- This is a complete tour of Blackpool Illuminations during the Ride the Lights event on August 31st 2021. I take you all the way from Starr Gate up to Red Bank Road Bispham.
The loud music was coming from DJ Dom Whiting with Drum & Bass on the Bike cyclingmagazin...

Yes I think they ordered a new layer + all new road markings. I caught them finishing it off it in my last livestream.
another good video well presented but i think they were a lot better show in the 60's and 70's .
Although it’s great to see ‘Blackpool doing well, I think the lights are disappointing to what they used to be, Stephen.
That is true.
When I visited in the early 1980's the lights were cups and saucers with a teapot pouring tea in them in the way of lights.
Also what as happened to the old beautiful lit up trams 🤔
I have to agree .. I've seen them many times over the last few years but I never recall being absolutely blown away by them like I was in 1993
@@booth2710 LED lights, although being energy efficient do not have that big bulb night filling presence about them.
I’ve got pictures of the Tower when it had the Pepsi & Fanta branding. I think it looked better then. One good thing about the LEDs is that they perform programmed displays to match up with the Lightpool Show.
Yeah, I remember holidays with my parents around the 1970 time. The lights back then really were spectacular, seemed the whole of the main stretch really was lit up, the trams were literally like giant light bulbs on tracks!. Went back again for the illuminations around the 2006 time and remember feeling like it wasnt half as good. Good watching these vids though, I can tell Stephen is very proud of his local area and roots and I applaud him for that.
I had not heard of Ride the Lights before now and what a fantastic idea it is. I have to agree with David though, that the illuminations were more luxuriant in the 70s.
blackpool light they are ok but don’t look any thing special like they did in the 1980s it’s like the sparkles not there like it did years ago or less it’s my age now lol thanks for the video s keep up the good work
Yes agreed back in the 80s and 90s the displays used to be spectacular. Now the lights look sparse. Also I've mentioned in a comment that from Gynn Square to Bispham they used to have lighted scenes all along the grass verges next to the sea side. These appear gone now. I was surprised that Stephen didn't mention this as they were an exciting part of the lights. All looks dull now to be honest. I was thinking of making a trip to see the lights but they are not good now sadly. Just my opinion.
Just come back from Blackpool the lights looked beautiful at night especially the piers all lit up. Well done for the video once again.

I will admit, there is improvement as there are more colours and animation in the lights but the lack of theming is very disappointing. They seriously need to add more themes and not use the same lights over and over.
Plus the Beaverbrooks Jewellery lights have got to go.

That was absolutely fantastic Stephen, as always you have put a huge amount of work into the video. You gave so much information as you were going along, I loved every minute, I actually watched it twice it was so good, I didn't want it to end. Came up from wales to do it got in 3am had a blast, recommend to all ages.

Left 12 midday got up just before 6pm left 10ish and got home 3am, 560 miles plus starr gate and back then to tower so bout 15miles on bike, my arse bone hurts after all the sitting down.
Brilliant Stephen, would have loved to ride my electric bike down the prom with them all. But will be in St Annes on Saturday and in Bar 15. Keep up the good work your knowledge makes the videos great💫👍

Been to Blackpool Since I've been a Young Child from School Trips to the Present day know the Town So well been up the Tower Once I love North Pier and Central been to the Bloom Bar love it in there and Coral Island When I was a young lad I remembered a Old Joke And Magic Shop I think near the Manchester put can't quite remember my brother always was in there, and there been so many changes I now stay at Viking or The Claremont been to the Cliffs some of the show do bring back so many memories, I have you throught about doing a Visit to Fleetwood Just an Idea.

Well that saves me from going to see the lights in my convertible. The lights were very poor.....there use to be more than that....I'm disappointed Blackpool 😡👎. Great video mate and you did a great job on the running commentary. I think Blackpool has now lost its Gooden age forever. 😢😢😢

Brilliant Ride the lights am watching and you're just passed the Tower and passing Pappas fish and chips..One of them as just opened in Skegness couple of weeks ago when I was there..but coming Blackpool October.. you just passed the only hotel on the promenade..
I had some good time at Yates wine bar & they all been good one's no bad one's every year we went to Blackpool such,great time , getting older now ,can't move a bout a lot ,But all way will remember good time.
Your blackpools ambassador or maybe even Boris Johnson.you should be switching the lights on in fact your just as famous as Boris to people that go to blackpool

Very good video. My favourite so far. I would love to ride along that stretch and see the lights, especially as it was closed to traffic.
I stayed in the Savoy Hotel in 1999 with my late partner (he sadly passed away 6 years ago). We had a lovely stay in that hotel, I don't know what it's like now. We went to see Joe Longthorne at the North Pier.
@@pattij2961 Thanks Patti J. I have heard the same about the Metropole. I don't know what it was like when Butlins owned it, the same I think. It is not a very imposing hotel from the outside.

@@pattij2961 Thanks Patti J. I didn't know that the Savoy was owned by Brittania. When we stayed in it in 1999 I quite liked it but I have heard bad things about it since then.

Maybe well b4 your time Stephen but that place opposite the Metropole used to be a cinema. I can remember my mam taking me there to see Star Wars. Cocker Street baths was used by schools up north shore for their swimming classes when it was compulsory to teach all Blackpool children. 👍
It is before my time, but I saw it on another video by Blackpool and Beyond and I think I should do a history video on it. I never actually realised it used to be a cinema.

I remember Lewis's - with all the product demonstrations, the black and white building next to the lifeboat station and yes, I remember the open air pool too - and just how cold the water was in the said open air pool. Once experienced, never forgotten!! There are old family pics of beauty parades in there too, which must mean I've been there and not frozen to death - or at least, not from being in the pool at any rate... I also remember going with the whole family to the Derby Baths, so that we could get a shower, 'cos our holiday flat only had a sink... I even remember when Woody's was the Princess Cinema (ABC) - I remember seeing one of the On the Buses films there when it was on first release - the one where Olive drives the motor bike though the foam... And, what I do remember is an awful lot more trams than there are now - five or six waiting their turn on the Pleasure Beach circle alone... Ah well, such is progress - and it's nice to know people still go there!
I loved "On the buses". The characters were some of the best in sitcoms, along with "Dad's Army" and "Only Fools and Horses". I remember the one where Olive rides the bycycle through the foam. Priceless!

Now i live down in Bristol but being a manchester / ashton under lyne lad not been to Blackpool Iluminations in yrs and i think the las time i came to Blackpool was after 2005 when i moved and me and my partner were visiting home for a week ..and as my partner had NEVER been to Blackpool went for a weekend in October ...cold windy ( as allways lol) but enjoyed it and went to funny girls ect ....sadly not been back only because we cant come visit my family toghether as have caring duties at home 1st for his dad and now for his mum ,,my folks aint seen my other half in over 5 yrs due to that ..also he was working and i wasnt ( i was doing the caring) so it all hinged on him getting time off ect now hes retired and obv looking after his mum who is 90 and has Alzhimers ect we still cant come up to visit my family and my fave resort ( obv it is as where i spent MANY childhood holidays cause we couldn't afford to go abroad ect) ...SO keep up the great work and i have subbed to the channel as it's great and also keeps me informed on how much Blackpool has and is changing!

Brilliant video... good quality .. good audio but the Blackpool lights seem slimmed down now compared to the 60s and 70s .... you seem to know a lot about

e scooters are illegal. Plod should be there seizing them. They are for off road use but this country has long gone to the dogs. How many of those cyclists are local? , as in within 15 miles? Just a thought. Craig y don means rock of the wave . Good idea to not have it live as my connection is poor and often drops out. Really good . Your videos should be on TV, better than many on BBC.
