dacryphillia sounds so much more… *explicit* than what it actually is lmao
it's kinda funny bc if you broke it into parts then it'd be da cry philia, which is surprisingly succinct of a definition lmao...it is in fact da cry philia

The second I saw it as a tag I googled it

i heard a story about someone who used to write a spirited away fic when they were twelve, and someone requested them to add lemons in it. so they added a part in the fic where a goose was carrying lemons past the main character and yelled, 'MY LEMONS!'
they published it and forgot about it until a few years later they looked back at it and figured out what the person had ACTUALLY wanted.
so they basically accidentally trolled someone and i thought it was the funniest thing ever

I once wrote a fanfic about two different protagonists from different books bonding over their trauma, and in my infinite naivety, I tagged it as 'Trauma Bonding' not knowing that it's actually a term for a victim forming a bond with their abuser.

I thought frottage was a type of art technique (which, it actually is. Its just rubbing lead or whatever on a textured surface to create a textured piece of art) but nope. I should have known it was something else in fanfiction universe.
I think you’re thinking of filigree.

@@PantherCat64 nope it's called frottage. I know cuz I'm an art student and it was a technique I had to learn a few years ago because we were studying the artist who created the technique, Max Ernst.
Like you are not wrong but how you wrote your post one would think it is fanfiction-specific term, which it reaaaaaally isn't. It is very common word from the area of non-penetretive sex. Something that is heavily encouraged when teens are just discovering how they feel about being physical with someone, or adult ppl are meeting someone but things are not that far yet, and definitely as a part of foreplay.

Way back when I started reading fanfiction, I saw a fic that was an xreader with "somnophilia" mentioned in the opening author's note. Yeah, I think after reading fanfiction for long enough you end up desensitized to a lot of kinks. I was surprised by stuff when I was younger. Nothing is shocking anymore. There's stuff I'm not into and wish I didn't know about, but I'm not surprised it's a thing.
Yeah. I mean I’m a whole adult with an extremely dirty mind. If these bothered me outside the specific contexts of a lot of these people initially expected? I’d be shocked.
The internet always exaggerates how bad anything is. If the majority of people in a given thread think it's the worst thing they've ever laid their eyes upon, it's usually like two steps past vanilla. For anyone wondering - whump is a trope where a character's pain or distress is the main focus. It can be different types, emotional pain, physical pain, psychological distress etc. Often comes with comfort at the end as well, overlaping with hurt/comfort trope. It ranges from more innocent stuff like sickfics, characters going through something stressful in their lives, all the way to the most hardcore stuff like torture, assault, death etc.

Comes from slang usage in English that no doubt was originally carrying a "their slave" connotation and used to be jokingly lobbed at men who weren't terribly assertive with their wives. I think the usage is less snide when used by fandom though, since old school IRL folks were trying to imply the men weren't "tough enough" to stand up to a woman, while fandom tends to use it affectionately, focusing more on the characters' acual feelings, and characters themselves use it kinda ruefully like "ugh, I have it SO BAD for them". The dead dove tag shouldn’t actually contain any surprise content. Dead dove: do not eat is meant to say “you see the stuff in the tags? You see the twisted things I put there? Yeah that’s all in the fic, what you see is what you get.” But lately people have just been using it to say “there is messed up stuff in here, but I’m not telling you what it is!” Which is literally the exact opposite of what the tag was made for
At 11, I read a smutfic on Wattpad because it wasn't labeled. I then proceeded to go read an entire book of Y/N lemons, because I didn't know what "Lemon" meant and kept reading through hoping the sex scene would end in a bit.
They were HTTYD fics...
Three years later I now read the most horrifyingly disturbing fics I can to build up my fear and disgust tolerance.
2:59 oh, that reminds me when I anonymously put my short horror story in the school’s newspaper. I put a warning saying that it contained body horror, but nobody knew what it was so they read it anyway.
when i first heard of whump i thought it was some sort of porn thing. the exact opposite problem everyone in this video had.
THE NOISES ON 🐓⚽️TORTURE IM CRYYYING OMG
I’ve rarely had issues, mostly because I a have a few friends in the furry community who’ve seen it all and more already and have helped preserved my innocence for a little longer.
Which still wasn’t long but at least had a better idea what to avoid
Opposite here, as a furry I tell my nephew what tags to avoid... And he immediately looks them up
@@justaperson4656 To be fair, I got my furry friends after I graduated high school.
Meaning I knew there was weird crap on the internet before hand, just haven't seen or known specifics, and I got some nice people more mature than me who could be my advisers to prevent scarring.
Your nephew on the other hand... I don't know.
@@PantherCat64 he's in highschool ATM, and is a pretty curious guy. If there's ever anything he doesn't understand, he'll ask, and that extends to fandom culture. He asked what an ao3 tag was, and I explained to the best of my abilities, further saying to Google any tags you come across before reading to not traumatise yourself like I did with omegaverse. He then decided to look up omegaverse... On TH-cam
Someone in my neighborhood found out their kid read fanfiction on ao3 and thought e stood for everyone. She made her kid read a smut fic _out_ _loud_ to prove that fanfiction is evil and that her kid shouldn’t be reading it. Meanwhile it turned out her kid had never read smut (they actively avoided because they were a kid and didn’t want to read it). I think the kid’s traumatized from that. Oh yeah, the kid was in middle school.
Can they not click the big red E and SEE WHAT IT FUCKING MEANS?!
@@1leon000 Exactly! And the kid tried to explain but their mom decided that they were lying (even though they tried to show her the different ratings)
"Dead dove do not eat"
....☠️🥲🥲🥲🥲❤
For me it was "rimming". Not really traumatizing, more like "I don't know what this tag means, but I'm sure it's fine. What- alright then".
Also "gore". That did traumatize me a little bit. I just wasn't prepared.
“Dead dove do not eat? Isn’t that a meme?”
It was infact, not a meme
What is it I don’t want to find out the hard way
@@Blazzyistrying it basically means “anything goes” the things you’ll find could range from explicit horrific r*pe scenes to the goriest gore you’ll find
@@supergachastudios9730 I nearly read a fic with that once, thanks so much for telling me
@@Blazzyistrying no worries bud
@@Blazzyistrying Technically it means "It is excactly what reads in the tin" meaning that you have to pay attention to all the tags, they are "all caps" basically. If there's "gore" in tags, it's going to be gore, some really really nasty gore.
I'm foreign only knew the word Scat from the scatman song and scatcat from the aristocats....
ah yes the Schrödinger's cbt
For a while I was too intimidated by "Dead Dove: Do Not Eat" to look it up. I imagined it to be some kind of SCP-creepypasta where people get the inexplicable urge to eat dead doves and then terrible things happen
Younger me who was v new to ao3 did not ever read the tags, I think the worst one that I was not ready for bcuz i didnt read the tags, was the dsmp passerine fanfic, it broke me. So much angst, was not ready for the major character death. That was my lesson to read the tags I suppose.
As a person who PURPOSEFULLY stayed away from that fic because I heard how angsty it was, o7 my friend
O7 my dude, I've stayed away from Passerine bc I hate heavy angst.
I started reading it but never finished cause I can’t read that much angst…also I’m pretty sure that fic has the mist kudos compared to all of the fics in the Dsmp fandom tag
Back when lemon was the most widely accepted term when referring to a smut fic, a friend of mine and I both had our little middle school innocences shattered by accidentally reading extremely graphic erotica. Mine was labeled in such a way that I thought the fic was called Lemon and was expecting something about maybe one character smelling like lemons or making lemon flavored food, and my friend, and I shit you not, thought that a, “Lemon fic,” was a type of angst with a sour ending. We were so niave-
I once found a fic with like 130 chapters, it was pretty popular, had no ships, angsty af, just what i was looking for right?
it WAS just what i was looking for, i just forgot to check the tags...... maybe i wouldn't have read it if i had seen the multiple tags referencing torture,,,, that fic was really good but traumatized me so badly i have arachnophobia now vvfhjfsdjkk
I understood like a solid 38% of the words spoken in this video
Good. You still have innocence. Keep it that way.
The things I've witnessed...
The things I've wrote...
I didn’t know what a “sparkle wolf” was and assumed it was some kind of magical kemonomimi. (I was pubescent and just starting to consume lemons and such because What If My Parents Walked In While I Was Watching Porn, so, like, I went in expecting sex- between humans)
A sparklewolf is not a human with wolf ears and a tail. And so I first learned about canine knotting with actual dogs, and also there was character bashing.
“Major character death? Amphibia? Oh, this happens in canon. It’ll be fine.”
It was not fine. I am now terrified of the major character death tag 👍
(Fic was called Green tile blue tile on ao3 btw. Ouch)
I never read in that tag unless the author says who dies in the tags, sometimes I’ll read it for like the DSMP where they lose their cannon lives, but I avoid it as much as possible
I can't find it, but I'm preeetty sure I read it at some point, because I love Amphibia angst fics. On that note, anything above a T in the Amphibia fandom (and AO3 in general) is an inmediate "nope" from me ever since I got scarred from a certain rated M angst fic from that fandom.
Man, the Amphibia authors are mostly not okay, huh-
5:10 the chicken sound was perfect for that if yk
It isnt exactly "misundertood", but when i started reading horror fanfic i never tought it was going to be so brutal. I didnt expect at all to be worse than movies and animations of horror and other disturbing stuff. The amount of description people put into one action makes me shiver and at one moment puke.
I don’t think I’ve ever had this moment. But the fact that I understood what everything meant……
Freakin' same. If nothing else, fanfic has led me to discover I have a terrifyingly high tolerance for extremely effed/cursed writing but zero tolerance for effed/cursed viewable media...
Not super awful, but I remember finding a hanahaki fic before I knew what hanahaki meant. My thought was "Oh, it must be a ship name". I was subsequently very confused as to why one of the characters was coughing up flowers.
0:53 i started laughing uncontrollably- I remember when I first saw the lemon tag on wattpad... and read it...

Yeah, our dog had puppies with a neighborhood stray and our parents had to explain wtf was going on 😂
When I first heard of knotting in fan fiction, my first thought was bestiality, so it ended up NOT being as bad as I thought 😂
I personally have avoided "Dead Dove: Do Not Eat" mostly because i fear i can not handle it. I still have not read one labled with dead dove
Edit: read my first dead dove today. Not as bad as I expected it to be. If anyone's interested, it's Curiosity Mentally Scarred the Cat.
I fell into the trap of thinking it would be okay as long as it wasn't tagged dead dove. I was... mistaken.
@@dreamystone yeah that happens sometimes. I was reading one and wondered "how the heck isn't this tagged dead dove?"
What _is_ dead dove?
@@mimisezlol"Dead dove: do not eat" is a fanfiction tag signifying that the content and subjects within will be completely non-ironic, taken seriously, and (usually) very explicit. Basically, if you see a fic with the tags "DD: DNE" and "Inc/st", you are going to get a fanfic that fetishizes, well, inc/st. It's basically saying "What you see is what you get"
@mimisezlol Basically really, really dark and disturbing topics.
it took me a really long time to connect the term "watersports" to what the definition is
when i first saw the tag "watersports" i thought it was like water polo
it was not like water polo
also I did kind of understand that Dead Dove was like bad stuff that the other doesn't condone and it's like heavy shit, but i had to look that up
I was a sweet, innocent child who didn't read any warnings, like really, and who didn't understand how relationship tags works. I just wanted to read stories with characters I liked, and nothing could stop me from it. So, it wasn't good to me. In one day, I found a fic with two brothers, whose names were written with slash. And oh my god, this one fic changed the trajectory of my life forever, because it's a freaking explicit incest.
I will never forget what was inside this fic
This video made me look up a list of fanfiction terms and boy did I learn a lot
3:35 oh my sweet sweet summer child. Get ready for tortures unimaginable by people outside whump community
i was like nine or ten years old and found a wattpad fic tagged with lemon. not knowing what it was, i clicked on it. i still don't quite know what it is tbh [i don't read anything except for fluff and angst]. speaking of angst, i didn't know what it meant when my friend sent me a fic. life changed forever
2:49 LMAO! Didnt expect to see mk here, Especially mk4
The pic fits to ig
Ok, but how do you accidentally click on one of those more… *cough cough* explicit fics? THERE’S LITERALLY A BRIGHT RED E ON THE TOP.
For me, I accidentally read one of those scenes (not all the way through) with a Reece/Cyrus from animal crossing. I was just trying to find out if in canon they were married or siblings (during new leaf era, before new horizons wedding event) and… clicked on a fic with the two of them… and didn’t know what was going on until I got far into it. 😐
That last one about cbt is very relatable.
“Light Dub-con? Ehh, that’s fine. I can take a little dub-con.”
It was not dub-con. It was just 🍇.
If it was 🍇 then why the hell was it tagged as Dub-con? That's non-con
@@bethanydemars2230
No clue at all. In fact, that’s what I was wondering. The consent was in no way dubious, it was nonexistent. Clearly non-con, but wasn’t rated that way. Guess that’s the risk you take reading fanfic off of Tumblr.

"Omorashi? Is that a type of OMORI AU?"
I was once searching for Percabeth fics and one of them was tagged “strap-on” I did not have any idea of what it might mean, but I decided to read the fic anyways. I just remember being so confused for the first hundred words until I discovered what “strap-on” meant.
Not quite realted to fanfic but when I was younger I thought "Lemon" was some kind of artstyle.... now hear me out, that word would always appear under fanarts of characters and it would have a certain 'glossy' look to it idk how to describe it... so I thought that that was what it meant, I even searched it up a few times like "Character A x Character B Lemon" or "Character C and Character D Lemon" but I suprisingly didn't find anything too scarring, there was some nsfw for sure but at that point I had been on the internet long enough to have seen a fair share of that so I didn't think anything of it
So I went on believing that "Lemon" was a certain type of aesthetic for art.... until I found out years later what it actually meant, oh boy (also keep in mind english is not my first language, which certainly didn't help)
Iirc, ironically, "lemon" was borrowed as a slang term by the anime/manga/gaming community, from Japanese (apparently "remon" meant "sexy"? And the Japanese don't have a true "r" or "L" sound be rather something in between, so while Japanese words with that consonant sound are usually romanized with an "r"... sometimes you'll get it with "L"). It spread from there, but the Japanese origin can't have helped people understand it better lol.
Lemons are of course, in English also a type of citrus fruit, known for its intense sourness, so this also led to people referring to erotixally inclined but less explicit fics as "limes" (a somewhat milder flavored citrus, less intense) and thus we have "the Citrus Scale".
Fun fact by the way: citrus is one of the easiest fruit plants to get to hybridize, cross-breed, graft etc, with other fruit plants, leading at least one botanical expert I know to call it "the sluttiest fruit".
So you know. I don't think it was intentional, but associating citrus with sexual content is in fact oddly appropriate 😂
