Black people love Nollywood because we can relate to it. It’s about story telling which is a traditional form of entertainment across the black world. White people may find it strange, slow moving but trust me it is through those lenses that we see life and Nollywood does that very well. Nigerians are blessed with great talent, kudos to you and keep up the good work. It’s only a matter of time before we take back the world that was given to our custody

A very distorted version of how Nollywood started. Yes, Nigeria made films way back, but what we know today as "Nollywood" started in 1992 after 'Living in Bondage' movie was shot and released. I don't know what this historical distortion is supposed to achieve. They even mentioned Ken Nnebue's 'Living in Bondage' as a footnote. Total crap. Don't get it twisted. Nollywood did not start in 1921 or 1951. It did after Living in Bondage shot on DHS. Made in cassette and eventually to CD's exported outside Nigeria and the diaspora.

    • @sammygoodman6699

Thanks. I observed immediately from the beginning. Living In Bondage was actually shot in Igbo language. I do not understand what this historical distortion is meant to accomplish and before you know it, the world will come to accept that distortion as the truth.

No lies there, living in bandage was in 1990's, they said how it started, Yoruba's like Ogunde have been acting and doing films since the 70's and 80's

@@Samuelkings No one is disputing the fact that Yoruba's were making movies way back. But pls follow the argument. The question is how and when did the phenomenon called 'Nollywood' start?
To the best of my knowledge it started in 1992 after Ken Nnebue shot his Igbo drama called 'Living in Bondage' on DHS. Followed by so many others, bringing with it the business aspect of movie making to the fore by Alaba trader's, including marketing these low budget movies to the worldwide audience. This made the New York Times journalist Onishi, after observing the phenomenon that was coming out Nigeria to dub it "Nollywood", liking it to great Hollywood of US. It is very disingenuous to suggest that Nollywood was started by Yoruba's. It is not true, can never be true no matter how it is diced and sliced.

Nollywood didn’t start with the Yoruba. That is an unfortunate distortion of History.
Nollywood began in the 1990’s by the film ‘ Living in Bondage’ which was produced in the Igbo language , produced by Igbo producers, actors, distributors, marketers , financiers and business men.
This ushered in the Era of what is now Nigeria cinematic entertainment Industry. It is very false not to give credit to the ones who risked and shouldered the burden of the initial emergence and all the challenges it faced then.

Only correction: "Nollywood" is an entirely NIGERIAN phenomenon, reflective of Yoruba drama tradition (along with others) but with origin in the commercial enterprise of the Igbo community. The modern filmmaking industry in Nigeria dubbed Nollywood is widely credited to the Igbo community and was engineered when Living in Bondage was produced. But, yes, Nollywood reflects us all as Nigerians from North to South, East to West and we're proud of where it is going.

''Nollywood'' did NOT originate in Yoruba states. It started in South East in the 1990s. Yes, in the South Eastern states, especially Enugu, in1990s.
Before ''Nollywood'', there had been cinema and also, all manner of television programs across every section of Nigeria (not just in Yoruba areas) long before the Nollywood of today.
In the early 1990s, a new trend emerged in the East. This new trend of Igbo movies would soon replace foreign movies, (Hollywood and Bollywood movies) that were also popular then in the East and gradually grew from the Igbo language movies for the local Igbo audience to English language movies for a wider audience.
For the reason of wider audience, the group then moved to Lagos and increasingly getting more non-Igbo speakers involved. This new movie trend would soon be tagged Nollywood and soon every other movie coming out of Nigeria came under the banner of Nollywood because it has now gained an international standing and that is how the name Nollywood soon incorporated every movie made in Nigeria, including even those made long before Nollywood was non-existent.
Without the 1990s' trend, there would be no Nollywood and none of these so-called old cinemas and soap operas would be known beyond their cultural zones as the Nollywood has made possible.
So, your history is wrong but I can guess your sources. They are many on the internet, from Yoruba bloggers and media. If they had said movie making didn't start with Nollywood, they would have been right. If they had also said Yoruba states were among the cinema pioneers in Nigeria, it won't be totally wrong. However, to claim that Nollywood originated in Yoruba states is a deliberate distortion of history which they have vested so much effort and resources in perpetuating for some time now.

Stop displaying your stupidity online. Yorubas started Nollywood in Nigeria. Where were the Igbos or South East when Hubert Ogunde, Papa Ajasco, Wale Olaiya etc were doing movies? Where were you when the first TV station in Nigeria (WNBC in Ibadan which was later changed to NTA - Nigeria Television Authority) was showing movies produced by the Yorubas when the East never knew what Television was? Where were the Igbos when the first Cinema house in Nigeria which was established in Lagos was showing movies made by Adelove, Hubert Ogunde etc?
You claimed Igbos started Nollywood in 1990 when the National theater in Lagos showing Yoruba movies had been there and working around 1970 or so, likewise the first TV station in Africa which was situated in Ibadan, another Yoruba state. So, please tell me, does this add up and make sense to you that Igbos started Nollywood in Nigeria in 1990? Stop this shenanigans and read up from Google about Nollywood. Check the highest grossing movies in Nigeria they are Yoruba made movies. Oh ! You think the whole world is as daft as you, right? Tribalism has eaten deep into your brain so much that it has made you delusional.🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

@@jossyt7001 Wonderful! Fantastic presentation by an erudite Yoruba ''historian''! Your Yoruba kind of narrative reigned supreme over the Nigerian population when the Nigerian media being controlled by Yoruba people was the only news outlet before the internet era. Then it was used to shape every history in Nigeria to their favour. Therefore it will take sometime to get things back to normal.
By the way, I hope it's still true that Yorubas are one of the most educated people in the world while Igbo's on the contrary are the most illiterate people in Nigeria who know only buying and selling, according to Yoruba-controlled Nigerian media? What about the ''fact'' that Igboland is just a large bush with no good houses or any development while Yoruba land is so advanced to global standard that Igbos are so envious of it?
I get it now. Yes I do. All those television programs happened only in Yoruba states and nowhere else. Even during the regional autonomy of the Nigeria's first republic, other people folded their hands in their regions waiting for Yoruba people as they couldn't do anything on their own. Yes even broadcasting and theatre arts itself were all invented and sustained by Yoruba people till tomorrow. Great!

@@davies93313 Sincerely, I wish I could know your age. You talk like a juvenile with little or no evidence to back up your argument. I've talked about WNBC (now NTA), I've talked about the national theater in Lagos and other points. Go to Google yourself and check (it's not a rocket science for crying out loud !) Why don't you state your facts as I've stated mine with evidence for the world to know who amongst us is embarking on an escapade of irredeemable stupidity?
Talking about education, everybody is aware that during the regional system of government in the 1960s, each region had their own areas of specialization. The Yorubas are known for education. Many Igbo elites such as Chinua Achebe etc came to the South West for their education. Infact the first free education in Nigeria started from the Yorubas. The first top 4 universities in Nigeria are in the South West. Igbos are known for Business while the North is known for Agriculture. I'm sure you understand the concept "comparative advantage".
Nobody can take anything away from the Igbos as they are equally a force to reckon with and are equally doing great in all human endeavour - most especially in business and lately education. Both Yorubas and Igbos are all over the world doing well academically and in other areas. Education or business is not an exclusive right of any tribe or ethnicity. However, because of the situation here and the narrative you are trying to throw around, it's very obvious you are trying to distort history.
I still don't understand why you guys are always fixated on the narrative that Yorubas own the media in Nigeria and are trying to skew things in their favour.. There are several media outlets owned by different people from different ethnic groups in Nigeria. I'm sure there are those owned by Igbos. Why must you guys blame Yorubas for every misfortune that befalls you? Yorubas are not the owners of Google or other international media outlets. Yorubas are not the ones who wrote those journals. Thanks for watching and please no need to use strong words, since we're all learning and our intention is to publish verified information to our audience. For this reason, we take the time to research our topics very well, to avoid miseducating. A simple google search will give you so much insight about the average Hollywood budget. We will help you out here with a short resource to start with:
"The average cost to produce a major studio movie has been around $65 million. But the production costs don't cover distribution and marketing, which adds another $35 million or so, on average, bringing the total cost to produce and market a major movie to right about $100 million. "

So you think Nollywood became the 2nd largest film industry in the world by being filthy and disorganized? You are either stupid or just jealous. There’s a reason why people don’t invest in South African movie industry maybe you should find out why rather than saying rubbish about a success of another African Country.
