No child left behind started when I was in 7th grade thanks to Bush jr. As a kid i was like "wtf you mean no child left behind?!". It was unheard of until then. It was honestly scary. Smh. Thank goodness i grew up an early 90s kid.
If you’ve completed 2 years or more of college (60 credits or more), we're going to assume that you can do basic math, reading and writing. That particular test isn’t what's important. It's needing and having the ability/skills to pas the specific test (praxis test) in the subject area of your degree and the subject that you plan to teach. I'm a 44 year old health & phys. ed teacher in Plfd., NJ. Twenty-one years in the field. Rather than being upset about a test, parents need to hold themselves ane their child/children accountable for their actions (lack there of). That's the biggest problem involving the schools. Salute.
The problem is we as FBA are taught to go to school and work for people for our whole life! We should be teaching our kids trades, entrepreneurship, and too open businesses with people like minded! I got a degree and I feel like I wasted that money on stuff that I can learn on the internet!
Public schools in New York do offer various trades training while students are in 11th and 12th grades . There are also Charter school educations offered that are paid for in part by the public school systems.
Bad enough that the kids now a days don't even care about writing anything down correctly with all of the acronym, and ebonics. Parents have failed their kids and expect the school systems and even rap music to teach the children and it has been a failure.
Just means take extra time to teach your kids at home. Teach them real life skills that you as an adult have to do. Use public school as free babysitting and then get home from work and sit with them. Read with them. Teach them
The public school system is a joke, and any parent who solely relies on the school system to educate their child is insane. It's important to stay on top of these teachers, check your kids work and expose them to a vast variety of literature, and give them experiences outside of the purview of the free education system.
The public school system is not a joke , good neighborhoods have excellent public schools, The question is why are all failing schools in low come neighborhoods there in lies the answer…there’s an elephant in the room HELLO!
Agreed. It’s a WE issue. Strong schools, or in my area, Blue Ribbon, whether public or private rely on strong parents who take an interest in their children’s lives beyond the classroom. While socioeconomic factors can influence the child’s perspective, something magical happens in a classroom with great teachers.
I pay homage to the OG star .I mean, you’re acting surprised. This is the world we live in now the librarian is probably someone that identifies as a seahorse or something.
The way things going with the cost of everything going up, and the education system becoming more trash, it reassures me that I don’t want children. Just a few weeks ago I was finishing up my Christmas shopping for my little nephews and I saw a stroller for $950 😮, obviously I know there’s much cheaper ones out there, but I never knew a stroller could cost that much lol
I think it's admirable that you are honest about not wanting children. It's a huge commitment, especially for parents who want to raise solid, well-mannered thinkers who are educated and prepared for the world. Society is advocating for raising children through a device and doing the least amount of parenting possible. Being the child of competent parents is an anomaly these days.

So, you want no one to continue your lineage? No image of yourself that you can raise into a warrior? And, no one capable of taking care of you in your old age? Because, unless your life ends early, you will get old and will need someone to care for you or just check in on you.
The discussion regarding the topic is timely, thoughtful, and informative. I agree that exempting NJ teachers from taking the test will adversely impact the education. I disagree with Dana that the parents are to blame. This shouldn't be about pointing fingers rather, as Star said it's a new era. This lowering of standards for teachers will likely continue to address diversity, shortages, and as the male caller said to make way for A.I. based education.
What does it matter if a teacher has to pass literacy test when they have to have a degree to be a teacher? Make it make sense. If anything, it’s less red tape for the school
If a person is required to have a minimum of a Bachelor’s Degree and successful past the student teaching qualifications to become a Certified Teacher an additional test should not be required. True you can substitute without a Teacher’s Certification.
I’m an educator & this is absolutely ridiculous. they are classifying that reading and writing is a luxury and not an necessity. It’s the main reason why reading rainbow was pulled off the air on PBS during the no child left behind. Utterly shameful.
Why is it dumb? A lot of parents are trash, have never looked at an assignment or test, and are shocked their child can barely read or write when they graduate. Parents need to be active in their children's education. Period.
Private schools are not bond by the requirements for teaching like Public Schools. They could hire a teacher with less qualifications. Also, Dana said Newark has a bigger budget than the surrounding suburbs. My questions is, how many students are in that system? What is the dollar amount allocated per student? How many of those kids are special needs? It makes a difference when it comes to funding.
Looks like I’m going to have to pick up a few more shifts at work and find a way to send my kids to Catholic school. I’d prefer an environment more similar to their home life than government indoctrination. My little Antonio JR, will come home as Tonya.

How will these home schooled kids get into college? In high school they are offered AP classes which colleges look at re: merit scholarships and acceptances. How are these home schooled kids gonna get a leg up w/ AP classes for college?
Home schooled students can take AP classes. A student who hasn't been enrolled in an AP course can still take the exam. A lot of home schooled students do better on standardized exams and are further along in their education than students who learn in a more traditional setting. Home schooling isn't good for students socially, but academically, it can be a boon to their education.
