Thanks, Janis for this video. Perfect example of how a couple buddies and me bowhunted elk in the early 2000s. Carried out camp on our backs. Bedded down up high , to stay out of elks wind. Hung out, glassed meadows as far as we could see, and slept during midday, hopefully waiting for some action in the late afternoon/evening. We were hunting Colorado. Elevations between 8,000 to 11,000 feet, and in designated Wilderness areas, so no ATVs, 4WD vehicles. Horseback, or hike in only. We hiked. In 5 years of bowhunting, between, we 3, we only got 2 bulls. The one year, I did not go with them, they each got a cow elk. The 80-20 rule? Bowhuntig elk, in CO, back then was only a 14% success rate. We had quite a few opportunities, but the varying drifting wind always screwed us, some way or another. Janis' hunt reminded me of all that. Thanks, Janis for reminding me of those hunts!
What a bloody beautiful location. Thanks for sharing. Also, Janis doing exactly the opposite of what he said on the same day he said it (leaving an animal for later) was bloody hilarious.
Another great video. I'm also reminded of an earlier MeatEater phrase, something along the lines of "don't pass up today what you will hope for on the last day"
I’m not an avid hunter but I like how this guy is into the process and it’s not all about the kill. And I like how he uses old tech, not high overpowered rifles. This is real hunting. ❤
Janis this is honestly my bucket list dream hunt. That’s with the understanding that it’s called hunting not harvesting. If you need someone to stalk that gorgeous country with, absolutely hit me up. I’d love to be out there with you.
Thanks for another super cool video, Janis. If you have a second, would you mind sharing the 411 on which model of Can-Am you have? I have a Defender Limited but thinking about adding a quad to the mix for running around over here in the Bitterroot. Any info would be great. TIA!
This reminds me of iowa hunting white tail for gun seasons. Deer get pushed onto private by hunters and thats it. Also with that much pressure i dont think you could ever call yourself into a close encounter. They know the game and they know whats going on. It sucks but this is what happens when you have had R3 shoved down everyones throat for the last 15 years and well the hunting landscape changes.
I’m in northern minnesota. I’ve only seen wolves coyotes and grouse the last 5 years. I saw a nice buck a week before opener while grouse hunting, but that was it. Does on cameras but no doe tags in this area,
Try to setup between the preassure and the private land and let the other hunters push animals to you. Just gotta find the most probable escape routes and on opening day let the other hunts do the work for you. Calling is overrated on public land. Gotta learn how to spot and stalk ambush
Janis hung his food, but what other precautions when camping very light in bear country? Is the electric fence thing worth it, or too heavy? That tent looks like an angry racoon could tear it open.
I live, camp, and hunt in Montana. As long as food is properly stored, like hanging it, you don't need an electric fence. No one I know, nor myself, has ever used one. I don't even use a tent, I usually just sleep out under the stars with a bivvy sack. Although in heavy bear country I will always keep either my rifle or my 12ga with a slug in close proximity to where I'm sleeping.
The highlight of the trip was running into other hunters? Only someone who hunts for a living would say that. I guarantee the other guys weren’t thinking the same.
Modern day market hunting, now the money just comes from the gear, media deals, and podcast ads. “These guys using up all their PTO.” Hunting for the sake of content is getting out of hand. Janis can’t even relate to other people who don’t hunt for a living.
Once meat eater destroys all the public land hunting in Montana where will they go next? They used to be relatively relatable but now they are all professional hunters killing for content
Outside of the National Parks, Montana is magnificently devoid of wildlife. It's quite spectacular, really. Enjoy your steaks! We trade cows for wildlife in Montana.
Janis, you’re my favorite of the meateater folk….bit complaining about pressure when you’re one of the main causes for the increase in pressure, especially in Montana is….interesting
To be honest, the majority of the influx of hunters in Montana in recent years has been from both the popularity of the Yellowstone series, and the waves of people who moved here from blue states during the K0vid lockdowns. I'm a hunter in Montana, and I've never met someone who does it for social media, but I have ran into many more hunters in recent years compared to before, just from the influx in people moving here. We even gained more reps in congress from all the people moving here over K0vid.
@@DamonLightfoot that’s better then it seemed, im glad its more people naturally returning to hunting and not just for clicks ,as for the reps i hope they are on the side of hunters and conservation we could always use more of them standing up for what we love
Don't let the crappy bugle fool you always I had that same thing happen 1 nice bugle followed by a crappy one. After an hour of calling I say screw it it's a hunter I'm leaving. As soon as I start walking away cow calling a small 6 point came in 30 yards away and I blew it
Montana saw a big uptick in bowhuners on public land after covid. Seemed like 2019 was the cutoff year to find solitude. All 4 of my spots got crowded after 2020..

In Montana you're only required to where orange once the general rifle season starts. We have almost 2 months of archery before that where it is not required.
@@Timberlost Yeah, I've been in a situation bow hunting where myself and two other separate parties were calling each other in from 3 different hill peaks. Pretty embarrassing when you all realize it lol.
The common elk hunting zone’s problems. Not always sure if it’s man made bugle or elk. (Some unfortunately are obvious) Just wondering if there could be a universal trend that the man made caller could start the calling with three coughs followed up with a full bugle thereby letting anyone in the vicinity know that they could be chasing a hunter and not the elk. Just my observation but would have to be started by your social media hunting shows.

Good weather, good terrain, good hunt.

I heard you can forget about Germany. No elk there. 😂
