Roy "Spook!" Jay on the Bob Monkhouse Show, 1983

  • No, you didn't dream him, he was real. In 1984 he became a regular on The Laughter Show, which made the limitations of his act a bit too obvious. He disappeared off the public radar almost as quickly as he arrived.

This guy got me out of soo much trouble with my Mum! She would be trying to tell me off and I would constantly copy the 'spook' and 'slither' gestures until Mum gave up. First time I have seen his act in decades -thanks for the great memories!!!!

Poor Roy. Talk about 15 minutes of fame. The problem with his act was how new and different it appeared at the time, but once you’d seen it a few times it was already old. Old pub gags told very slowly with the same 2 catchphrases repeated over a musical accompaniment . RIP.

There's an advert for Head & Shoulders (May 2019) the song is Aloe Blacc (a king is born) that samples Vehicle by Ides of March. The horn section got my mind racing ..... strange comedian.... don't know his name..... anything else? ..... suit with arrows?
I typed" Ides of March comedian arrows suit music" found a link, saw his name was Roy Jay and et voilà I'm watching him! Come on the web is something :o)
Now if anyone can remember a song called "the Stanley" It went something like "Come on the Stanley...we can do the Stanley... You can do the Stanley too" It's an incredibly distant memory of TOTP's, I'm sure I haven't made it up, It may take 10yrs but maybe someone involved with the song will read this and reply.... fingers crossed

@@hughjarrse You're welcome mate, glad to help. The Stackridge leader was a guy called Viv Stanshall...an absolute genius who was sought after by almost every band/musicians around. Played on Tubular Bells amongst many, many others. It's him who introduces "grand piano", "bass guitar" etc on Bells.

I think the reason he was popular is that he moved & looked like a live action Looney Tunes character & the jokes were old groaners everyone knew
    So kids copied him
But repeat viewings don’t hold up; not necessarily a problem then as video recorders weren’t that common, but now

    • @danteshydratshirt2360

good point about repeat viewings - i vaguely recalled seeing this act years and years ago so searched on youtube and up this pops. It does tend towards 1 trick pony but IMO its a good trick

Died penniless and all the other Benidorm comedians had a whip around to pay for his funeral. Liked his drugs and drink. Got his vock out on stage one night and was banned from all the hotels so I hear.
Cringe humour. Funny for about as long as his fame. 15 mins.
We did copy his spook and slither at school. For about a week until forgot all about him.
