  • The oncoming Sentinel needs 2 quick adjustments (one at 4:06 the other at 4:37) by the inspecting NCO before being posted. Also, there were 2 Honor Flights present. Honor Flight Maine and Honor Flight Southern Nevada. What an honor to be in the presence of these World War II, Korea, and Vietnam War Heroes.

My Dad pointed out to me that every action taken by The Sentinel on Post is an action in salute to the Unknown. The highest Salute our nation can give is a 21 gun salute. The Sentinel on Post walks 21 steps from one end of the mat to the other. He stands at each end for 21 seconds and then walks another 21 steps to the other end. It is a tremendous Honor to be a member of The Old Guard. Their entire routine and way of life is meant to honor those who gave up their very identity so we could be free. While in the Tomb of the Unknown, the Unknown's family has no peace. It is believed in some cultures and religions that until the dead is buried and given a full burial service, the soul has no peace. To give up who you are, and potential for your peace in Death... It is a gift we don't deserve. Its something to learn from.

What's the meaning of the number 21?

    • @pwh2998
      @pwh2998 4 ปีที่แล้ว +27

John Lee it’s a long history. It began with ships coming to port would fire their cannons to show that they were now empty and they had peaceful intentions. If you know where salutes, handshakes, and touching glasses after a toast came from this is a fairly similar thing. For whatever reason Britain started firing 7 shots when they’d come to port (some say it’s because in the Bible, God rested on the 7th day). This show of peaceful intentions started to become a way of displaying honor as well slowly throughout history. Along with 7, 3 was also seen as a very holy number, so they would fire a ratio 1:3 of the typical 7 shots-21 in total-to display the highest honor. They’d fire 21 shots to honor the British Royal family and for anniversaries as well. So by walking 21 steps and waiting 21 seconds, it’s a symbolic way of showing those who haven’t been found the highest of respect and honor. You’ll find the military is full of symbolism the more you dive into it.

I do Mr Martin. I appreciate it just as much as you do, if for different reasons. I suspect that you, if you're anything like my dad (two tours Korean War), appreciate it it as an example of your own dedication to excellence and duty. I am not a veteran, nor have I ever served in the military. I can't see it from your perspective, but I can see the amount of work that goes into this level of perfection... CONSISTENT perfection... and appreciate it from there.
I stand and salute when I listen to the national anthem. I fly an illuminated flag pole, and when our motorhome moves that flag pole is the last thing down, with respect, and the first thing up. My daughter knows what it means when taps are playing at a funeral... She watched Grandpa Mel buried at Bakersfield National Cemetery. She LOVES shaking the hand of a person in uniform, and never fails to say thank you.
It's little enough... too little... to do in gratitude to those that earn our freedoms for us, but it's all I can do. So... Thank you sir for your service. I hope I and my family are the sort of Americans you were willing to fight for... rather than ones you were willing to fight.

I found a copy of "Sacred Duty," a recent book (2019) by Tom Cotton, who served a tour at Arlington National Cemetery, and he details not only the Tomb Sentinel's duty, but all the other funerals that take place at Arlington.

Fyi, the 3rd Regiment of The United States Army, aka "The Old Guard" dates back to 1784. Being a Sentinel for the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier is one of the most, if not THE most, highly coveted posts in the US military. You MUST have a completely spotless service record, and pass a huge number of tests before you are even considered. You must also be of a certain height. And while on duty, you will not be wearing your rank insignia, so as not to outrank the soldier within the tomb you are guarding. So much tradition and precision goes into doing this duty. And yes, even a speck of dust on your rifle WILL be cleaned off if there is one during the ceremony. My Dad was one and has had, on more than one occasion (several actually), had to reprimand the crowd for talking/laughing during the ceremony. Dad would never tell me if they carried a loaded weapon or not. My guess is no, as you never hand over a loaded weapon for inspection.

The beauty of the Guard ceremony is without parallel. Having sat in silence for hours just watching these men and women walking the line is truly a sight to behold. The willingness of a service member to apply for acceptance into this most prestigious of assignments humbles me, and reminds me that despite the sloth I see in our society, there are people like this. Quietly standing guard, with a level of precision born of personal discipline. Dedicated solely to the task of watching over our cherished dead. God bless them all.

A little clarification for everybody. The on coming guard is not in any kind of trouble. Several hours before he came on duty he inspected his uniform him self. Right before he left the barracks to go on duty 3 or more NCO's inspected his uniform. The tomb guard as a tradition of always striving for perfection so you will never complete any uniform inspection without a few (2 to be exact) minor corrections. More than likely his ribbons or badges came slightly out of alignment during his walk over and his belt may have slipped when walking up stairs. The NCO fixed those small issue just before he came on guard so he would be as close to perfect as possible.

What amazes me about this is that the timing has to be exactly perfect at all times. If one second too much is taken during the walk to where the relief sentinel is standing, then, if one second is taken for the inspection too long, that would throw the entire thing off. The soldier who is walking the mat has his timing, 21 seconds, turn, 21 seconds, march 21 steps, etc. If you notice, when the relief sentinel is marching with the SS, they are both in sync with the other sentinel as they come together. It is truly remarkable and takes many hours of practice for this to be that precise.

@@Sprixyy It is all biblical. 21 is the number of sinful disobedience against God and subsequent Judgement.
21 is a multiple of three 7's and there are 21 divine plagues unleashed during the Apocalypse in the Apostle John's Book of Revelation.
(777 - seven Seals, seven Trumpets, and seven Bowls.)
Twenty-one symbolizes the great wickedness of rebellion and sin. After the children of Israel left Egyptian bondage they had 21 major rebellious events as their traveled and wandered the wilderness.
The number 13, which symbolizes depravity and sinfulness, and 21 are closely related. The meaning of twenty-one in the Bible is an outgrowth of thirteen. Adding thirteen (sinfulness) and eight (symbolizing a new beginning) gives us twenty-one or a number that represents beginning a new level or effort that is sinful and disobedient against God.
On the last day of God's seven-day Spring festival, the 21st of the month of Nisan, the Eternal carried out his last judgment against the Egyptians. He drowned Pharaoh and his entire army in the Red Sea as they were pursuing the Israelites in order to make them slaves again.
      On the 21 gun salute,
The tradition of rendering a salute by cannon originated in the 14th century as firearms and cannons came into use. Since these early devices contained only one projectile, discharging them once rendered them ineffective. Originally warships fired seven-gun salutes--the number seven probably selected because of its astrological and Biblical significance. Seven planets had been identified and the phases of the moon changed every seven days. The Bible states that God rested on the seventh day after Creation, that every seventh year was sabbatical and that the seven times seventh year ushered in the Jubilee year.
Land batteries, having a greater supply of gunpowder, were able to fire three guns for every shot fired afloat, hence the salute by shore batteries was 21 guns. The multiple of three probably was chosen because of the mystical significance of the number three in many ancient civilizations. Early gunpowder, composed mainly of sodium nitrate, spoiled easily at sea, but could be kept cooler and drier in land magazines. When potassium nitrate improved the quality of gunpowder, ships at sea adopted the salute of 21 guns.

I served in the UNC Honor Guard, Yongsan Garrison, South Korea, and the standards are based upon the "Old Guards" standards.
