This guy has been kicking in front of 60-80,000 fans in Ireland. I think he will do well.

Hopefully this guy gets a fair shot in the league and some good game experiences.

If he makes it to preseason, I like his chances in the next 2 years assuming he shows out

NFL aside - you'll start seeing a decent uptick in College kickers and punters being from Ireland. Check out Idaho state kicker - Ross Bolger, Right and Left footer serious boot, similar potential to Charlie. What's coming from Ireland is kids who are regularly playing Gaelic Football, Soccer and Rugby - all sports between the age of 8 to 17 before they start narrowing their focus, lots of training time too as they play underage club and underage school. The benefit here is these kids learn to instinctively kick various styles of balls and lots of game time had... so transitioning to American Football will be more a mental game. The next 4 years will be interesting to watch the dynamic change.

The Packers have an Irish punter (Daniel Whelan) win the job last year, now Smyth has a chance to kick for New Orleans?
More of the Éire-to-US pipeline please!

Foreign kickers in the NFL were the norm for a while there in the 80s....might be making a comeback!

Sonething that hasnt come up in comments I've heard or read is how GAA goalkeepers like Charlie grow up restarting games just like kickoff in NFL multiple times per game, 25+, and pick out teammates at various distances from 20-60 yards. Also they may loop the ball out or fire a low trajectory fast ball.
With the new kick off rule he would be well used to dropping the ball at any point inside the 20 either hard and fast or from a height with different movement. Could be interesting to see. He will also be well used to kicking out of his hands again with precise accuracy.

Tony Meola from the US Mens Team tried to make the Jets but didn't make it out of training camp

@@aarond23 remember that alright. Soccer keeper of his era would be different skill set from modern GAA keepers though who are often the team's free kick takers. If any of the other players like Rory Beggan get a job as well, the demand for early skill work with an American.football could grow quickly.

Be surprised if he starts this year. But next year with a year of full time practice, might find himself starting.

This year is doubtful, but sets a god precedent if he does well!

I disagree partially on the difference between NFL and other kickers. Not at all obvious that having to come on and kick is worse than having to run for miles, tackle, be tackled and then kick.
I think the main difference, for set piece kicks rather than flow of the game kicks, is time pressure. None of the other sports have the equivalent of the snap and so many players charging you.
In addition a bad punt is generally worse in NFL than the other games.
That said how many NFL games have the pressure of scoring a drop goal in the world cup final with 20 seconds left
