    That’s crazy . I think they have always been there . Here in Panama City Florida we have. Had several white sharks caught off the beach . They used to never be seen in the Gulf of Mexico. Only after the oil spill did we start seeing them more .

    Big beautiful creatures of the ocean....Curious lot; they feel things with the mouth....you might’ve gotten a little love squeeze but then released soon, as you weren’t the proper food. Cheers to a great introspect edit 👍

    Thanks so much Luke! I saw 4 Hammerhead sharks feeding while I was on the water. Totally freaked me out but they weren’t interested in me thankfully. So beautiful to see ❤

    Luke, thank you! Thank you! Thank you!
    It's so important that people understand that sharks are not mindless killers! First, there is only a handful of shark species known to have attacked humans at all (yes, obviously the great white being one of them) Second, there is no correlation between the number of sharks out there and the number of attacks on humans. None! I've been with and around sharks in the water many times and they turn out to be very shy. Actually even when there is a great white (or a tiger shark, bull shark etc.) out there and you go out surfing or kitesurfing none the less, the chance of it attacking you is far less than getting hit by a car crossing an average street one a regular day!
    On a side note: a friend of mine almost got killed by a dolphin when they collided in 15 foot surf (the dolphin broke 6 of his ribs) Makes you think, no?

      People are obnoxious creatures and rarely respect life in general. All they care about is how they can get the most out of their short lives themselves. No respect for wildlife and not even for their own kind, they're destroying everything they touch and everywhere they go.
      The last couple generations went from bad to worse but there's a slither of hope with the next generation. They seem to care much more about the environment they live in and social behaviour.

    I agree with your comments Luke. I’ve spent plenty of my life in the ocean (I’m 64) from before dawn until after dark. As a leg rope less surfer & a long way offshore windsurfer in what are now considered seriously sharky waters. When I’ve seen a fin or someone else has, I’ve immediately left the water & always would. As a kiter I concentrate my attention on the riding challenges & pleasure & figure there’s no place for paranoia. In the statistically highly unlikely event of my being a shark’s lunch, death would most likely come quickly in proportion to the lifetime of pleasure I’ve enjoyed with the ocean. I do prefer to be a moving target than a sitting one these days 🌊👍

    We had someone bit by a shark. Had to get 30 stiches. 30 minutes before he was resting out in the ocean with his kite in the air. Someone went out to him abd he said he was taking a break. 30 min later they see the same thing and noone went out because they thought he was takin a break. Somone was going by him and he was yelling for help. Tied his kite to a crab bouy and came in. Shark bit him and let go. He is still kiting in the same spot. Had a 11 foot hammerhead pass me diving and didnt even look at me for a second. They are out there but they arent interested in killing. They might bite out of fear or confusion but I guess its like getting hit with bird shit. You gotta be in the wrong place at the wrong time. I try not to go crazy when treading water so if the shark is there its not scared. Maybe you should nake noise so it knows. Idk but be safe and stay around other people to help just in case a shark bites your leg and you can't swim in.

    I totally agree with you, and I think that most of the people I kite and surf with do as well. However, as you stated in your video the media greatly exaggerates the danger of sharks and being in the water with them, only when there is a siting, and does not address the fact that in reality they are there the majority of the time. This translates into the majority of people thinking sharks are mainly out to eat people if you are in the water with a shark nearby. So, its always refreshing to hear this opinion from other people, especially on the internet.
    Shred on everyone!

    We had a dead whale wash in to Port Adelaide and get snagged just on the other side of a Seawall, we were about 20 kiters scooting around. Feeding on the dead whale carcass were 3 great whites! No one even knew until later that night when it was on the news. 😂 Straya

    best to stay on your board and keep moving at all times...screwing footstraps on my directional tomorrow....good to add in a leash and a 'sharkeye' sticker on the belly when the ipone app is pinging a white tipper..

    Wow that's a really cool bouy system, I gotta check if we have them here and it's cool that it detects the species, but does it give you any other info on them? It would be better to brag about going kiting with a 5 or 6 meter great white....three tons of 'em hehe

    I ride between 9am to 4h30 max 5 P.M... The shark can eat anytime but mainly they hunt at night.

    • @FlukesKitesurfing
      @FlukesKitesurfing  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey Ke, yes agreed, sharks are more likely to bite in lower light... however i would still like to think a shark biting a person at any time is a mistake and really, they are just minding their own business. To be honest, the more i look at it.. the best way to not get bitten by a shark is to be in the water in areas where there is an abundance of food. if there is a lot of fish for the shark to eat, then they don't bother going after anything else.

      have fun with the sharks... I never and i will never kite in south Africa or Australia and in the US i look the shark migration. I prefer the south and north east of the Caribbean area (rocky and rocal area). and where the water temperature is more hot .. It`s the sharks who decide where i kite... hahahahaha!

    When do you use a leach in the surf?

  • @RalphMelis
    @RalphMelis 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    I think hundreds of millions of years of evolution has probably made sharks intelligent enough to be able to differentiate us from food. After all, humans never get eaten as a whole, they have a piece bitten out of them and then die from blood loss. Seals and other prey disappear as they are completely eaten.
    The incidents that do happen, could be mistakes (in low light conditions as people have said, sharks rely on sight for hunting after all and sound), or a response to a close encounter where you might suddenly find yourself close to a shark and defensive response happens, such as with Mike Fanning in the J-Bay open when a hammerhead got tied up in his leash.

    Can the buoy tell the difference between a kitesurfer and a shark........was it you?
    All joking aside, a honest and balanced assessment acknowledging the shark’s right to exist alongside us.

    I think you're right, they're there all the time and we don't see them. But if you'd stacked it and then been body dragging around for a minute like an injured seal, an investigative bite might have been more likely.
    Maybe you should get a seal-shaped board, really try nail that clip of a near-miss great white breach behind you :D
