For years, I hated the fact that we lost that final to Brasil. Mostly because people were hating on Kahn, saying shit like "he cost us the finals". We never deserved to make it out of the group stage, that is how bad we were back then... Kahn was the ONLY reason why we made it to the finals in the first place. He didn't deserve to take any negative comments after he messed up in them. Anyway, ever since the last World Cup and that semi final against Brasil, I don't feel as bad about this World Cup anymore... ^^
I dont think Kahn messed up in those finals. Even in that final he made some great saves other goalkeepers wouldnt have made, and the first goal was caused by a very tricky shot many goalkeepers would have struggled with. Germany's defense didnt cover ronaldo, otherwise the 2nd attempt would not have been possible. and the 2nd goal was impossible for kahn to prevent. Overall if anyone is to take blame its germany's defense, kahn had to overperform in so many games, finals included, because the german defense was so bad and uncoordinated.
Also, Michael Ballack missed the final due to suspension. He was playing very well throughout the tournament. The final might have been a closer match (even though Brazil at that time would have had a slight edge) if Ballack was playing.
Kahn was THE reason for getting so far in this tournament. I remember that he made so many damn awesome safes that you got the feeling of „nothing can happen to us because Kahn is there“... I never had that feeling again. I was so glad that they gave him the player of the tournament trophy. And what a heartbreaking Moment as he made that huge mistake against brasil at the 1:0 .... that was so brutal after all these out of this world safes

Ashish Singh i been a fan of germany since 1994 that was my first world cup i watched when i was 7 i been rooting for them ever since, this past decade they been in 2nd and 3rd, for the past world cups, but everything seems right in the cards for Germany to win this year, Klose is close to setting new record and make history, Germany due to win after a long drought, what better way to win then in brazil!

At this world cup I fell in love with this sport and the position as a goalkeeper.. Kahn was the best, and 10 years later my style as a goalkeeper has a big influence of his style :)
World Cup 2002 was my first Cup I have ever seen as child, and Oliver Kahn soon became my favorite player in this event, then from this point I was watching all future World and Euro Cups, and cheering for the National Elf. For me he is the all time best goalkeeper so far. This guy was more than a regular great goalkeeper, he had all the skills, not only reflex, physical strenght and leadership, but he perfectly recognized ths situations in front of the goal, it is why he succeeded so many times running out far from the goal line. He took the risk, but he knew what he is doing, he knew his own capabilities as well. I always felt like he is a mad tiger who would even grab the ball with his fangs, if he could.

Man kann es auch so interpretieren, dass bei dieser WM die Außenseiter stark aufgespielt haben. Der Umstand, dass Südkorea zwei glückliche und überraschende Siege gegen Italien und Spanien verbuchen konnte, muss allerdings auch berücksichtigt werden. Im nachhinein hatte Korea schon großes Glück. Nichts desto trotz sind die meisten Favoriten an ihren schwachen Leistungen gescheitert. Italien war alles andere als Souverän in der Gruppenphase und auch Spanien hatte im Achtelfinale große Schwierigkeiten mit Irland und Südkorea. Beide Spiele gingen ins Elfmeterschießen. Aber dennoch war es gerade deswegen eine schöne Weltmeisterschaft und die deutsche Mannschaft stand am Ende auch nicht unverdient im Finale. Die Mannschaft hat im gesamten Turnier nur 3 Gegentore kassiert und insgesamt 5 mal zu Null gespielt, das ist schon eine beeindruckende Leistung. Vor allem im Finale waren die deutschen besonders stark. Hier drehte sich der Spieß um, und Brasilien hatte das (verdiente) Glück (des Tüchtigen). Das im ganzen Turnier auch Glück dabei war, dass bestreite ich nicht. Das brauchst du immer, sonst kommst du erst gar nicht soweit :)
Best Goalkeeper performance in a tournament I ever seen. I was 9 when this World Cup was on but I remember it perfectly. I played as a striker but Oliver Kahn made me want to be a goalkeeper and made me a Bayern fan ( as well as the signing of Claudio Pizarro since I’m from Peru ) never seen a goalkeeper like Kahn to this day not even close. Not just in terms of goalkeeping but he used to intimidate the hell out of attackers. They don’t make goalkeepers like Kahn anymore
It's embarrasing how poor the german defense performed back then. They would have barely made it out of the goup stage if they had had an average goalkeeper. Also they only barely defeated all of their opponents (except Saudi Arabia) and only managed to do so because Kahn saved their asses in every match.

People have zero nuance, that team had a lot of good players, it was a good squad, it simply was weaker than Brazi, Argentina (who underperformed) and maybe three or four European squads.
How Olembe of Cameroon shit his pants in the 1v1 is a prime example of what separates Kahn from other great goalkeepers. He struck fear into the hearts and minds of opponents. Odd comparison maybe, but he was like Michael Jordan in that even teammates were afraid of him. He was a very loud and demanding leader who could certainly wear you down. But he just oozed confidence and made everyone raise their level of play. As a Dortmund fan I've seen this first-hand a good number of times. When Kahn played the other team often went into games already defeated. Nobody wanted to meet him in his territory, he was such a beast. One of a kind, have massive respect for him.

Around 2015 I voluntered myself to be the goalkepper from our team (it was an inside tournament with the other students) i remember i knee nothing about defending and then i searched for good saves,then i found this video and i was just mesmerized by oliver khan,i kept replying this video again and again,thank God ronaldo scored those 2 goals hahahaha

Oliver Kahns weakness has always been grabbing the ball. In a lot of situations you saw him simply push away a grabbable ball. But his shot stopping ability was unmatched.

Der Umstand, dass Südkorea zwei glückliche und überraschende Siege gegen Italien und Spanien verbuchen konnte, muss allerdings auch berücksichtigt werden. Im nachhinein hatte Korea schon großes Glück. Nichts desto trotz sind die meisten Favoriten an ihren schwachen Leistungen gescheitert. Italien war alles andere als Souverän in der Gruppenphase und auch Spanien hatte im Achtelfinale große Schwierigkeiten mit Irland und Südkorea. Beide Spiele gingen ins Elfmeterschießen. Aber dennoch war es gerade deswegen eine schöne Weltmeisterschaft und die deutsche Mannschaft stand am Ende auch nicht unverdient im Finale. Die Mannschaft hat im gesamten Turnier nur 3 Gegentore kassiert und insgesamt 5 mal zu Null gespielt, das ist schon eine beeindruckende Leistung. Vor allem im Finale waren die deutschen besonders stark. Hier drehte sich der Spieß um, und Brasilien hatte das (verdiente) Glück (des Tüchtigen). Das im ganzen Turnier auch Glück dabei war, dass bestreite ich nicht. Das brauchst du immer, sonst kommst du erst gar nicht soweit :)

Best Goalkeeper performance in a tournament I ever seen. I was 9 when this World Cup was on but I remember it perfectly. I played as a striker but Oliver Kahn made me want to be a goalkeeper and made me a Bayern fan ( as well as the signing of Claudio Pizarro since I’m from Peru ) never seen a goalkeeper like Kahn to this day not even close. Not just in terms of goalkeeping but he used to intimidate the hell out of attackers. They don’t make goalkeepers like Kahn anymore
It's embarrasing how poor the german defense performed back then. They would have barely made it out of the goup stage if they had had an average goalkeeper. Also they only barely defeated all of their opponents (except Saudi Arabia) and only managed to do so because Kahn saved their asses in every match.

Here in Germany, we consider the national team a _"tournament team"._ It doesn't matter how bad we did in friendlies or the qualifications, if it's WC or EURO time, the results must fit!

@Erasmo Stride Yes but compared to the next generation of players such as Schweinsteiger, Lahm, Ozil, Muller and Hummels that won the 2014 WC as well as previous squads, this team was very subpar on paper. Kahn, Ballack and Klose really took them singlehandedly to the final.
People have zero nuance, that team had a lot of good players, it was a good squad, it simply was weaker than Brazi, Argentina (who underperformed) and maybe three or four European squads.

How Olembe of Cameroon shit his pants in the 1v1 is a prime example of what separates Kahn from other great goalkeepers. He struck fear into the hearts and minds of opponents. Odd comparison maybe, but he was like Michael Jordan in that even teammates were afraid of him. He was a very loud and demanding leader who could certainly wear you down. But he just oozed confidence and made everyone raise their level of play. As a Dortmund fan I've seen this first-hand a good number of times. When Kahn played the other team often went into games already defeated. Nobody wanted to meet him in his territory, he was such a beast. One of a kind, have massive respect for him.

First goal should not be counted because Rivaldo fouled Hamann ( if i'm not wrong ) and it should be a foul for Germany, but he shoot the ball, Kahn missed it and then Ronaldo scored. if Germany would have scored that goal in second half when Neuville hit the post. The result would be different.
