Just saw it - should be called Kinds of Hedonism
Dunno. Sometimes watching a movie is about having an interesting experience in the moment and there is some value to that. But sometimes the director's head just disappears up his own backend and it's a waste of time to sit through that sort of self-indulgent tripe. I have never watched a Lanthimos film and felt my time was well spent afterwards.
El director no se va a adaptar a lo que tú quieres ver.
@@MExagono66-wl8gp This is not even remotely related to what I said. I said it's a waste of MY time to watch what this director does. The beautiful thing about art and the free market is that there is something for everyone and it can find it's audience. Clearly there are people who feel different than me. If you like his stuff: good for you. You are attacking a position I did not express with my statement.
This movie perfectly exemplefies the notion from hollywood, that the more depraved somethinhg the funnier it should be
I think I will pass on this one. It sounds a little too bizarre for my taste. Thank you for your honest review.
It sounds like shock for the sake of shock value. I want to be entertained, not disturbed. And sitting through 3 hours of this… in an overpriced theater, nope lol.
I'm right there with you. The movie system and the movie chains are too vulnerable right now for this type of stuff. They need hits to bring people back, not this. What were they thinking.
@@lawrencetalbot8346movies isn’t all just about entertainment. There is different art form. U want entertaining then go watch marvel
Same , I have tickets for it tomorrow but damn I have AmC a list so might as well but damn if it’s gonna be another one of with Emma getting fucked all over the place then I hope the director and Emma just fuck in private .
I only saw Killing of a Sacred Deer, which annoyed me enough that I did not care to see any of Lanthimos' other films. Was skipping out on Poor Things a good call? (let alone this.) His stuff comes off as overly metaphorical, exhibitionist, non-sequitur, and non-human. Not for me.
I didn't even finish Poor Things, and Sacred Deer also sucked. No interest in this.
Oh man, I totally forgot about Killing of a Sacred Deer? That was another film that received great reviews, but wasn't very entertaining. OK, that's all I need to know about this film.
Think the word is pretentious
@@emiami458 I guess I was being pretentious on how overly descriptive I was being so perhaps I shouldn't be one to level that cricism haha. But yes I agree. Lanthimos, Wes Anderson and Von Trier are not my kinds of directors for how pretentious can be, but I won't take anything away those happen to enjoy them, either.
The Favourite was really good
Definitely weird for weird's sake.
That’s my problem with his films. He makes choices that just get old. Weird for weird sake isn’t unique or smart. But of course people praise it. Poor things was so dumb with its constant sex scenes
I greatly enjoy his stuff, and I totally agree that it's not for everyone 😊
Sounds like right up my alley. Sounds like a Beau Is Afraid type of movie which was great too. Poor Things was okay but Killing of A Sacred Deer was a masterpiece as was The Lobster.
I liked every film by Yorgos since Dogtooth. Looking forward to this. Gotta admit tho, his films are often times more of a vibe than a great story.
Then you’ll love it.
This one was very much made for hardcore fans and very much not for the casual viewer. I expect most people who have only seen/only enjoy The Favorite and Poor Things to hate this. It truly may be his all around weirdest.
Haaaaated this friggin movie soooo much
This would have just been a midnight movie in the 70s
Poor Things sounded perverted and gross so this is definitely a skip for me
I wasnt familiar with Yorgos but after seeing The Favorite and Poor Things I cant wait to see this.
Symbolism in this movie is probably meant for those who practice the dark arts. Sounds similar to that crazy Mother! film.
More isolationist cringe
I'm looking forward to this one. Really enjoy his films. Absurdist, surreal...
Chris says "I don't want to say what happens next" AFTER the thumb and liver thing. 🤢😱
The really sad thing is that this will probably win awards...
Lo realmente triste es que quieras descartar a una película como merecedora de premios, únicamente por tener contenido gráfico.
@@MExagono66-wl8gp
I've seen it. It's not worthy of awards, aside from some actor's work maybe.
@@grim_2000 Está bien no saber de arte, pero no te excedas.
It gets much worse.
I’m sold. 😂
The cast sounds hilarious for this.
Ppl seem to enjoy watching her dance. Apparently.
She enjoys making a fool of herself on camera for some reason...but I guess if I got paid to be an idiot, I'd do the same.
5/5 movies. Keep it coming Yorgos
i appreciate your opinion especially as a woman who felt very uncomfortable by many of the themes presented in this movie. do i regret watching ? no i don’t but i don’t really care for how things were presented either.
Just watched it. Feel like you watched a different movie. It was very purposeful and entertaining
Thanks for the honest review, Chris. It's a pass for me.
There are a lot of very graphic and bizarre films from Greek directors. Personally, my all-time favorite is Singapore Sling. It is a very uncomfortable watch, but entertaining regardless.
This is a weird sounding movie. Can’t wait to see people who like it tell me about all the imagery, deeper meanings, and coded language or whatever. Sometimes shit is just weird and whatever themes being told are just too weird.
It sounds like Movie 43
It'll be like the Three Colours films. When I came out of the screening, some guy was handing out brochures called "Your guide to deciphering this film"
I said to him, "Great! Where the hell were you when I was walking in?"
Best Yorgos Lanthimos film in my opinion. People should definitely watch it.
I’ll just say that one of my favourite aspects of Lanthimos’s storytelling and style is how he refuses to take himself too seriously. That’s what separates him for me with any other random director out there. He’s talented and stylistic but is also very in tune with the human condition and our insecurities as a social species. I think you can find those themes in all of his movies.
Emma Stone gave one of the worst performances I've ever seen in Poor Things and won an Oscar....after that I expect a nobel at least for her in this
The Oscar is without any value by now. I already forgot she won.
Her performance was actually one of the best ever given. I think you may have accidentally watched Aloha or something
@@friendlypup5650 I freely admit art is in the eye of the beholder...I love Emma in amazing spiderman 2 and have that as my favorite Spidey film so I understand... but unless the director was saying act like someone with sever mental disabilities rather than this guileless creature without inhibitions and with no social boundaries ever, she was straight up awful. Again, just my opinion but I actually felt embarrassed for her long before the movie ended...
@@everyoneash tough to argue with opinions, but she did in fact have a mental disability. That disability being that she was a toddler. And throughout the film you get to see her rapidly progress into womanhood
@@friendlypup5650 i did not see the progression...truly...and that was my issue. But maybe it just hit me wrong or I was tired...still trying to figure out how she won anything for it since I believe I'm in the minority here.
Yorgus Lanthimos is just Tommy Wiseau with famous friends
He is better then Tomas because at least he knows how to direct a good film LMAO
@@michaelhawkins7389fax
Why is Wiseau following me around today?! He showed up in my IG feed twice and now you brought him up on here too! So bizarre and random! I hope 3 is the end of his lurking cringe! 😩
@@bunnycat4153 Wiseau has made more then three films , so I don't know what you are referring too? lol and also so has Yorgos Lanthimos
So I don't know what you mean by "I hope 3 is the end of his lurking cringe! "
Hahahaha 80 percent of the time right on
I liked The Lobster a lot.. Most people hated it lol..
Then you should check this out.
Both are weird in a Lanthimos kind of way.
I'm all set with any of this Hollyweirdo's movies. Someone needs to check his browser history
an entertaining review & based on what you said the movie sounds vile. dadaism & nihilism were already explored pretty fully in 20th century art, so i don't know why anyone would want to go there for nearly 3 hours in 2024.
It’s set in Louisiana
Filmed in New Orleans.
Where it's set is somewhat ambiguous.
I also thought that 1st segment takes place in LA
I liked poor things but felt it just went crazy with showing Emma getting smashed like crazy and this from the sounds of it like hey let’s do it again which makes me think “ do I really want to go see this shit ?? “.
I liked Emma Stone before she got fully HW'ized. Before her conventional attractiveness was…er…subverted and wasn’t doing all the quasi-p@rn. She seems on the usual trajectory for the A-listers-especially now-but it’s Not a positive change, IMO
SAME
what the hell are you talking about? There is no studio that does not want to work with her, not to mention that her latest auteur films have had monetary success and attention at awards shows
That’s my opinion. You are welcome to agree or disagree, but it remains my opinion. That’s how that works.
@@owenharrison761 what the hell are YOU talking about? Guy is expressing something called an opinion
@@Nova-fh2et So?
I loved it everyone gots opinions
Saw this movie today. It looks like all 3 shorts were about redemption for the protagonists. I liked this movie. I love strange movies like this.
Anyone surprised?
I'll just pass on this one, the running time and its director (I've seen three of his filmography, and liked none of them) say enough.
For the ones who've seen it, is Hunter Schafer believable playing an woman?
Emma Stone is cringe, that Napoleon Dynamite-style dance didn’t do her no favors
@@Bingo_the_Pug exactly I don’t get this recent hype around her being a top notch actor. I remember her from Superbad and Easy A, nothing roe really. I can’t believe poor things won at the Oscar’s.
Cant wait for this. Loved Poor Things and love how this film seems to be offending people so much with his harsh and rich style of writing. Emma Stone is fearless
Annoying and better not seen naked…
@@martintimmer8574 ok stick to pg-13 if you can’t handle the human body
@@martintimmer8574ok marvel kid
@@friendlypup5650
It’s ok to not want to see naked people in movies. Weird thing to shame someone for.
Chris, you upspeak like a Valley Girl
Her dad bought her career. Anyone ever noticed how she came out of nowhere and starred in Superbad
I looked at her as a replacement for Lindsay Lohan when her star started to fade.
White redhead won the Oscar instead of the native American woman that entertainment media was was pushing. Don't think i will ever get tired of saying that 😅
This would help 🤣🤣🤣
You two, Critical Drinker and Jeremy Jahns are the only reviewers I genuinely get excited to see a new video pop up in my feed! o7
Jeremy Jahns isn’t in the same stratosphere as those other two
Am I the only one in this sphere who finds Critical Drinker unlistenable and even unreasonable at times? According to him, everything about how sexes, races, and lifestyles are presented has to be tit-for-tat over spans of multiple unrelated movies, and that supposedly has to say something about the quality of the film, and he can't judge a film on its own merits if the boxes he thinks should be checked aren't checked. He's the horseshoe phenomenon of someone trying to be so anti-SJW that he loops back around to becoming one.
Jeremy Jahns is too...mainstream....too much like so many fakers we tend to not like around here....
It smells heavily of pretentious basement dweller in some of these comments haha.
@@larbear325Don't worry; we're probably more modest and relatable in our IRL lives than we are nerding out on narrow subjects that fascinate us on the internet!
You lost me about 90 seconds into the description of the plot. Even trying to make sense of it is a lost cause.
To be fair this description leaves out a lot of the context that makes things make sense. With that being said even with context the plots of the 3 shorts ares till weird as hell lol
Weirder than Aria ... ?
I'm just happy Emma Stone is just doing her own thing. Good for her
Me and my girlfriend both had interest in poor things and then this film, having never seen any of his films and having a friend recommend another film of his. We saw poor things and were interested for the first half but were completely let down at the end of it. It felt like it had constant themes that went nowhere and honestly thought it was a little pedophilic with its themes and the literal scene with kids watching adults have sex.
We decided to give this one a shot and tried to pull through but we walked out and got vouchers to see another movie. Its another example of themes that went nowhere and just lack luster stories. While me and my gf love strange plots and themes, the sex and animals felt very forced and uncomfortable. I get a "theme" of the different kindness the stories had but it was so odd that the stories didn't really portray it. We both loved the casting and acting but it's pointless when it feels like the director is being as pretentious as possible.
I'm not saying in any regard that anyone who liked this film is "dumb" or "wrong" for liking it, you enjoy whatever you want. It just definitely wasn't a good movie to us and we agreed to never watch any other films of his. If you were on the fence during "poor things" or any of his other movies then definitely pass on this one.
Sounds like an Adult Swim or Newgrounds series made into a movie with big name actors.
too bad it's not Marshmallow Madness eh?? gods what a classic! at least that would be hilarious in live action, all John Wick action, no dialog, no narrative just the action tells the story lol it worked for Dunkirk!
Lanthimos is apparently turning Emma Stone in his personal artsy p0rnstar. Fine by me!
Yorgos is insanely overrated. Lobster sucked. Killing of Sacred Dear sucked. Just arsty Hollywood self-fellating pretentious BS.
Alternately, THE FAVOURITE is a masterpiece and DOGTOOTH was a great debut.
@@spacebase00 all his movies are great. It’s a very rich and interesting style of filmmaking but I feel he just keeps getting better overtime
@@friendlypup5650 I agree with you, but it's hard to argue the divisive nature of The Lobster and Sacred Deer.
@@spacebase00 oh for sure. Very divisive, but not just for the sake of it. He’s very playful and has a great sense of humour while also having very well put together scripts
@@friendlypup5650 PERFECTLY said! EXACTLY why he's one of my favorite working filmmakers 😊.
Thanks for the heads-up review. It'll be a pass for me, too. I kinda figured from the trailer it would be a shock-value-for-shock-value's-sake film, which, in my opinion, is just a cop-out. I never saw Poor Things because it seemed like sex for sex's sake, and other weird things I had no interest in paying to watch on a big screen. Pass.
I saw killing of a sacred deer, didn’t like it, gave Yorgos another chance with Poor Things, still wasn’t blown away, won’t be watching this one
I've been thinking about that movie non stop trying to piece together all the metaphors, the connections between each vignette, the motivations, the themes and how they expand. If that's not payoff I don't know what is. I'm sorry but that's a very bad review, zero reasoning, zero breakdown just "weird for weirds sake" (which is definitely not true), "too long" and not hot enough nudity (which is the point)
Isn't this from the same director of The Lobster, with Colin Farrell? I watched it after it received rave reviews and thought I'd accidentally watched the wrong film. It was absurd.
I too enjoy weird films, like those from David Lynch or Robert Eggers, but those two reveal their genius as filmmakers time & time again. I didn't get that feeling from The Lobster. Because it was positioned as a black comedy and I didn't laugh once, I felt ripped off.
Then 100% skip on this.
It's further down that rabbit hole.
@grim_2000 Sincere thanks for confirming that. I'm just not into dude's movies and that's fine.
Lynch and eggers isn’t even wierd compare to yorgos. They are in different field
I get ya. Someone you get to a point where you’re in too deep.
I love weird movies.
But there has to be an intelligence behind the weirdness.
And there's nobody intelligent in movies anymore.
Sounds like a film students art project
nothing like it
Who to you think they’re trying to emulate 😂
I liked The Favourite but I didn't really like Poor Things and this just looks even more pretentious.
An anthology... I truly dislike anthologies
Im going to go see it because I want to encourage movies to be weird and different instead of this mediocre superhero content i want to see movies the filmmakers are passionate about making not just because it will make them feel like there earning money for strippers an coke
I just saw it. Was great. This review seems a little confused
You’re still giving it way too much credit… Lol
Usually I like weird symbolic movies but I don’t think I’ll see this one.
Jeezus dude..mayb write out a bit of what u want to say..."Um, Um, Uh, Uh, And, And, But, But Studder Studder Studder"
Chris cannot review a film without spoiling it.
Emma Stone used to be my favorite actress. Yourgross completely nuked her career
She is dating him , and also said she would do anything with in recent interview!
@@theoutabodies5653 they're not dating
That's also how I feel a bit. Though Emma is still my favorite actress, but I really hope she will return to making good movies again.
@@hopsfdshe is in the best phase of her career rn
@@YorgosL1 She is obviously doing great and is in my opinion the best actress working today. I just personally rather see her in different kinds of movies.
This is the kind of film that draws the line, uses it as a jumprope, then falls on its face, laughing when it busts its front teeth out.
Dude, if it makes Chris Gore uncomfortable, not gonna watch it.
Kind of kindness sounds weird than previous movies Yorgos directed such as The Favorite and Poor Things. Poor Things have plenty of graphic sex scenes. I don't think i won't watch it.
I thought The Lobster, Killing of a Sacred Deer were straight up GARBAGE. Poor Things....I liked it but did not think it was worthy of an Oscar for any of the story or acting......at best I thought set design was Oscar worthy. Cannot believe as talented as Emma Stone is......I LOATHE that she won it for that! I'll check this out in passing when the opportunity presents itself.....cable or whatever.....but will not pay theater prices to see it. NO WAY!!
Based on your perception of his films, I recommend to skip on this altogether. It's NOT like Poor Things. More like Lobster, but weirder.
Go watch the anime Memories you heathens, better than this film or Four Rooms. Magnet Rose is peak space horror.
Dogtooth was ok, loved the first half of The Lobster but the second half was mediocre, enjoyed Killing of a Sacred Deer, The Favourite was overrated boredom, and just havent had any interest in these last 2 films.
Yorgos is interesting but seems to be losing the plot a bit.
Please,no more Emma Stone. Especially not naked…uuurgh.
Odd movie. Not a Lanthimos fan besides Poor Things and that is mainly for Emma Stone.
I have said it before and I will say it again, Emma Stone has a face that's made for radio.
The trailer irritated me so this is one i will avoid. This director does not make things i enjoy.
gross, hard pass
Sounds ugly & unnecessary. The trailer was intriguing, what a shame. And almost 3 hours? Why can’t anyone make a tight 90min movie anymore, everything is like 120-180min.
I'll pass!
I have to completely disagree, Poor Things was utter shite, and from hearing this it sounds like it's again just done for the 'shock value' - save edge to shock normies.
Loved Poor Things, struggled with The Lobster. Rolling the dice 🎲
Three hours of repulsive weirdness? Nope, I'm out. It's like this director is seeing how turned off he can make the audience. And I thought Poor Things was too weird.
Disgusting
lol
? What is
emma stone is far from aging gracefully thus has no career choices and has to resort to playing denigrating roles that no actress with self respect would play in one million years
2 hours and 44 minutes are kidding me?! How cannot say this movie is self indulgent, pretentious bullshit
God, I am NOT watching this movie.
wtf. This doesn’t sound interesting at all
Emma stone is not hot!
Boy oh boy you guys are WRONG in the worst way‼️
(And you know what's the most irritating thing about MOST critics is the smug certainty that they are RIGHT..they in fact MAY be right but the sanctimonious abrasiveness of that specific TONE repels me
A24 is my favourite studio, but this was fucking awful. Do not see this movie. This and poor things is one of the worst fucking movies I've ever seen, i genuinely believe the director shouldnt get work.
Y'all are normies.
you say that you like weird movies and you mentioned william da foe and the way you described the movie, it reminded me immediately to the movie eXistenZ.
I would love to hear your take on the move eXistenZ.
