Best Fix For A Leaking Pond...Maybe. 2 Months Since Damit Treatment.

  • We treated this pond with Damit pond sealer in April of this year, and here's an update on the progress. I am 100% confident that it helped a lot, and probably sealed the area we applied it to completely. But the weather hasn't been cooperating so we still have some work to do to get this challenging pond to FILL...Damit!!!!

We have our fingers crossed that the leak is solved, now we just need some rain to help fill this thing up. The ram pump and propane pump will be used to maintain its level, but to try and actually pump over half a million gallons of water is a tall order! We will let mother nature do that job... Cheers everybody! Have an awesome weekend!

My takeaway is that you either need a lot more reliable rain, or the pond needs to be on/near a creek.

One thing you could try if possible is to let cattle trample and pug up the berm. I haven't tried it, but I've seen it mentioned several times by people that have built dams.

Have you contacted Set(h?) from LandToHouse yet?
Rampumps are kind of his thing. He makes weekly videos about things you can change on the rampump-design he sells in his webshop or the way it's installed, most of time resulting in a less effective rampump.
So, to me, he's my expert on what to do and don't when building and installing a rampump.
I'm pretty sure he'd like to cooperate with you, if the travelling-distance is not a problem. (My geographic knowledge of the usa sucks, so I haven't got a clue how far apart you are.)
      Btw:
      Any plans for a micro-hydro?
      He does those too.

Tip when you’re pumping water like that. The pump head that’s in the water and creates a swirl put a pop bottle or something in the water that floats and it will stay on top of the swirl keeping it from sucking air.

In my research you want to use Damit when the pond is full, and the flow of water will draw it into the cracks.
Repeat treatment is common in low ponds for this reason, but you don't have to cast to the center when retreating.

I think using time-lapse type segments is a genuinely compelling editing device, because it implies a lot of work, on multiple levels. Which makes it interesting, narratively, raising questions like how "deep" is the time-lapse footage?, etc. It's cool. Wild to see those pond episodes (the dam building and whatnot) cut together like that. 👍

Frankly I'm impressed that 5hp pump was capable of enough head to get water up to the pond, but I think you're on the right track waiting for rain and having a self-sufficient maintenance pump. Would be interesting to see the difference between a solar pump (higher power daytime only) and ram pump (lower flow 24hr /day). Either way it would seem like keeping the prime is probably the biggest headache.

We used a dye trace method to find out where the water was going. The farm pond was created during the Depression. The owner hired a digger to de-slim the bottom and remove all the weeds. The pond started leaking, and he hired us to find the missing water. Our results found that a brook about half a mile away was turning red. He then drained the pond and allowed it to dry for several weeks, after which he bought 100 tons of gray clay and relined it himself. The pond stayed viable through the 1980s and up until the farm was sold. There is a plat on the site today.

Congratulations on the new calves, and particularly well done to No. 50.
I'm sure there are even more by now 🙂
I'm sure Jon is well aware, being a well-experienced livestock farmer, but just for information for the less experienced:
Freshly-calved cattle are probably the most dangerous domestic livestock most people are ever likely to encounter.
At least here in Ireland, cattle account for 15-20% of farm-related deaths each year, with well over half of that being at or around calving time. The other deaths are mostly 'non-aggressive' incidents (people getting suffocated or trampled among closely penned cattle, etc), with bull attacks coming in third place with a few percent each year too.
Everyone, livestock farmer or otherwise, knows to treat a bull with utmost caution.
A freshly calved cow, and especially a freshly calved heifer however, can turn from a placid and calm animal into a frenzied and wildly dangerous beast when her protective-mothering instincts kick in.
A half-ton+ of angry beef will gore, stomp, and grind into the dirt anyone and anything she perceives to be a threat to her calf. Dogs in particular create a particular hazard as they'll try to hide behind their human if they can't run away, often leading to dire consequences for both human and dog.
Baby calves are super cute, and their mothers are 'mostly' pretty chill, but there's always a significant potential of death or disfigurement. Admiring from afar is probably the best policy.

To raise the water level one foot on a 1/2-acre pond requires roughly 163,000 gallons of water. If your pump is pumping 25 gpm, it will take a little more than 4 days to raise the level a foot. Saw the rest of the vieeo, and you figured out how much time it is going to take. A hydraulic ram pump is a good choice for a keep-fill pump. You'll have to tune the timing of the ram to get it to pump well.

Ponds are so simple… yet so difficult that it’s insane. So many variables that can make it not have any water. No intake is 1 big one.

Like I always say in software, it's that simple and also that complicated. It's easy to conceptualize but difficult to materialize.

I used about 200" of 6" preforated pip, slightly curved to catch the download flow through the horizontal section of the pipes.. 6" on overflow and 2" on down to the house. Never without water!!!!

Soil is so important. Where we live if you dig a hole, it fills with water and doesnt leak. We take that for granted.

I have moved back to Virginia. I am at my forever home! Yay!
Since I've been here, the news says that we're having a flash drought. Very high temps and hardly any rain. Hopefully, it'll be over soon.

HomeTown Acres did this a year or so ago - almost got it right! Could have used more horizontal pipe soaking up more underground flow - but it DID contribute to pond anyway!!1

Landtohouse is the master of the RAM pump...definitely check him out!
Constant trickle of water going into the pond will definitely offset the evaporation and the damit stuff seems to work well!
    Keep em coming!!!!

just a thought the next time that you build a pond check with your local concrete company and see if you can get wash out from them. they will usually give it to you. once you line it with about 6 to 12 inches and compact it the pond will seal and the lime will balance the ph level.
