In this episode Edward Stow discusses the parallels between the very public mistakes made by the police in the recent and tragic Nicola Bulley case, and the way the police behaved during the Jack the Ripper murders. Edward Stow specifically examines the resignation of the Commissioner of the Metropolitan Police Sir Charles Warren and an important interview given by Inspector Helson of Bethnal Green's J Division of the Metropolitan Police after the murder of Polly Nichols. It is vital to comprehend what Helson said in this interview to be able to understand what happened during the police investigation in the vital first few days after this murder... and of course this has a huge impact upon the case against Charles Lechmere, in showing that he is easily the best suspect to be the man known to history as Jack the Ripper.
With thanks to Mike Pemberton for the colourisation of the Charles Lechmere photograph.

Tragic accident, nothing more. She certainly wasn't murdered and despite the apparent medical issues I don't believe she commited suicide. I don't think it's humanly possible to lay down in a shallow river and deliberately put one's head under to then take enough breaths to drown yourself. As she adored the dog I doubt she would have taken it with her had she planned to end her own life especially when there are so many easier other ways to commit suicide.
My theory is this.... she sat on the bench to engage in the works call. Willow was running free and somehow got into some sort of difficulty making Nicola jump from the bench. As she ran to Willows aid she bent to grab the dog and lost her footing on the rather sleep and uneven bank. She fell head over heels and banged her head on the river bed rendering herself unconscious. Head down she subsequently drowned.

Fascinating and well presented, Edward. I am not familiar with the area where Nicola disappeared so in the beginning of it, I did a bit of online research. One thing that I came across was extraordinary. 45 years ago to the day that Nicola vanished, a man did as well in the same exact spot. Sadly, he was found 2 months later. It was also considered peculiar at the time that it took so long to find him. You approached Nicola's story with such care. It is such a tragedy. Prayers that her family is coping best as they can.

That river is not the tranquil image you see underwater, it is treacherous and extremely difficult to search. In this situation due to risk and resource you are better off waiting for the elements to release her body and place spotters down the river, which is exactly what they did.

Apparently, the alleged 'last photo of Nicola' where she put Willow into the boot of the car and went for a walk, was not Nicola. This woman photographed that the Police claim was Nicola, was actually her 'friend' Emma. She has a garnet type ring on her right hand which clearly is shown in the photo, and which she hid during interviews. She wore a blue coat, either like Nicola's or was Nicola's, and then took the dog for a walk. Did Nicola actually take her children to school that day, or was it Emma? Nicola has falsely been accused of depression and alcoholism. This needs to be investigated further. Also, as Nicola's body was not found, even after several searches of the river, did the autopsy reveal that she died of drowning, and more importantly, was it the same water as the river water? There needs to be an investigation into Nicola's suspicious death. Nicola needs justice.

    • @patti9740
      @patti9740 ปีที่แล้ว +4

It was confirmed that Nicola took her children to school as she had a conversation with another parent at the school. One also must realise that these children who are not toddlers have been supported by family liaison officers so if their mother had not taken them to school it would have been revealed. An autopsy has been carried out by a coroner who is independent and an inquest has been opened which is normal in the UK if the person has not been attended by medical people in the weeks preceding death, if there was a question of foul play it would have been referred to the CPS.

    • @almklit
      @almklit 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

That's a mistaken assessment, it clearly was Nicola, the so called ring was just small spot of the colour of the car poking through slightly open fingers as she pulled down the boot.

Folks, the case for Lechmere being the killer is really quite simple. In short, if the killer was someone else, Mizen would have seen him exiting onto Baker St. Lechmere would have probably seen or heard him fleeing toward Baker St. And that's just 1/100 things. As was the case against Lizzie Borden, it simply could not have been anyone else. What's so difficult to understand about that?

The more time goes on I wonder if Nicola walked off, disturbed by something negative she heard on the teams call. (interesting that her Facebook Mortgage page is still live) The official verdict seemed to deliberatley push towards an accidental death, however the evidence for this seemed weak and biased, I suggest there was a conspiracy to protect the name of Nicola by the Police and judiciary to save face and also as a favour to the family as a type of apology, there view, nothing good will served by telling the truth in so protecting her children and the families name going forward.

If PC Mizen thought PC Neil had sent the two men to him after finding the body he surely must have thought it strange that they are not mentioned in the account of PC Neil or Inspector Helson. It's true that we are talking about different divisions but it hardly breeds confidence especially as Paul is intially fobbed off. There is also a discrepancy. Inspector Helson gives a beat time of about twelve minutes yet PC Neil states he had last passed that spot thirty minutes earlier. So either his beat took over twice as long (on at least one occasion) or he was somewhere else. I'm wondering if the practice of knocking people up for work was the reason his beat took longer.

    • @thehouseoflechmere9407

Thank you Mr. Stow. Well narrated and most interesting.
But isn’t it rather strange that Paul’s “Remarkable Statement”, only appeared two days after the interview in Lloyd’s Weekly Newspaper?
The interview must have been quite newsworthy, not to say sensational in its capacity of criticizing the police’s way of handling the case.
But perhaps Lloyd’s chose to believe the police’s official version that PC Mizen was the first man to find the body.
What I find somewhat remarkable is that Paul, who seem to have had a profound dislike for the police, voluntarily imbedded himself in the investigation, and moreover implicated himself. I mean, today Paul, and even more so Lechmere, would be considered persons of interest by the police.

I think you can be pretty sure that the police statements in the Nicola Bulley case were produced with the consent and approval of the family. Maybe at the behest of the family, to damp down press speculation, and prepare the ground for her body being found in the water, which must have seemed to them the most likely outcome. In their position, that's what I would have done. If you suspect that your loved one has taken her life, the last thing you want is for her name to be in the headlines day after day, with speculation about kidnaps etc.
And yes, Lechmere delayed coming forward. But so did Robert Paul. If their story was true, then as far as they were concerned, they had done their bit, reporting the woman to the police officer. It's likely that Robert Paul got a bit of money for his story to the journalist, otherwise he probably wouldn't have said anything either. If I was Lechmere, and I was the killer, I wouldn't have gone to the inquest, unless I was summoned. Why voluntarily put yourself in the frame, if you were guilty? He might have, but it would take huge self-confidence.

Strange you are bringing this up relating to negligence and the Ripper. From the 1880s
I felt Nicola Bulley's case was relevant, concerning and questionable ...
Given the time passed and still Police have gained nothing of any incite in dealing with cases.
I mentioned The Ripper in a long comment, but The Yorkshire Ripper 'Peter Sutcliffe' from 1977
a week or two back about the behaviour of the police and the inconsistencies.
As the ignorance and Narcissism and bloody minded superiority caused many more murders
And in-between these Centuries and decades developing into modern times!
I find Police Corruption invades Moral Integrity and that seems to be the change from 1880s to the present.
So what have the Police learnt?
How to make money from the system while in uniform, or uniform amongst groups - like clans.
How will the Public ever trust the Police when all they show us is contempt and arrogance, bullying and physical abuse. And because they have the word Police written into their job title they believe they can literally get away with their involvement in serious crimes. And sometimes they do literally.
Thanks for the story eloquently presented.
Back in the day of 1800s when the Ripper was feared. It's said there were suspicions a business man made his way to Whitehaven in Cumbria and it was thought he was the ripper but I can't remember the name.
Back then with less facilities and less manpower at least they had tried to do the right thing...
I would hope that would be the same today to do the right thing, but I feel I'm expecting too much!!

Oldfield wasn't misled. He just like the rest were too arrogant and self-indulgent narcissists to listen to anything reported that didn't fit their Narrative... Fixated with the recording, they didn't even have the competence to recognise it was fake and deliberately misleading, and they were told many times that it wasn't their man. So in that time of their superiority many more victims were notched up.
I also knew certain people at that time in the police force and socialised with a few. They're of a different breed, they lack empathy.
I was told off the record his blood group type back in 1979. And another blood group type. Both rare blood types.
I was told too that there was suspicion on an officer that they thought might be responsible and it was been secretly investigated....
Maybe one did attack one woman but the one they were seeking from the tape was a pathetic thrill seeker.
Still my opinions of our National Policing Services throughout the UK won't change until the criminals pay for their crimes we pay wages for them to carry on doing...
Their incompetence and ineptness is unfathomable..Just wearing a Uniform doesn't give them a brain, but we are meant to be obedient no matter how many laws they break.
The system is flawed because the ones in the position of authority are also flawed
I don't trust them and I don't have faith in them.
      They have become more corrupt....
There's much more to the story that was covered up.
And at times not everything is told of the truth. Some is fabricated...
An Example...There was no footage or witnesses that saw Nicola Bulley that Friday morning... But because we are lied to and told these tales and fabrication by The Police we are told we can trust, then we just have to believe the Garbage...
And that tells a story about them !!!
We cannot look up to them and feel confident for them to do the right things.
Andrew Snowden is like a slimy gangster who likes to belittle women like he did Nicola Bulley.
And he is an example of contempt he holds us in!!
We don't want people of his nature in his position to cause harm to ones he's meant to protect

There is one fact that I don't think could be disputed. The equipment used to scan that river was highly sophisticated and would have identified anything as large as a body clear as day unless the body jumped over the weir and travelled at unprecedented speed downstream. The scan was carried out well upstream of the bench. If she committed suicide further downstream the body wouldn't have traveled upstream. This is not conspiracy theory. If this prompts criticism of the police it would seem quite justified.

That is if the killer put one grip on her right shoulder with the left hand, then wrapped the strap around with the right, the circlage could be twisted tight or pulled elbows akimbo to snuff out the life quickly. Pocket the garrote and pull out a blade, and little to no blood spillage

A couple of the victim pictures appear to show what may be thumb marks around the throat so it's not impossible that they came round before he could cut their throat and had to be strangled. Many searchers have stated that it was very unlikely that a large object such as a body would be able to pass the weir, so if she fell into the river, is it more likely she entered further downstream past the weir, which is at odds with the location where the phone and dog were found.
