"Forgotten" from Midori (Shôjo Tsubaki) - Soundtrack Reconstruction

  • This is my attempt at doing a by ear rerecording of the song that plays during the finale of Hiroshi Harada’s 1992 underground classic, Midori. With the initial controversy Midori faced on release, it was said that the masters of the film’s soundtrack were destroyed along with most known 16mm prints. The score was written by J.A. Seazer, an artist who already gained a notable following in the art scene from his collaborations with Shūji Terayama and his Tenjo Sajiki troupe.
This technically isn’t the first time I attempted reconstructing Seazer’s soundtrack, before this I did a set of tracks in early 2017 based on the film’s score as part of my now defunct Vaulting School side-project. I was working in Garageband at the time (a software with a much smaller range in synthesizers), and the reconstruction of the ending theme especially took a blow from my limitations. My deconstruction of the track at the time was also inaccurate, I didn’t put as much time into it as I did the themes accompanying the mutation scene or the opening credits. With this new version I spent a morning to a late afternoon piecing things together note by note, seeing how the song was exactly written to get the closest reconstruction possible, this track was the final result. All the talk of accuracy aside, I couldn't help but put a slight improvisation in the mix by the very end, as the track didn't exactly conclude as much as it faded out with the scene.
    Yes, I am slightly obsessed.

People always say that the movie is disturbing and all. It is, indeed. However, I always found comfort in the uncanny. Maybe because, despite having a way more peaceful childhood than Midori, I always felt lonely and abandoned. This very scene where the members of the carnival laugh at her reminds me of a time when I had not only my life ruined by my so-called friends but was abandoned by them. It was the exact time I found this movie.

Midori's ending is the portrait of all the lifes of miserable people after ww2. They kept living in the expectation that everything would get better some day, and many of them died in poverty, agony and loneliness, hoping to find a new life in the middle of pure destruction and death...

I find it really interesting how even if a there is a similar consistent beat throughout the whole song it still doesnt fail to evoke an eerie feeling. Maybe it's because of how those background clock-like sounds (sorry i dont know music terminology) become faster and faster and then at the end it's just a weak sound until it finally fades? Even if you havent seen the movie or at least the final scene the song still sounds kind of creepy

It's funny that you say that. J.A. Seazer is a highly renowned pioneer of psychedelic rock and folk music with roots back to the 1960s with his collaborative work for Shuji Terayama, a director who is a mainstay in film history for how much he influenced and molded the Japanese film scene. He also cowrote numerous albums throughout the 1970s with popular artists in the folk rock scene. While I'm not much of an anime guy (the only bit of anime media I actively saw outside of Midori was some of Tezuka's work), Seazer also worked on that Revolutionary Girl Utena series that I know a lot of people like. He's still active to this day composing original rock operas.
Maybe next time actually look into the reality of things instead of sensationalist internet rumors. It's like calling John Lennon a psychopath for helping Jodorowsky with the financing and distribution for The Holy Mountain.
