    Having now completed every lock in the house i can say I found a better way of doing this. A blade and sandpaper. I used a blade to scrape away most of the layers of paint. Leaving only two of three. Then wet sanding it back to the black japanning (what I first though was paint.) with high git sandpaper. Its time consuming but I was left with a perfect black finish without the scapes or groves shown when I finished this lock.
    I have also obtained keys for these locks so they are all working like new again :)

    I liked your approach towards the patina and history of the lock. Seeing the different layers removed before getting to the fixture was very satisfying, and I'd like to see more non-phone restoration/repair on your channel.

      I have always loved most of his repairs and restoration; I will never forget his works on some iPod Classic restorations; I believe it is good to go on a variety of different restorations, though technology restoration should not be ignored but as I said, the mixture will be spicy, and people will love it.
      Thanks, Hugh.

      My attic door has an old skeleton key lock on it.
      I was able to remove it & buy a key online that fit it & clean it up & use it once again.
      It's awesome to give new life to something like that.

    Very nice! Henry and Thomas Vaughan joined together to form H&T Vaughan in 1856. They eventually became the largest lock makers in Willenhall (Staffordshire, close to Wolverhampton). By the way, locks of this type (not of the same quality though) are still available in DIY stores in the UK 😊

    Hi 😎 It's nice that you renew such antiques, I know a few people who throw away such wonders remembering the old ages. I renovated an old cupboard, probably 100 years old, and removed several layers of oil paints. Instead of chemicals, I used a heat gun and it worked out much better and sewed better than the sticky road of steaming chemicals. Cheers and until next time!!!

    I understand branching out into other restoration areas, but I watch your videos to better understand the tech we use everyday. I know you can only restore phones, tablets, and wearables for so long, but there’s other everyday tech items we use that could be restored/repaired. Printers, computers, mouses, keyboards, tvs, cameras, robot vacuums, smart home devices etc.

    When I was a kid, we used to live in this really old house in Kew (Melbourne, Victoria) that was built in the 1870s. And it had these brass locks on each door. Instead of being painted black, they were all shinny brass covered in a lacquer coat to preserve the shine. It looked so cool.
    As a suggestion, why not take all the paint off and coat the locks and strike plate with black japan? It'd be period correct (as black japan was used a lot at the turn of the last century) and would look awesome.

    I think you did a beautiful job in restoring that lock.
    We was restoring a very old church organ in Cambridge years ago. Although the screws had to be replaced as they had become fragile. We coated the top of the new screws with oil, then using a blow lamp to remove the top layer, so it would look old.

      Well well well, didn’t expect to see you here haha. Cool to see that you were salvaged some of these old door locks, from long abandoned properties I assume? • @HughJeffreys
      @HughJeffreys  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thanks mate! I have discovered they are coated in something called "japanning" I have purchased the required materials to do it so might re-coat this one. But got plenty throughout the house to do.

    • @thewatchworks1372
      @thewatchworks1372 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@HughJeffreys It was really neat to see you bring that old lock back to life. In old homes, I tend to like originality, and hardware definitely counts in my books. It’s sad whenever people replace nice original antique hardware with modern junk to be honest. And yes, japanning was a very common method of protecting metal on household goods from I would say the 1800s all the way up until the early 1900s, it’s on just about anything old appliance or hardware related that doesn’t have an otherwise different metal or paint finish. I like it because it is relatively durable and looks good (when in good condition)

    The cardboard was put there to make lock quieter when the slide bolt is sprung back when the door is closed, and the lock was originally painted with a black Japan finish, sometimes if the paint is chipped you can lightly clean off the rust and then apply perma blue which will stain the metal black and give it a nice aged finish

    Hey Hugh - Locksmith here.
    The internal parts of the lock case in your circumstance wouldn't be better served by graphite. Realistically, it should only be used in pin tumbler style cylinders.
    Most lever locks like this should be oil lubricated lightly and cleaned of any excess before reassembly.
