Lumbee is not of course the historical Nationality "Name" of the vast mixed multicultural heritage's that joined forces and intermarried to survive the foreign European invasion and occupation of our ancestral home land's. It's our bloodlines and birthright thatakes us who we are.
I'm happy to see local Lumbee's gathering together to have a good time, but it somewhat bothers me that people are representing our tribe at the pow-wows and/or talking publicly about our tribe when they lack a formal education and many times mis-represent the tribe. Example I have seen multiple videos with locals dressed in regalia, face paint, etc which no one can say is reflective of how our ancestors dressed and lived. And locals make the problem worse because many of them think its historically accurate.
Never got conquered? That's due to the fact the Feds never saw the Lumbee as a bona fide American Indian tribe, and still don't to this day. This event is actually a demonstration of cultural appropriation.
Lumbee Act of 1956 identified them as a native american tribe that has held together as political entity since colonial times. The only thing the act did not give them was the benefits that came with the status as Native Americans. Lumbee tribe are fighting not really for federal recognition, but for the benefits owed to them. This law was passed during the "Termination" time period when the government was trying to sever its duty and ties to native american tribes.
From their status as a recognized Native American tribe. The 2017-2018 "recognition" bill is a bill to strike the language from the 1956 act that prohibited the Lumbees from benefiting from federal services due to their status as Native Americans. It has put them in this weird limbo where they are a tribe that is recognized by the federal government but they do not have the same privileges and status afforded to other tribes with such recognition. The Lumbees have have been fighting for full recognition for over 120 years. They are not some "heritage club" like the ones from the 70s that got together to scam the government. They have a very long and celebrated history with the state of North Carolina and the United States. They are involved in the National Congress of American Indians, the National Indian Education Association, The Bureau of Indian Affairs, the American Indian Movement (key individuals like Dr. Dean Chavers (Lumbee) was instrumental to the historic takeover of Alcatraz), and have many friends across Indian Country. April Whitemore Locklear, a Lumbee, became Miss Indian World in 1998-1999 at the Gathering of Nations by sharing the herbal and medicinal practices of the Lumbee, something that they as a people have never forgotten. The Lumbee are an amalgamation of many southeastern US tribes. They share a lot of culture with their surrounding brothers and sisters. To call their event a "demonstration of cultural appropriation" is pretty much a slap in the face. The Lumbee are an integral part of Indian Country and has faithfully answered the call every time. Full federal recognition for the Lumbee is not a matter of if, but when.
Federal benefits accrue from the treaty relationship between recognized sovereign nations. The Lumbee have no such treaty relationship due to the fact, historically they were not a recognized Nation. Simply being recognized by a colonizing power doesn't entail automatic benefits. So you think being colonized somehow entitles one to benefits? The Lumbee are requesting to be colonized in order to be subject to federal services? Sure the Lumbee ( forgetting the name derives from a river and not from a First Nation language mean ;;the People) have been involved in various sorts of events involving contemporary issues, but the historical evidence doesn't add up. The dance in the video is straight up Hudenoshonie/ Iroquois, and no language derives from a so-called ''Lumbee'' dialect or in situ origin. It's similar to Creole. A mishmash of African American, European and First Nation ancestry.

Treaty of Peace and Friendship of 1786 in force and recognized through article 6 section 2 of the constitution. Think about that!

Completely agree with you

Benefits accruing from where exactly?

THIS is LITERALLY DISRESPECTFUL
