    Sublime was a genre fusion band, I love it. Ska, reggae, hip hop, rock, punk. Often imitated, never duplicated.
    In a similar way, I think Rage Against the Machine blends genres: rock, metal, hip hop, funk. Often imitated, never duplicated.

    • @DocRobert
      @DocRobert 3 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      @@mattmaccay2351 I don’t disagree with that statement. I guess I wouldn’t say that Sublime innovated any particular sound, but for me at least they were they ones that found that perfect balance that no one since has quite replicated. I mean... Nirvana certainly didn’t invent grunge. They could never have existed if not for Mudhoney and The Melvins and that whole scene they grew out from. But I do think they were the perfect crystallization of those influences, and for me at least the apex of grunge.
      Also it helps that all of these examples (Nirvana, Sublime, and Rage Against the Machine) vanished suddenly at the height of their popularity (Nirvana and Sublime by the death of their front man, RATM by their breakup). It’s easier to be the king forever if you go out on top. They never had a chance to start releasing crappy albums or grow old and start spewing embarrassing nonsense (I’m looking at you, Billy Corgan). 😀

      @@DocRobert I was a big fan of RATM, but they definitely copied the sound of Urban Dance Squad, who was ahead of their time with their unique sound and came well before RATM. Not knocking RATM, still love them.

  • @Nickel138
    @Nickel138 3 ปีที่แล้ว +103

    This is Ska music, it originates from Jamaican music, but it’s typically a faster beat than Reggae. It’s often played with Punk Rock bands. Sublime mixes Ska, Punk Rock, and Hip-Hop beautifully. There will never be another band like them, imo. Great reaction.

      There is a band similar to them in the same genre from the same time actually haha. Ska is reggae jazz mix. Its first music to include completely race free barriers so it uses black and white checkers and most songs are political. If you wanna go to some good roots, desmond decker. Was sad when he passed away :(

    What kind of music is Sublime? Picture a skater/surfer in Cali was raised on rap and reggae & got really high & decided to form a band. So ... not rock, not rap. Just it's own kind of alternative. I'd pair them up with... 311 I guess. I had skater/surfer friends & we all enjoy Sublime.

      This definition fits best. Its definitely not Ska, but i can hear a few elements on the very few tracks they have with horns. I used to call this genre "Dub Style", but it really has no name. Mixing hiphop with Reggae and Punk Rock mostly from bands out of California. 311, Slightly Stoopid, Goldfinger, Pepper, OPM, even early Incubus to a lesser degree. Sublime just exemplifies a California hood beach town vibe perfectly.

  • @no_nameyouknow
    @no_nameyouknow 3 ปีที่แล้ว +12

    Ya nailed it, Sublime was unique. They didn't have a singular genre and some of their best songs stand on their own even in their own catalogue of music. They don't really have another song like this one, and the same can be said for many of their greatest tracks. Bradly was a musical genius who was unfortunately plagued by an addiction to hereon, like so many others he never escaped that addiction. He was a white boy living in the ghettos of southern cali who came up listening to punk, ska, rock, rap and reggae and you can hear those influences in all his music. RIP to one of gods prototypes.
    Oh and his bass player Eric Wilson played a big part in their vibe too.

    1. Same In the end💚
    2. Smoke 2 joints 🌲🦨🌳
    3. Caress me down 💚
    Sublime is from Long Beach, CA which was in the midst of the Rodney King Riots.
    Bradley is the father of a whole genre. If you like it...I suggest the following bands for you to listen to. (I call it Caliroots or rock reggae)
    Slightly Stoopid
    Rebelution
    Hirie
    Fortunate youth
    Ballyhoo!
    Artikal sound system
    The movement
    The green
    Tribal seeds
    this genre is incredible and overlooked by so many. The musicianship of these artist are amazing. It’s all about good vibes and 🌳 .

    "Where can I hear more music like this?"
    You can't, Sublime is the beginning and end. The alpha and omega. Bradley Nowell died and this genre died with him. Reggae, ska, alternative and rap would be the inspirations I believe

    This song is a testament to history repeating itself. Its about the riots after the verdict was released for Rodney King. As far as I know it was the first video footage released of police brutality against poc. Some guy just happened to have his camcorder out on his balcony. It’s always been my fave sublime song.

    1. Pawn Shop (unapologetically dope AF song
    2. Dont Push (Possibly the single greatest sublime track)
    3. Pass me the Lazer Beam (Sublime covers and re writes a classic reggae refrain)
    From Pittsburgh
    Greatest regret was not seeing Sublime live, I had a chance in the ealry 90s but was just young and I didnt know bout them yet.
    Most of us didnt know about Sublime u til their last album got huge and was played on the radio.
    Before that you had to be plugged into the socal punk scene to know bout em.
    Whats crazy is how many bands and artists I listened to because sublime covered them or took influences from them or wrote dedication songs to:
    KRS-ONE
    Just ICE
    Toots and the Maytals
    The Ziggens
    Minor Threat
    and a bunch more I would never known about without Sublime.
    They are like a musical history lesson when you listen to their music

    So happy to see you react to this! There is only one Sublime. They're considered "Ska" (a mix of rock and reggae) with a heavy hip hop influence.
    What I got - reprise
    Caress me down
    Smoke two joints
    Three more solid Sublime tracks!

    Southern cali ska rock rap, and sublime brought this stuff to the forefront. Bradley Nowell grew up in between SoCal and on his dads boat in Jamaica where he learned true club music

    That day in 92 I was making my regular deliveries in LA around La Cieniga and the 405 and all hell broke loose. I remember the panic in the traffic to get out of the city waiting at an intersection and watching the signal change from green to red multiple times before moving anywhere total gridlock. Then once on the freeway going south back to Anaheim looking left right around Carson where they park the Goodyear blimp, it looked like a war zone with all the plumes of smoke rising in the distance...The 405 has 4 lanes but that night it was 6 , cars traveling on both shoulders of the road...
