Dress rehearsal for the recital "Paris 1811 - 2006" at West Road Concert Hall, Cambridge, UK, 22nd May 2009. Manuscript discovered in Bibliotecheque Nationale de Paris by Heinz Holliger. One page of manuscript (about 30 bars) was missing, so Holliger completed it. This is the section at the end of the recitative going into the rondo. Originally composed for cor anglais with orchestra, the piano score was put together by Kurt Meier.

This is absolutely wonderful! I wish my high school had an English horn, because I have an extreme desire to play the instrument. It just sounds so much more beautiful and stronger than just the oboe!
By far the best english horn video on the internet! This has to be my favorite double reed video on the internet!
Wow, beautiful tone! I miss playing the English Horn! :) Brings back so many memories.
YOU BOTH PLAY SO NICELY. you play english horn with so much expression i love it i love it
I like your performance so much I have bought one of your CDs. I come back to this track again and again. Your sound is very pleasing and your interpretations very satisfying. Thanks for the pleasure of hearing you
i love cor anglais! its so beautifull! ♥♥
Lovely performance of a beautiful piece! Wonderful tone and phrasing, and nice accompaniment, also.
Wow...that was just lovely. I especially thought 4:36 to 4:51 was awesome. I've never listened to an English Horn before and was just captivated through this whole performance. Thanks for posting and also for the high quality recording !!
Such a gorgeous sound, and a great pianist as well.
Very nice. Always thought this instrument could make some sad sounding melodies. Also romantic.
Sublime! Hermoso sonido! Felicitaciones!
Beautiful, beautiful. Superb soft, sound. I play oboe, but, have,so far not extended to the Cor Anglais. This presentation may help me make a decision to advance my practice skills,....AND, save some more $$$$.
Wonderful job, Althea! I've always loved the English horn (maybe because I was a violist for almost two decades) and you really make it sound good! Everyone I've ever known who's played English horn to any extent always complains about how hard it is to play well and to play in tune, but your playing makes it sound like an easy instrument! Keep up the good work!
beatiful tone!
Very beautiful interpretation and superb rhythm with a great sound!!!!
That is such a beautiful sound!
É de apreciar não só a melodia como a execussão! Há quem não distinga este instrumento, Cor Anglais, do Oboé.👍❤🦘
Muito obrigado por assistir!
very nice sound
i love the sound of this instrument when it is played in the good the bad and the ugly
on "the soldiers theme"
I'm an English Horn player and you have a lovely sound & excellent control.
Excellent - subtle playing
Wow, great tone...Great performance!!!
Absolutely beautiful-& that's coming from someone who has recently begun playing the Cor Anglais himself ;-).
Amazing!
This is a beautiful piece :D
@Wolfoxtail you don't really have to "switch", you can play both! English horn is so beautiful and fun to play, I'd recommend it! (but you don't have to give up oboe!)
Very nice !
@QTKittenz It is usually written in the treble clef
Bravo!!!
@oboelover95 it takes alot more wind than the oboe, you're basically playing out alot more, compared to oboe, where you're usually holding back.
@SouthpawdShredder As well as the french horn, the english horn (alto oboe) is tuned in F. But it belongs to the oboe's family, like the oboe d'amore, baroque oboe, the bass oboe and he piccolo oboe.
lovely timbre
@MaestroTJS I love the oboe d'amore..definately the oboe of love..I just love the oboe and it family..oboe definately has a beautiful upper register...i do love the upper register of the cor..it just moves right through you..
pimped out clarinet :D
@oboelover95 I don't think. I don't play the oboe and the english horn, but I was told that the fingering is very similar...
That was my piano teacher!
@SouthpawdShredder Wha? Wow,English horn and French horn are in two different families. I'm curious to know where your band director got that comparison. The only similarity between the two is that they both sound beautiful XD
Lovely stuff. The oboe family has come a long way since the aulos and the shawm.
That's for sure!!!
Excuseme! May i know which model of English Horn you are using? It sound very warm.
It is a Loree Professional Cor anglais, purchased new in 1994. Thanks for asking!
wow my band director said that an engish horn is like a big french horn but its more like a big oboe! lol
i play the oboe and i really want to learn how to play the enlish horn but my band teacher doesnt have one!! anybody know where i can get one???
I don't know, sorry
BEAUTIFUL! I can't wait to play this peice for S&E if its available what key is it in? (concert pitch)
F!
i play oboe and my teacher said If I wanted to switch to e horn I could. Should I?
well i bought my own english horn 2 weeks ago , im enjoying a lot it sound. ofrmeis easier to play than oboe
@jemimalamb78 Since my last comment, I've discovered another beautiful member of the oboe family: the oboe d'amore. I like it more than the regular oboe too, but about equal to the English horn. I think the regular oboe has a better upper range than these two, though, if I'm not mistaken.
A transposing instrument?
@SouthpawdShredder Feeling a bit nervous that he's a band director...
Wow, beautiful sound! I play the french horn, but english horn sounds better!
@ctk530 well tenor, but yes
I'm a trombone player, but I've always wanted to play English Horn...
@SouthpawdShredder And if he said that, he should take a few more music classes. I am a Junior (2 years away from graduation) and I am a music major and I can honestly tell you that the English Horn sounds NOTHING like a big French Horn. Do you play one or does your band director play one?
The oboe is overrated. The English horn is where it's at. :)
(The heckelphone is awesome too.)
Anyway, this was very, very well-performed.
@SouthpawdShredder You should be careful about what that particular band director tells you!
@MaestroTJS oooh be careful with this comment..some cor players are oboist too!!!
a cor anglais sounds a lot like an oboe
Althea's playing shows a lovely sense of understanding at the deepest level. However, the piano (even on short stick) accompanying it doesn't. It sometimes tries to dominate. Handel did not have a concert grand!
your band director clearly knows nothing about double reeds e-e
Sounds nothing like a French horn. ONLY BETTER!
