Thanks for posting this. This is a very popular tuning in a lot of Irish music, which is largely done in the Key of D. (I know other keys get used -- but D is a biggie!) A lot of the soul of Irish music is creating a tight, fast rhythm and standard tuning can be problematic in keeping up on reels, jigs and fast airs.
I enjoyed this video. I haven't messed with DADGAD before, but have heard Phil Keaggy plays a lot of his songs in it. You guitar tone and clarity is exceptional for videos and you're easy to follow. Thanks, I subscribed!
Every guitar player needs to consider DAD GAD even if electric, 10x's better smarter more beautiful chords with less effort and more geometric sense 100%
Play smoke on the water on DAD GAD. You’ll just witness the difference in punch from standard tuning I’ve been having a lot of fun with this tuning and figuring it out
I've been playing around with double drop d for quite a while but lately trying more finger style so after watching this dadgad seems to be the perfect thing to try with finger style, many thanks.
Thanks for this tutorial! I've just picked up the guitar for first time in my life to learn and found this video a great help to start making shapes and nice sounds. Still no idea what I'm doing but learning a few chords might help me get over beginner's frustration of not being able to co-ordinate left and rights hands for finger-picking yet.
great video.thanks for sharing.will help alot my band has changed from standard tuning to dadgad.for fun and its turning out pretty cool.again thanks for your time and solid work.cheers.
Sometimes when browsing you can end up in a completely different area of TH-cam than you expected to be, and sometimes, like me today, you can be in the right subject area but, on a completely different planet it seems. I was looking for guitar instructional video’s as I’ve finally decided to try to learn to play my guitar again. I thought to myself “that looks interesting, a different tuning setup. I wonder what that’s all about?” Let me say firstly I love your style, I love your presentation, I totally admire and respect your skill, , , , but I’m sorry I simply don’t have a clue what you’re talking about and yet we both speak English. Minor this, 7th that? How this minor becomes that flat or this sharp. I’ve heard those expressions before obviously but never in relation to playing a guitar. Its not you though I know that. Ive clearly wandered way WAY too far advanced for my level. It’s like a whole new language to me and I’m now wondering if I’m ever gonna live long enough to learn it. (I’m still trying to produce a bar chord without buzzing or deadening strings and I’m 62 for heavens sake!) I’ve subscribed to your channel though mainly as I said because I do like your style and admire your obvious talent but also in the hope that I’ll pick something up or at least hope that some of the mud will stick anyway. Thank you so much for producing the videos. Without people like you many others in the world would never get the opportunity to experience the joy of simply making their own music (even if it’s only for their own pleasure) or even learn anything new. It’s a selfless gift you give and I dearly thank you for it. Have you considered a dvd of some sort though? I’m off to browse your other videos now. (Either that or learn something more simple, like an obscure African click language! ) All the best to you sir. Malc (New UK subscriber)
Yeah, my channel/videos are largely geared towards semi-pro guitarists who want to transition to full time. They generally understand the lingo. However lately I’ve done more videos geared towards beginners check my most recent posts. Thanks for watching.
Hi Tom, This is a great tutorial. My only query, is the use of a plectrum. It seems that DADGAD works best for finger picking, not necessarily strumming. Anyway, that's just my experience, I do not have any friends who play in this fascinating tuning. Thanks for the insights and keep making wonderful music! A fan from Spain
Great video. I'm trying to learn Fare Thee Well (dink's song) in Dadgad but the other youtubers who teach it are missing the C/B chord. How would you play C/B in Dadgad? Thanks
Could you please share the tabs of the very first little melody you play at the start of the video, it sounds so neat and cool ! thanks in advance... greetings from India, Alex J
No. The guitar will short circuit, a positive feedback loop will begin and if you can't get that capo off before it's too late your guitar will EXPLODE!
Tom Strahle thanks alot you are super kind!!! I am trying to get some irish reels on the guitar but Im still new on DADGAD and in this video I cant see him clearly, maybe you can help me!! Heres the link, its in D major so I know he uses G D A Bm but I dont know the positions th-cam.com/video/5lxv7cR_oPM/w-d-xo.html

As a fingerstyle guitarist myself, I always look for additional knowledge from other guitarists.
Thanks for this Info! GOD Bless You, too.
Generous easy going lesson just powered up my interest in this tuning.thx Tom.some lovely sounds from my 12 string
Sweet. I’m so glad.
My favorite tuning besides standard and it's great for slide as well.
Thanks! That Bm chord is a beaut and can also be moved up to the seventh fret, for example, playing the middle four strings, to make a nice Em.
Been wanting to try this tuning for a while and hey-presto, found your channel. Great instructions! Thanks for doing this, and subbed.
The actual chords start at 3:30
Thank you. That was helpful.

I like to keep my options open, I like using fingers and/or pick, but you are correct DADGAD is a very popular tuning for finger stylists.
To my favs !!
Nice!wish my guitar sounded as bright.could it b the strings maybe?
Any chance you could teach that little number at the beginning? It's gorgeous!!
EGAD DAD!! HA!
Great video. I'm trying to learn Fare Thee Well (dink's song) in Dadgad but the other youtubers who teach it are missing the C/B chord. How would you play C/B in Dadgad? Thanks
How are you playing C? Take the bottom note of that chord down one fret.
Could you please share the tabs of the very first little melody you play at the start of the video, it sounds so neat and cool ! thanks in advance... greetings from India, Alex J
Alex Joseph Let me see if I can add it soon.
Dad has is cool
1967 called. They want their shirt back😝
Haha, my wife dresses me. OK, that's even sadder.
Haha. Mine probably should dress me.
Haha. Our better halves.
I want to learn that riff in the start of the vid.
Never mind,, I figured it out, very slowly, but I will get there.
can you do a capoed dadgad
Hmmmm. Let me think about that.
No. The guitar will short circuit, a positive feedback loop will begin and if you can't get that capo off before it's too late your guitar will EXPLODE!
How do I play a C#m in DADGAD? Or close to.
Neither great options, but two that I just came up with...
x4667x
and
11 11 14 13 11 11
Thanks for your reply Tom. I'll give it a try.
Hi Tom! Is there anyway I can contact you so you can help me with DADGAD? Thanks alot man you are awsome!
What did you have in mind? Maybe I can do a TH-cam lesson on it.
Tom Strahle thanks alot you are super kind!!! I am trying to get some irish reels on the guitar but Im still new on DADGAD and in this video I cant see him clearly, maybe you can help me!! Heres the link, its in D major so I know he uses G D A Bm but I dont know the positions

Wish I could see and hear him better. I'm afraid I can't really tell. Sorry about that.
No worries!! Its almost imposibble to see? What about this one? This looks way betterr
I don't see a link.
Yamaha f335
Why do i get the feeling you are actually Keanu Reeves in disguise?
Haha, dang how did you know? Actually had someone comment "I didn't know Kathy Bates played guitar". Made me actually laugh out loud.
Cos youre nuts.
3 minutes into it and still haven't showed 1 chord, damn
Patience. I do eventually.
You need to slow down man. You talk like your on edge. I think you just like to hear yourself talk. I'll try someone else
too much bla bla bla
Talk to much I’m out
