I didn't think of the person calling for help as needing help, more like they are trying to get help for Tyler but he "would rather play a song for the eyes to sing along." Kinda like when someone is injured you are supposed to call 911, this person is trying to help Tyler but he is shutting them out and he is afraid to let go of what he knows: depression. Sometimes when recovering from mental illness it can be scary because you don't know what to expect, so sometimes it is easier to stay where you are. Also I will say that the ceiling fans and idle hands is definitely referring to suicidal thoughts as people will hang themselves on ceiling fans. If you are suicidal it is best to keep yourself busy because when you are sitting just thinking it can become very tempting (from my own personal past experience).

CrypticMShadow that makes so much sense like how the person at the door doesnt need help but is trying to call and get help for tylers mental illness but tyler would rather feed into his demons omg

That's definitely another explanation that has to be seriously considered in this conversation, but in that theory, Jesus asks for help, and it doesn't fit in Christian theology for Jesus to ask for help.

i think the chorus is talking about the fans i think that when he plays concerts he can kind of ignore his own struggles and deal wiht his fans' struggles. and so he wants to deal with his own anxieties and struggles, but its so much easier to just explain them to other people then actually fix them. i aslo think this goes along with the last part, "make them stop." this can be kind of confusing because her wants the glowing eyes (the fans) to stop singing with him. i think this can either be that Tyler doesnt think they know him enough, or that they are distracting him from fixing the prblem. but thats just one side and it doesnt make complete sense, but i guess that is the TOP way

I’m pretty sure that when he says “this room is far too dark for us to stay around” he’s referring to the room of depression that he mentioned earlier, meaning that he wants to leave that room because the depression has just gotten to be too much and he wants to commit suicide, and at the end when he’s saying “make them stop” he’s wanting to leave, because suicide is pretty much wanting everything to stop, right? And at the end of the song I always feel like he *did* end up commuting suicide. It’s a pretty sad and deep song and I’m probably wrong but whatever 🤷‍♀️🤷‍♀️

I think the chorus is (like you said) about taking the effort to help someone even if it's easier to go with your demons (glowing eyes). This goes along with the origin of their name which references an Arthur Miller play "All My Sons" - in it the main character faces a choice between an easy route that will harm people and a difficult route that will save lives. In Glowing Eyes, Tyler is trying to convince himself to take the harder route and help the people that need it.
This is a quote from Tyler explaining the meaning of the name in detail:
"Ok so, I (Tyler) was in theatre class and we were studying a play called “All My Sons” written by Arthur Miller in the 40’s. It was about a father who ran a company that provided parts for airplanes used in WWII. He then found out that his parts were faulty, so he comes to a moral crossroads:1. He can take the parts back and not send them out, but he will lose a lot of money in a financially tough situation. He would also taint his business and his name and be known as ‘unreliable’ in his trade. But this would ultimately be the ‘right’ thing to do. or,2. send the parts out, make the necessary money to provide for his family, not taint his name, etc. He ends up sending the parts out and twenty one pilots died because of it. His son was a pilot in the war who had lost his life. There was no evidence to prove that it was directly related but his daughter blamed her father for her brothers death. He ended up committing suicide at the end of the play. Here’s how we make it relevant: I feel like we are all constantly encountering moral crossroads where the decisions that benefit the “now” will have consequences down the road; but the decision that might seem tough and tolling right away will ultimately be more rewarding. What is our purpose for playing music? We are constantly asking ourselves that question. The answer can change all the time, but for right now we are just going to stick with something as simple as 'we want to make people think.' "

Owen Lee one of the things about message man is that the lyrics are actually message, man so it's telling people not to mess with the message and it think the fact that the comma is unknown so it's ironic because that's exactly what happening.

I always think that in the second verse about "knowing somebody who knows somebody..." I always think of someone living in denial who maybe doesn't accept this mental struggle, or refuses to analogize their hurt and instead is "doing great."
And then he enters in the scene, with lyrics talking about how his life is hard.
Take this a step further, (this might be a stretch, but...) and you could almost take Lane Boy and have it reference pop artists that don't really deal with depression lyrics. They might be living sort of a double life and are "doing great."

  • @MattaoTao
    @MattaoTao 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

I disagree with you in some way.
Where it says "They called for help of this I'm sure, but I would rather sing a song for the eyes to sing along." What I disagree is that the person calling for help is Tyler's mind telling him "Hey, this is going too far. You need help" but he allows himself to become overwhelmed, almost submitting to the glowing eyes, aka his dark side.

  • @MusicLover1PIE
    @MusicLover1PIE 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

I always thought of it as the glowing eyes being a metaphor for depression and the part of "i'm holding on to what i know and what i know i must let go" it means what he knows is his demons or depression and he knows he must let go of it, but he would rather stay there and let the eyes sing along to all the songs he writes about his demons. When he sings "make them stop" he just want them to stop "singing along" and feeding him bad things.

I always interpreted the line, "I know there's someone at the door. They've called for help, of this I'm sure," as a suicide attempt. Tyler locked himself in his room to kill himself, but someone is trying to get in and called for help.

I think the person at the door is Tyler while the glowing eyes are his fans. Since it's a singular person verses the many people. He would rather help the his fans than help himself. But I don't know just guessing... Welp thank you for doing glowing eyes! I've been waiting for this! Thanks

Ceiling fans and idle hands will take my life again is referring to suicide. Specifically hanging oneself. It's nonchalant, because you don't care about yourself, so that's the idle hands part, then most people hang themselves on the ceiling fan.

I think this song is about someone (maybe tyler) thinking about killing themselves. the lyric "While ceiling fans and idle hands will take my life again." Because some suicide attempts using nooses use a celling fan. That's what I also think the cover of the STA is. Someone who has died from suicide.

This is my take on it as someone who’s dealt with mental illness for a long time which is often the theme of their songs.
First chorus: glowing eyes: people who don’t get it, crowds and people going about their lives who have no clue of the struggles going on, because they don’t get it they romanticize what he’s going through, like they’re watching his misery.
Someone asking for your help means separating yourself from your misery and your pain and he’s not ready to. So rather play a song: I️ think it he’d rather put on a show like he’s ok for the eyes (people) than help people and reveal his true struggles.
We all know somebody: he sees the example of people being okay and very well off in life, doing great, and it makes him think he’s alone, even though the logic boils down to nobody has their shit together all the time, and everyone makes each other miserable because since they all appear to be doing great they all feel alone. Leads to I’ll kindly enter in: he’d rather be in his own thoughts and with the eyes than partake in the vicious cycle of fine not fine, he’d prefer that than face his loneliness and the reminder that he needs to be vulnerable with other people to help them and to help himself.
Ceiling fans: at night a lot I stare at the ceiling. When I️ do typically that’s when thought spiral to suck a dark place and some people, that is when they decide to take their lives, and idle hands is because hands hold things that you use to take your life or self harm.
The nights decor: I️ think of night as beauty. Dreams are always portrayed in a way that reminds you it’s unobtainable because it never was real. The beauty and peace of night is something you can never experience because you feel like that joy is nonexistent.
This room is far too dark: sometimes my thoughts spiral so horribly I️ know I️ need to leave the room and distract myself to get me out of that dark place. Realizing that you can’t deal with this darkness anymore, and if you’re gonna survive and live you need to leave. This can also be compared to seeking treatment for mental illnesses.
Redemptions not that far and darkness is going down: hopeful, you can escape, slowly learning to rise above that darkness and learning to live again.
Final chorus takes on a different meaning because of the bridge. Holding onto what I️ know: the dark thoughts is all you know. Learning to be vulnerable again and to have empathy and help others again. Rather play a song: an after thought. In the back of his head, it’s been second nature for him for so long, and even though he’s getting better he still has thoughts of unintentionally returning to the dark place.
Make them stop: he’s getting better, so the eyes are becoming more aggressive, he really just wants them to stop and for him to be ok again.
    That’s my take on it

Dude...okay you know about illuminati right? Okay so hes, reffing to Jesus in the. Part you said about "some one at the door" that's huge its Jesus knocking at the door, he needs let in- "helped in" I should listen to the song I haven't yet but just had to throw out my thought on what you said, "holding on to what he knows he knows he should let go" of his sinfulness life and live for jesus hes surrounded by so many demons in the industry, and us that are most demon possessd the "glowing eyes" but also on the same note check out a video to dig deeper on that "glowing eyes" mention, it's a video called like Russian elites glowing eyes, there was a band playing at a party for them and the lights whent out do to "power outage" or someone in the know trying to expose them, I can see some lunatic crazy that believes they are lizards or something and knows they aint right or knew that it would happen so they turned power out? Lol I do but then the strangest thing happened the eyes of the elite Russians at the party glowed bright in the dark with NO light on them to reflect so its not anymore a next subject that something is going on with eyes Elites of the elites you have some TH-cam videos about this and they turn demonic like cat eyes could be due to shifting and Lighting of the eyes but there is no reason for the lights to turn off and their eyes to Glow the way they did this is a huge breakthrough in evidence but still does not put all the pieces together as long as we as a people keep poking at the bear more or less it will get Disturbed so just be careful man what you do find out. Much love oh by the way i came across your video about this as I was looking into that video I'm talking about type it into search bar Russian Elites at party glowing eyes. And that was a band playing for the glowing eyes, Litteraly and I think this is what he's trying to tell us man just like in Queen of the Damned and Lestat plays in a band and he's a vampire revealing vampire Secrets through his lyrics now seeing this it's not so far-fetched is it I believe that they are more or less Illuminati and they are a part of a cult and summon demons I don't think they would be vampires or lizard people as much as demon possessed my best idea on it because you hear about musicians talking about selling their souls to the devil a lot from Kanye to Eminem to Old Blues jazz players at a Crossroads to sell his soul to play the guitar way back when. It's all connected...

To me I think the ‘glowing eyes’ are fans/people who he’s helping with his music and when the someone who’s at the door calls Tyler help (His family or a therapist or something) Tyler has a choice, he either gets help and cures his depression or he could continue writing emotional songs for the glowing eyes to sing along to. So when he says “but do I want to say good bye, to all the glowing eyes” he’s questioning weather he should get help from the person and stop writing songs for his fans or to continue venting his emotions onto lyrics for the glowing eyes. He’s holding onto what he knows (writing depressing songs) but he knows he should not and instead accept the help but he’d rather write songs for the glowing eyes to sing along to. It’s as if Tyler is sacrificing his mental health for the glowing eyes. Another line that fits this theory is when he starts singing about how we all know people who are doing good in life, “but I’ll kindly enter into rooms of depression while ceiling fans and idle hands will take my life again”. Tyler Will gladly succumb to depression for his fans and write songs that will help them while trying to avoid suicide. Idk this is probably all wrong but whatever the real meaning behind the song is it’s probably super depressing lol.

I think the person at the door is calling for help because Tyler has locked himself in the room with the harmful things (glowing eyes). The person knows Tyler needs help and Tyler knows they're there for him, but he would rather keep entertaining his dark thoughts. Sometimes its easier to stay in your thoughts even if they're harmful than to talk to someone about it. But at the end, Tyler decides that he can't stay with them anymore and tells them to be quiet.

thank you for making this! I view the song similarly to how you do, except I think that when he says "they called for help, of this I'm sure" he is referring to himself. i think he's referring to himself because it's showing that he's a bit conflicted. he wants to get help and feel better and say goodbye to his demons, but at the same time he doesn't because his demons is where he gets his creativity from and so they are a large part of who he is. Either version could be right though, I feel like this song is much more abstract that their others, so it has more possibilities about its meaning. I hope my theory made sense. Also, I'll go check out your podcast! xx

With the lyrics "ceiling fans and idle hands will take my life again" I instantly thought suicide, like hanging yourself thought the idle hands I didn't instantly associate it with suicide, it could be though.

I think the concert is better primarily because I think in this Era, Tyler finds priority in talking to his fans and seeing where they are in their faith. that said, that can be hard as all christians know, so he'd rather just sing to them.
my personal interpretation was more oriented around addiction. not necessarily to drugs or alcohol, but to things that he knows he shouldn't do.
thats all of my thoughts I think.
I did some work on this song on Genius.com. my username is IntrospectiveBeet. you can check out my work if you want :)

so the chorus I think is that he's lying on his bed, in the dark and his room is his controlled environment and outside there are people needing his help, maybe it's his family, maybe it's friends, maybe fans, who knows. And Tyler is singing songs so that the eyes, which are probably demons or something not that nice, are contempt and don't attack him. So when there's someone at the door, needing his help, he's struggeling between doing the right thing and helping that person or saving his own neck and not helping. And it makes sense from a songwriter's perspecitve because you play and write songs to keep the demons in check, to stay sane and deal with stuff and usually for that moment it's finally quiet in your head, that moment when you play your song, to other people or even to your bedroom walls or that moment when you finally let out those emotions and put them on paper.

Previous to this, I took the connotation of glowing eyes as something soft, such as cats or owls, or in my kind, I hear safety. So when he says I'd rather play a song for the eyes to sing along, I thought he would rather stay comfortable and safe.
