  • Have you ever expected one thing but something else happened? During the execution of a visualization, it's important to understand the order of how things get done in Tableau. During this session, we will cover the order of when things happen from data source filters, context filters and top N filters, to table calculations, trend lines and reference lines.

One thing I like about this presentation is that Kevin and Joe show us the 'normal' steps we take to study the data and how it leads us to the 'wrong' answer. Its not really wrong... Tableau is doing exactly what we told it to do. Instead we do not have the dash set up to answer the question we asked. I really appreciate seeing how to recognize this during my build. This is also useful for deconstructing dashboards and understanding why all those calculations are required. Terrific information. I have recommended this to my team and will probably return to this again and again.

Kevin is brilliant, he is just too good in explaining things. It is not about telling the exact way to do it, but instead make mistakes and help us understand how to solve those mistakes and this is the key for explaining complex tasks which Kevin did.
Useful video on filters, but lot of practice required.

Thanks for the interesting video. why not sharing the Twbx in order for us to play a little along the video ?

For the third case (fixed LOD reference line) they could've Added that LOD calc field into Detail and created a Refernce line that uses that value. Much simpler and visually identical to a simple reference line that used the Measure in Columns. And since it's the same LOD field its value doesn't change with the Rank filter.

Could you please elaborate your comment? I tried but it didn't work. Here's my thought: Essentially, you're still using reference line, which doesn't work because Tableau's order of operations place reference line at the bottom of hierarchy. So the presenter said that forget about using the default reference line approach because it wouldn't give you what you need. Instead he created a line and modified it to look like a reference like. But again, it's not the same as the default Tableaus' reference line.
      Please help me verify this.

Are filters applied on the worksheet level or in the overall data?
