! I bought most of the stuff on ebay. Some parts of the equipment, like the bellows (in this case a Novoflex), are old models that can be found there for a good price. You don't need exactly the same models of the equipment. One example: there are so many different soft boxes for flashes, and most of them will work beautifully to soften the light. Same for tripods (link can be found somewhere in the comments below) and other parts of the equipment. I would suggest that you go to amazon or ebay and type in the type of equipment you are looking for. Then it depends on the price you want to pay, which model you choose.

      Sorry for my late reply - I bought the flexible clamp as part of a set on Amazon. Not sure any more, which brand it was exactly, but you should be able to find similar sets there.

    Is this applicable to any 50mm lens ?

    • @CRVideoTutorials
      @CRVideoTutorials  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      You can use any 50 mm lens reversed and get a "magnifying glass". Of course you need the right reverse adapter for the lens diameter and your mount. But I am not sure about the aperture hack with the rear cap - I think this only works on some AF lenses. If you want to control the aperture the best solution would be a manual lens.

  • @mikemalloy1681
    @mikemalloy1681 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    You can turn your lens around backwards? How does that differ from using an actual macro lens?? Good video, BTW.

    • @CRVideoTutorials
      @CRVideoTutorials  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi!
      Well, it depends on the focal length of the lens. The smaller the focal lengh the closer you can get to your object. So with some reversed lenses it is possible to reach higher magnifications. I love to use my normal macro lenses, because you are much more flexible with them. But at the same time the combination of reversed lenses and bellows works nearly like a microsope. The downside is that it is much more difficult to make such photos - you need a lot of light and you are limited to manual focus.
      Also reversed lenses can be a nice tool for people who can't or don't want to afford a real macro lens.

    Reverse ring adapter depends on camera mount or its universal for all?

    • @CRVideoTutorials
      @CRVideoTutorials  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      It depends on the camera mount and on the diameter of your lens. Just an example: if you have a Sony A-mount camera and a lens with a front diameter of 58 mm you need a adapter for 58 mm lenses and A-mount.

    Beautiful images that seemed to have a bit more thought to composition than many micro images. Many people, myself included if Im honest, are happy with the massive magnification without much thought to everything else until the editing phase. Yours seem to have more thought gone into all the other elements. Roughly what size magnification were you working at please? I only really get to 2x with my Canon 100mm L f2.8 and my macro tubes. Great video.

    • @CRVideoTutorials
      @CRVideoTutorials  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi! Thanks for the nice comment! I'm not sure about the magnification, but I guess it was something like 3x or even 4x. The first insect on the photos was not bigger than 3 mm, as far as I remember. Bellows allow real high magnification but a lot of light is needed. And of course the sharpness of the image is affected by the huge distance between the lens and the sensor.

      In this video I use an old a-mount Minolta 50 mm F2.8 Macro lens, but with the right adapter nearly every lens can be used on the bellows. For example I also use old photo projector lenses for macro photography.

      I don't know what online shops are available in India, but I bought most of the stuff online (ebay, Amazon, enjoyyourcamera). Here in Europe you can order most of the things in local photo stores - i guess that's also possible in India.

      I can't remember the exact costs of all the components. I bought them over a period of more then three years, one after the other. If I had to guess, I would say something between 1500-1800 Euros. But you can get the camera much cheaper now, so it will be probably less than that.
