Your site is amazing. Without the knowledge, experience and insights that I’ve acquired, I doubt that I would have gotten it. But wow! With the eyes to see, the ears to hear, and the intelligence to comprehend, wholly mackerel, what a treasure!!!! I’ve considered and reviewed other great drummers’ lesson sites, but this is the ticket. So glad to be a lifetime member ;~)
Your lesson on instant gratification and perseverance is a great life lesson that happens to be perfectly applicable to the art of drumming.

Thanks for mentioning the right hand-bass drum singles. That's like polishing the hose nozzle when what I need to do is wash the car.

Great stuff again Phil. The phrase that I use to describe that burning inward frustration that we feel when we are trying to get something difficult is "the cutting edge of learning". Learning to accept and embrace that feeling is what changed everything for me in drumming and as you say, the discipline that I have learned has changed the rest of my life too. I'm always looking to refine that specific skill and your recent videos are helping me greatly with that, so again, thank you.

Mistakes are but stepping stones to success, if you embrace them and don't judge yourself for making them!

I agree with the concept of delayed gratification and the discipline that goes along with it. One thing I would add, is to celebrate your small victories, as this will help to keep you from getting frustrated by slow paced progress. Also, the study method you shared in your recent videos as well as your lessons site is the key to making any real progress. I love the idea of having a different mindset for performance versus a practice/study mindset. Embrace the suck is also good because it shows you exactly what you need to work on, so you can add that knowledge to your practice plan. Better to have the courage to try new things, than to only play and practice what you already know quite well. Thanks, Phil, these concept videos are golden!

Very well said bratha John! Its important to talk about because it can creep into the mind in negative ways if one is not aware :-(

Phil, some of the content you offer is what drummers pay tens of thousands for at MI, Drummer's Collective, or Berklee. Really too bad that every drummer on Earth isn't watching your channel at least periodically.

Last night's gig was bad , it was loud so I was gripping too hard and it wasn't helping at all. Mind wasn't in music mode it was just a commentary on how hopless I was, mind just felt like it was watching me playing and detached. Playing like some delayed puppet on strings . My head was saying how can this all be so hard when I'm practicing 3 hours a day and there is progress there but my head was just saying wow you are still struggling and it's not like I'm not trying. I'll have to put this down being burnt out ,I'm soooo inconsistent in quality of ability.
Attention span = that is a thing i lock on to as if trying to learn something and you are not actually paying attention to what you are learning it's like looking out of the window during class.
Devaluation of music is a thing I see at gigs, the only plus of it is I can be terrible and nobody even notices. But last night was one if those nights that make me think why the hell am I still practicing as its brutal

    • @philmaturanodrums
      @philmaturanodrums  19 วันที่ผ่านมา

Just let it go. If you can't let it go and look at this night from afar just give it a few days. As in leaving bad relationships...Time heals all. Give yourself a few days off. Then in a calm state of mind approach your practice sessions again. No need to panic. Happens to everyone. The next gig will be better. Don't worry. Many meetings from Bali!

@@philmaturanodrums these gigs come along and give a kicking. Can never tell if it's going to be easy or a battle. At home the environment is in control and if something isn't working out I can run it again and slow it way down. Trying to get my head into what feels like direct brain to limb mode is the biggest blocker to free playing. Feeling like I'm a 3rd party to what is happening is a disaster. Disassociation is a freaky state to be in .
Today I went through the full batch of things I'm working on long term and I can tell small walls are being overcome.
I've played so many permutations and switching leading limbs that I'm caring less and less about what limb is falling onto or starting on what part of the grid .
That's been the long term goal . Some of the exercises have had a few 32nd doubles added into the mix and also working in mixtures of triplets joining into the 16th phrases. One step at a time.
I've been working on the sticking exercise of singles into doubles into paradiddles and back.
That has had the problem of the paradiddles and doubles using a clear rebound technique and singles being a more forced direct wrist approach for the increased speed , it's been a jarring transition.
So I've started playing the singles as rebound staggered doubles
      L R l r
and that plays with the same overall feel when going between the doubles and paradiddles.
It feels more like one technique and not swapping over from one way of playing to another.
