  • In this video I'll show you how I built my own desk for my home music studio. It has built in drawers for a keyboard, effects unit, and speaker stands just right for mixing. The stands also house my computer, external hard drives, and a mixing board.

    i like your style of theory, ''there's nothing that feels better to build something that no one else has or can easily duplicate'' i also does the same when am building stuff thanks a lot

      Nature King Thank you very much. I think plans for this kind of project would be frustrating for everyone, since I built it around equipment I already had. Thanks for watching and the thoughtful comment.

    This is great wood-work. I'm a beginner at it but love making stuff. Your message at the end alone is worth the watch and I fully agree. I've started my own producer desk and despite some mistakes, I'm pretty proud of what I made this far. Anyway, inspiring ! Thanks !

    Thanks! Looks like the only way to get a 100% custom desk without mortgaging the house is to make it yourself. Will check out the dowelmax...looks like a real time saver. Also nice to hear how you tackled the oops with the speaker stands. Good to see folks showing how they overcome issues since we all run into them sooner or later.

      FranklinWoodWorks haha. Probably not. I'm a total novice. What I am building is basically an extended table with a rollout keyboard drawer underneath. What I don't know how to do just yet is how to get everything together without putting screws through my desktop. I bought some brackets and some small screws but I'm still not sure that this is the best way to go. Any ideas? (Without using dowels)

    • @FranklinWoodWorks2016
      @FranklinWoodWorks2016  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes! Pocket Holes! You can either buy a kreg jig, or harbor freight sells the same thing for 1/4 the cost. TH-cam "pocket holes" and I think that will be your answer.

    Thank you so much! This is exactly what I needed to watch. I'm building a very similar desk for my studio. I can't do rabbets, so I'll put dowels everywhere... I will steal your idea and not glue the shelf/speaker stands, that's genius... thank you for sharing how you messed up, I've only built a few things and this project intimidates me... I feel reassured to see that you had to rehearse, I'm not the only one feeling anxious about this kind of project... I really want it to look great... by the way, i'm mounting my desk on a motorized standing desk frame... wish me luck!

    Awesome x3! Great advice at the end about making your own design too. The thing I find is that I need to really use my gear and figure out some workflow stuff before I even know what I need. And then that will last 1-2 yrs if im lucky before I switch it all up. Gotta make everything more difficult, never satisfied lol. Also, the dowel jig! I want! Dont think I'll ever need one but that is the coolest tool i've seen in a while haha

    • @FranklinWoodWorks2016
      @FranklinWoodWorks2016  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      So the challenge for you is to make something that can grow or change with you. This isn't as hard as you may think. Don't think in terms of what specific equipment you have now, just think in terms of types of equipment. Computer, keyboard, mixer, effects - all these can be generic in size and placement. The only thing I did that was equipment specific was where I put my mixer. I know that even if I get a different one, it will still be around the same size. I'm too old to ever need anything bigger. You could even incorporate, for lack of a better word, a "rack" system that will allow you to put any number of things in there, from power amps to interfaces. Of course the big advantage for me is that the only thing I'd ever need to pull out of my desk to go play somewhere is my POD HDX. I think you can do it.

    Thanks for sharing (the video about making the legs too). I'm currently planning to building a studio desk and trying out figure out options for the legs. My current design has three-way joints at the top of each of the four legs (with stretchers running between legs). Looking at you've done makes me think I possibly don't need all of the stretchers and can possibly simply the joint design.

      SheepdogColumbus I've asked myself that question many times. I guess when you have many things going on at once, like spreading glue, clamping in odd directions, all with limited open time on the glue, mistakes happen. It's why I don't do this for a living.
